Hmm, if you could change it before then i don't see why this would have been removed. We did notice on Rigo's OS4.1 install almost none of the GUI prefs options did anything.
USB keyboard in U-boot - there's a setenv for this, but the easy way is to select USB Keyboard in U-Boot prefs under OS4.

Good Lord! Then I've spent 20+ hours trying to do the impossible. Although I did get it to boot even with all of the errors. After that nothing seemed to work correctly.
Thanks pal, I guess I'll have to return to the VIA and upgrade the OS. I have two pata hard drives, one main, one backup. Or I could clean one drive off and make a fresh install.
I also have a sii680 controller card here which I was using for about a year until it quit working. That is when I returned to the VIA. I think I will try it again first._________________ Moxee AmigaOne X1000 AmigaOne XE G4 I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. |

No, that's only half true.
If you have a SiI 3112 then you can boot from it.
However, if it is a SiI 3114 then you can't.
It's been like this for ages and I doubt it has changed with 4.1 as it is a U-Boot restriction.

The install sheet which came with my controller is for Sil 3112, but the controller is a Sil 3512. _________________ Moxee AmigaOne X1000 AmigaOne XE G4 I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. |

Surprise, surprise, my sii680 card is working again. I cannot find any labeling on the connectors so it took me a while to figure out that the blue connector is the primary and the white one the secondary. Of course my sii680 install sheet has been misplaced in my move some months ago.
When booting it shows Bus 0 placing a long series of dots from left to right across the screen. It must be checking the VIA bus and finds nothing. This takes about 55 seconds.
Then it says Bus 0 is OK and boots into 4.0 from the sii680.
Will the following turn off that long VIA bus checking:
setenv ide_maxbus 0 saveenv

I thought I was purchasing a 3112. I was surprised when I opened the box and saw the controller was a 3512 with 1.5 Gb/s transfer rate. _________________ Moxee AmigaOne X1000 AmigaOne XE G4 I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. |

Yes, sorry, I should have been more clear. But Moxee's SATA being a 3512, he can't boot from SATA -- yet (I just read Rogue's post later in the thread ).

PM me a shipping address and I'll buy you a 3512. I am serious. It will benefit us all and you get to keep it.
Well, I've got 4.0 booting nice and fast now on my old sii0680 card. Even faster than it use to. It took me a bit of reading, but it appears that everything is looking good.
Now I'll make sure everything is backed up on my 2nd drive, reset up the 1st drive, and install 4.1. It took a long time to get here, but we live and learn. At least I found out that the sii0680 card I almost threw away is still working. Wish I knew what made it quit._________________ Moxee AmigaOne X1000 AmigaOne XE G4 I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. |

I've got 4.1 installed now and running.
Strange, but my backup hard drive is not being recognized. I was going to use that to fetch all my settings from plus transfer some software.

No. We get paid a lot more because we have a Union My copy of OS4.1 arrived in the same squashed condition. The problem is the packaging. Fragile items need to be packed in a sturdy cardboard box with good cushioning. Despite what you may think, one of us doesn't run across the country carefully holding your package at arms length to deliver it to you. Millions of packages have to be stacked into containers and containers stacked into trucks and planes. There is not enough time to squeeze each package to determine if it should be stacked on the top or the bottom. It's up to the shipper to use adequate packaging._________________ X1000 with 2GB memory & OS4.1FE |

| Anyone
I did an upgrade rather than a new install.
I like it. It was a surprise to find that instead of the familiar blanker graphics somehow OS4.1 has peered into a deeply buried image directory in another partition and is cycling through the images of some adventures in a sailing canoe, in a disorderly way. I wouldn't dream of having any porn on my computer but some may find this a wee bit embarrasing - serve them right!
... but I have a couple of quibbles, one rather serious.
The serious one is that my USB card reader, used through a powered hub, will not accept an SD flash card anymore. I get told that babble has been detected etc. (USB UCHI Error) I've swapped most USB files, one by one, with the former installation but have not found an answer yet. My A1 is used at a meeting every month. People bring their USB sticks or flash cards so this is going to be awkward if I don't get some help, apart from deterring other A1 owners from getting their upgrades.
The less serious but annoying one has to do with arexx. It happened before I believe, but then I simply restored the 68k lib or whatever over what was doing the damage. essentially any line like:
is putting quotes round one word variables. Perhaps this is intended but I have to strip the quotes off again in any amount of scripts before they will work. If quotes are to go round multi-word inputs the user issuing the instruction should intoduce the quotes.
For example an output from a script I use to lookup past issues of a magazine I do (see below), should look like this:
file://localhost/Work:Amsmags/Amsmag2007/FEB_2007/Amsmag.html
If I don't strip the variables of quotes, along with the browser telling me the document is not found, I get:
file://localhost/Work:Amsmags/Amsmag2007"/"FEB_2007"/Amsmag.html
Below is the full script. With suitable ammendments some might find it useful. You can even chop off the "send url" section if you can ammend the two previous url lines to pass the url to OpenURL or equivalent.
/* Select Amsmag */ IF ~show('l',"rexxtricks.library") then call addlib('rexxtricks.library',-0,-30,2) last=getenv('maglast') parse var last mthl yrl . mthl=strip(mthl,'B','"');yrl=strip(yrl,'B','"') /* parse var putting quotes round one word variable names damm it */
ADDRESS COMMAND 'rxset str `requeststring "What Amsmag? 1" "Enter month and year in form mmm yyyy.*n e.g. may 2006 for May 2006"`' mag=translate(getclip('str')) IF mag="" THEN url = 'file://localhost/Work:Amsmags/Amsmag'yrl'/'mthl'_'yrl'/Amsmag.html' ELSE DO parse var mag mth yr . yr=strip(yr,'B','"'); mth=strip(mth,'B','"') /*Oops! those quotes again! */ url = 'file://localhost/Work:Amsmags/Amsmag'yr'/'mth'_'yr'/Amsmag.html' END
/* send url to web browser */
IF SHOW('P','OWB') THEN DO /* works with Blastoise OWB but not DODUO until it gets arexx port */ lh= pos('localhost/',url) IF lh>0 THEN DO /* change local url to unix style */ u=substr(url,lh+10) col=pos(':',u) IF col>0 THEN url='file:///'||substr(u,1,col-1)||'/'||substr(u,col+1) /* substitute slash for colon */ ELSE url='file:///'u) END ELSE NOP ADDRESS 'OWB' 'OPENURL' url /*SCREENTOFRONT*/ /* hey Jeorg! needed arexx command */ END
ELSE IF SHOW('P','IBROWSE') THEN DO ADDRESS 'IBROWSE' 'GOTOURL' url SCREENTOFRONT END ELSE IF SHOW('P','AWEB.1') THEN DO ADDRESS 'AWEB.1' 'Open' url SCREENTOFRONT END ELSE DO call open('in','env:vbro','r') bro=strip(readln('in')) call close('in') IF exists(bro) THEN ADDRESS COMMAND 'run >nil:' bro url ELSE say "Preferences Web browser not found. Please correct prefs/env-archive/vbro." END

Wow. My installation was easy compared to what you went through. I got tripped up on the "Start Media ToolBox" part of the installation. After saving the hard disk changes I did the usual reboot so the changes would take effect without thinking about the fact that it would end the installation I restarted the installation but some how ended up with a Locale in Europe and a British keyboard. That was easy enough to correct. I also forgot to name the SWAP drive "SWAP" (left it as DH6:) and renamed it the next day. I don't know if swapping will still work if I didn't get the name right during the install.
After checking out the big drag bars and having problems hitting the tiny hit box for the "Window Close" gadget, I copied my OS4 theme over to OS 4.1 and am using that. It seems to be more adjustable than the OS 4.1 themes. Others will probably like the new windows but I prefer the OS4 style ones; it's a matter of taste I suppose.
When you get a chance try this:
Open the Prefs/WBPattern program. Open the "Picture name" requester. Backspace in the "File" string gadget until the current filename in the requester is gone and hit return. Open the "Picture name" requester and the directories for OS4: appear. Double-click on one of the directories. The requester is empty; no files or directories are shown.
Strange bug. The new requester looks nice though.
You might want to try the new default MUI prefs instead of copying your old ones from OS4 to OS 4.1. I think they are much more tuned into the OS 4.1 appearance than it the past._________________ X1000 with 2GB memory & OS4.1FE |

Yea, me too... But I think someone used it as a knee pad or something..
The OS4 box was already empty and flattened though, and the manual and CD was loose in the package in a plastic bag, so I have to "assemble" my OS4.1 box myself when I get home. That way I will have a perfect OS4.1 box anyway no matter how many sat on the package _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

Naw, the whole U-Boot thing is still something I do as a side project, not for Hyperion, so I cannot do anything that will get me into some commitment. I suppose that this should be able to work without the actual hardware.
Thanks anyway._________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

Sort of the same here! When I finally got the correct hardware and finished installing 4.1 I found my time zone was set to UK. I think it was -1. I discovered this by reading email in Yam and finding my latest email was dated tomorrow in the future. Yes, simple to correct.
