Can I add a negative amount?

I rarely bother to read these threads, after all, what's the point? What makes you think a custom x86 board would be any cheaper than a custom PPC board, as, after all, Hyperion simply can't support a zillion different hardware setups, so it would still have to be a single (or small amount of) selected boards, which, by the time the OS has gotten the required drivers etc, will be outdated and people will keep crying about how expensive and underpower it is...

Personally I hate doing lowlevel coding for x86. Can't stand wasting time in 2009 with an 8-register CPU...

I agree, I'd want shares as well in return for such an investment.

Lets be frank though, we won't reach the $500,000 needed in this hypothetical.

Why are you thinking of a custom x86 board design? No, that wouldn't make sense, and I don't get why anyone would even think of it.

My apologies. After reading the other most recent threads on topic, I see that you did.
Regardless, no harm in mentioning the elephant in the room again (legalities).

Another major issue often glossed over is "timeliness". Something starts as a decent idea, but by the time it reaches completion stage, the world has moved on.

Any proposal should take a realistic timeframe for execution into account.

@HenryCase

I read your initial post again and noticed you where talking investments. If we are talking investment in shares. Like owning a piece of Hyperion I would be willing to look at at what ever they propose and invest $10.000 if it looked good

If we are just talking a bounty I would pay $100 now and for the OS when it was released.

What I don't understand is why you think the users should pay all of the porting costs. The way I see it a bounty supporting a commercial company is a bit off limit.

My personal guess is that Hyperion would instantly sell 2000+ copies of OS4 if it was ported and decently supported (personally I would need 5). So if the porting cost is $500.000 IMHO the bounty wouldn't need be $500.000 for Hyperion to break even.

If these are serious thoughts (donations to make real progress), I'll consider making certain information public as to some projects if the proper clearance can be obtained to discuss same.

Sorry for the somewhat off-topic, but I tend to respond to such posts when I 1st notice them. Our various bounty methods are quite scattered and disjointed, imo. I want to consider at minimum a way to unify them at the very least with a solitary page linking to ALL of them.
There has never been a shortage of willingness to help. There has been the absence of a proper vehicle that users can tap to easily translate that willingness into a firm understanding of what a project is all about and how to become a part OF it.

(this is NOT a slap at any individual involved in trying to create their own initiatives or bounties)

I find it a smart idea to increase Hyperion capital by allotting more shares to public to have X86 port and other projects. I would pay $10,000 easily (but it is private)

Hyperion: Can you go public? Sorry!

Anyway, so far we've reached $13186.27 USD (at current exchange rates), my my my aren't we right on target. Keep on pledging money if you want to see OS4 x86 happen, and to the haters get your own thread, this is pledges only. Thank you.

Private firms can sell shares too, just not on an stock exchange and where they set the price rather than any market. If you really want to invest in the private firm you can email them and ask.

Did Hyperion ever state they could/would do an x86 version if the were financed?
Do they have the time for such a project now?
What will porting cost?
What hardware should be supported in an initial port?

If you have contacted Hyperion and got a yes for the two first questions and an answer I can use on the latter two I will purchase 5 copies and pay upfront.

So please tell me what Hyperion said to your proposal.

I believe he is trying to make a point (that you are missing).

The point being lets take a low-ball number like $500,000 and see if we can even muster that MINIMUM as a *ballpark*. Henry I am sure if quite aware he will not see that amount of pledges, not seriously anyway.

The point being the community could never do this, no matter how much it wishes it. And since Hyperion is unlikely to have such a wealthy benefactor on its own its time to realize we have probably forever missed the boat on x86 and should in the meantime enjoy PPC as much as we can, and if we want x86 so bad we should get more behind AROS.

My comment was directed at others in general, not at you. I'm agreeing with your point. We can't generate the money needed. End of story.

Would I spend money on shares in Hyperion anyway? Yeah sure, a bit, for the right price anyway. Not expecting that would get us an x86 port, more as a sign of further support rather.

He is assessing pledges, not taking donations. He is trying to make the community go through the motions of realizing real-world that we don't have the means to make an AOS 4.0 port monetarily.

@HenryCase

You're asking the wrong question. You want AmigaOS on a well-defined x86 target, yes? It's already been established that Hyperion can't/won't do it, but AROS/Anubis has already gotten started. So I suggest that you turn the bounty into this:

1. Pick a specific x86 CPU family and chipset (motherboard models become obsolete too fast, while chipsets remain in use for a few years)
2. Pick a specific set of video and audio chipsets (for the same reason)
3. Make it so that AROS works flawlessly on the above

That's a lot more achievable than some vague "AmigaOS on x86", and a lot more likely to happen than Hyperion shafting their (PPC) hardware partners.

@CodeSmith
The proposed bounty is is for getting x86 OS4 in any form, not in a specific form (though would say targetting a budget and high end system like the classic A500/A2000 split would be best IMO). Anyway I suggest you read rest of comments in this thread as fairlanefastback got the aim of the thread spot on.

@all
Running total... $13686.27 USD.

@HenryCase

I find it really weird that people who don't want to pay multi hundred dollar amounts for PPC are willing to pledge it for x86 ....

Pledges are also maeningless I could pledge $1000 but I aint got $0.50.

Not entirely sure why I bothered postying in this one having avoided all the rest but hopefully normal service will resumed as son as posible ...
