@retro

I'm afraid it's after 12:00 here, did you take global time into account?

Oh BTW, don't be too quick to fool, lack of capitals really gives it away. And lack of an actual news item.

Apart from that. Hehehe. Good on you for trying. But don't try and bankrupt Hyperion again!

Yeah, far too obvious. No worries, you've got a whole year now to think up something better

People often say that, it's not that day in my country...

That gets me thinking though, is it ever the same day at any point in time, everywhere in the world at once?

@clint

Hmm... I think you would be in some sort of time distortion field and you might explode.

Only at any given point of a specified longitude.

Good point anyway. There should be a dedicated philosophy forum.

Well, yes and no.

If time zones were done sensibly, then there would be only 24 hours worth of different time zones, with the date line being roughly opposite Greenwich. Then at midnight on the date line, all the world's time zones would agree on what day it is.

In reality, time zones are less sensibly assigned, and there are actually 27 hours worth of time zones (it goes up to UTC+14, and down to UTC-12). Thus, with there being a pair of places in the world with a difference of 26 hours between them, they can obviously never be in the same day at the same time.

Funnily enough, at least part of this nonsense was created in the leadup to the year-2000 celebrations, when some small Pacific island nations which used to be east of the date line (and thus around the UTC-11 or UTC-10 mark) decided that they should "logically relocate" to the west of the dateline, and thus become UTC+13 or UTC+14 --- all in an effort to be amongst the first nations to "welcome the new millennium", rather than among the last (and never mind that they were a year early, anyway :)

Well, not as obvious as "Microsoft bankrupt."

I remember when Amiga Format did an April fool, about an new Amiga, TCAP, which had been created by reverse-engineering a chip salvaged from the crashed UFO in Roswell. It would have run at speeds of 12 terahertz, and was being kept ultra-sercret by the NSA, no pictures, but a leaked document which AF had got their hands on. It was tricky for Amiga Inc. to keep their hands on it, as Cyrix, HP and such were also trying to reverse-engineer the chip to get there first.

Before seeing this article, I read the editorial which admitted there was a spoof article in the issue which also had an article about cuckoo clocks and CD drives... or something. I thought, "Please, let this be the April fool and not the TCAP one!" Although it was very far fetched, AF had really gone out of their way to make in convincing!

AF even set up a helpline, "We know you'll be desperate to know more, so call this number for the latest info." I wonder if anyone actually did call that line, and what response they'd have got? Probably a recorded message, "Ha ha! April fool!"

Well, some other people also did almost fall for it; in AF's next issue a reader's letter asked if it was serious, and Ben vost replied, "Umm, this was an April fool."

Well, in fact I reckon it was all true, and in fact SpaceDruid and his pals sent in the MIBs to silence Amiga Format. I reckon the next version of SAM will actually be based around this UFO chip!

RoqueFort has gone away for a while. DO NOT attempt to contact him or you'll be going away for a while as well.

There is nothing to see here, move along.

Ohhh deep one there... I suppose it might not be. But perhaps it could be so if everyone went to the centre of the earth.

Yeah, I hear it's the same season all the time there too. I love summer, but that might be a bit much.
