| I think AROS is positive for the Amiga as a whole. Those who encounter AROS and think it is good and is about to revive their Amiga interest might want to try "the real thing" which is AmigaOS 3.x or preferably AmigaOS 4.x.
Good that I saw this thread. I downloaded AROS recently but forgot it. I will have to test it right away. |

I agree. For some AROS will be an end in itself for others it might simply be the "gateway drug"! Either way, it's good.
Did you download one of the distros - Icaros or Broadway? I hope so, as they'll give you the best experience. The builds on the AROS web-site are mostly for developers.

| I have put lots of money into AROS.
People that have money and want something bad pay for it. People that have no money, can also have it.
If a bounty is running the community deside if it is going to happen. After it is done there is no more to be payed. It will be free forever. The source code can be changed in the future.
This stuff make AROS kind of imortal. Even if all AROS development stoped at some point.
I like to give. I like others to enjoy something I payed for.
On the other hand I don't think all software should be free. There must be some balance beween this.

"Aros on an i7 will always run faster than AOS4 on PPC."
Only true as long as AOS4 is single core OS. It is being made ASMP, while there is no such development on AROS. AROS is still in the 3.1 API catchup game.
And also Power7 is a PPC. (and so will be A2 and Power8 and ...) Last edited by KimmoK on 05-Aug-2010 at 12:41 PM.

| Are oranges a menace to bananas? However, Aros still feels unfinished in my opinion but I am sure give it another year and then we'll talk, it's like wine (yes, the beverage, not the open source software).

| The only way we can combine the markets is to compile to an intermediate language.
Then software can be distributed to any platform and part of the installation procedure would include a native compiler that will take the intermediate language and make it native to the OS/platform.
This has to be transparently included within *the installer* system to make it seemless to the user.
Then you can run Amiga apps on any Amiga-ish platform.
Yes this sounds like Amiga-Anywhere, but the difference is we are targeting an AmigaOS reference platform specifically. Also *key* is that the installer is also a compiler so speed is not sacrificed once the product is installed. |

I think it would be neat if AmigaOS would be made available on a POWER6 or the upcoming POWER7 processors. It would wipe the floor of the other options, but I would speculate that the price would be fairly hefty also.
Indeed it's playing catchup. After I posted my comment I thought about adding UAE, too. OS 3.1 was/is quite popular, especially with UAE (Amiga Forever specifically), so it is a good goal for Aros. |

It would be fun if some very rich geek paid for hyperion to support Power6 or Power7. Those systems cost a lot, so also AOS4 licence for that could be set very high.
But that's after they manage to get ASMP working fully on x1000. (using power core (with PPC bridge) rather than old PPC core)
AROS is @ good R&D speed, if not perfect. IMHO, it has some potential to bring the community together one day... Last edited by KimmoK on 06-Aug-2010 at 11:15 AM.

Only if you believe AmigaOS is going to sit still and do nothing.

| Strange polls lilke this make people think "what is aros" ... why is it a menace..
then they go looking. Then realise its free and they can pick up hardware for like $20 (old x86) and have a play and realise that its actually pretty cool.

Amiga Forever will be around for a while, too. There are plenty of chip options for AmigaOS4. |

How cool is it to have an experimental OS for $20? Last edited by longbow75 on 07-Aug-2010 at 02:40 AM.

And what's that supposed to mean ? Baiting maybe ?
