Be nice, i'm new to OS4.x

My SAM system arrived today and i've installed OS4.1.

It's all going well (for now) except for one hell of an annoying problem. 50% of the time, when I click on a window it clicks behind it. For example if i'm in a preferences window and I click "Use" or "Test", it'll make the window inactive, transparent & click behind the window, instead of actually clicking on Use or Test.

It also happens when I try to double-click an icon to open a program.

How do I solve this?

Edit: .. and out of curiousity where is the option to turn on/off compositing?
Edit2: I must stress how annoying it is, i'm finding it hard to close windows, open programs, or do anything really. I've accidentally moved a folder somewhere. I have no idea where it went, it's gone!

Edit3: Managed to find compositing checkbox in "GUI", and it fixes it.. except that I like the transparency effects and want it on. Any ideas?

What, i'm supposed to allow people to flame me when I have a legitimate problem? I've read the TOS and the FAQ.

@MickJT

I had the same problem plus distorted background of all windows. Try to add some transparency to active window (1%). After saving everything is OK.

But i have a problem with a sound. A crackling noise comes from speakers and it is almost impossible to recognaize whats playing. Its like you play a tape with slow down. I will try some AHI settings and add Mixer to WBStartup.

Very strange, never heard of your problem. Compositing should not cause problems like that.

What screen mode are you using? e.g. 1024x768, 16-bit
What graphics card are you using? e.g. Radeon 9250, 128MB
What mouse are you using, and which USB port is it plugged in?

Do you get the same problem when booting from the OS4 CD?
Did you install any 3rd-party programs, change any settings, etc before the problem appeared? Or was it present on your first boot?

P.S. There is a known bug when you have transparency on the INactive window, although I had not heard it caused anything like this. Try disabling transparency (0%) on the INactive window, to see if it helps.

Adding 1% didn't help at all. With compositing off, I have graphical glitches in window backgrounds, all these black vertical lines.

I find that sometimes drgaging & dropping a file from one window to another, that when you let go of the mouse button, you don't know whether the file is going to end up in the window you dragged it to, or the desktop or window behind the window you dragged it to!

@MickJT

Do you use a CRT ???

Some CRT have vertical line problems (maybe all CRT), even with the DVI2VGA provided by Acube.

Problems on the screen should be resumed by more than one window slightly moved horizontally. same for caracters. Maybe It's your problem ???

IN my side, I use now the internal SVGA connector, for my old CRT, and the result is OK.

Try to play with some transparency settings. Im not sure about it (1%) but after some time, settings, savings, the problem disappeared. It is very annoying you can even catch and move icons behind windows!

Had exactly the same problems.

For now I have turned off compositing mode for layers totally in GUI prefs.(Unchecked box). This solves the drag issue.
Will experiment with the transparancy another time.

PS: I am usinga a Sam440ep-flex so I wonder if there is an issue with PCI graphics cards that is now showing up if no one has heard of the problem before

Re the Black Lines. I had it in windows too, I adjusted wbpattern prefs and the problem has gone.

Picture name=allerw.pgn

@Spectre660

Black lines are only showing up in the backgrounds of windows. VGA, but it's an LCD monitor and i'm using a Radeon 9250 PCI 128MB gfx card (there is no onboard gfx).

Black lines are showing up in both composited 3D mode and non-3D. I did manage to temporarily fix the clicking behind windows problem, but it came back after a reboot.

The top front USB port only supplies power to the device that's plugged in to it, for about half a second, making it useless. The bottom front USB on the case doesn't work at all. Hmm. This is the blockbuster case from i.m.m informatique.

I can report that the AmigaKit's NETPCI001 card works though! At least when it's set up properly which was a little tricky.

@MickJT

I should have made my previous post clearer. Have a look at it again.
Using those settings in WBpattern.prefs fixed the problem of the lines.

@All

If you have both DIMMs installed try try removing one of them and running the system on just the remaining one. Someone else said that solves their graphic glitches on the Flex. I hope there isn't a hardware issue with the Flex and 2 DIMMs installed.

OK Spectre. Still have the issue with clicking behind a window when compositing is on.

I'm gonna call it a night and look at it tomorrow.

@Barret

After spending good money for the extra memory ?

no way man...

Althought this could explain the issues not having been seen before now.

My current settings have for now given me stable, flicker free, no lines in windows,no icons lost between draws or workbench, 1 Gig system.

Re clicking behind window with compositing on.
You may have noticed this if you used the OS4.1 setup CD.
I was clicking in the wrong windows all the time during setup.

Does the onboard network adapter work?

Well, that did it. That fixed it. Hmm!

Now, dvplayer, is it meant to stutter? The framerate is pretty low. Commercial disc here, avcodec, a52, dca and dvdcss plugins installed. 1024x768

DMA enabled on all drives.
