Why no 'final' version for poor old SAM users?

If all goes according to plan, 4.1 update 1 *will* be the final version of 4.1 for the Sam440 boards.

Also, why would the next update not be called 4.2...seems strange to call it 4.1.1

Simply because it is an update to 4.1, as opposed to a complete new set of files.

4.2 will bring with it far more than 4.1 update 1 will, and will be a very worthy upgrade when it is ready.

The 4.1 update will unite the AmigaOne, Pegasos2 and Sam440 in that they will all have a common baseline, and all 3 platforms will be in sync for the first time.

Some embedded chips can run several OSs in parallel. Perhaps that kind of system will enable memory protection in AOS4.2 with new HW.

other than that...

To me it seems that AOS4.2 is THE most ambitious project of Hyperion so far.

Thanks for this update; I am looking forward to seeing how the OS develops; I am getting more and more tempted by the day to take the plunge. It will be fantastic to see these improvements. I have a feeling 2010 is going to be a good year for the Amiga... will it finally emerge from the shadows of Commodore's destitution... I pity them but will never forgive them!

It probably won't be called 4.1.1. The reason it won't be 4.2 is that "4.2" will be a paid-for upgrade.

You are right about steps for the memory protection. And i hope Hyperion have their ideas about how it will be add, to avoid problems with old and more or less new software (step by step "structure envs" changing it's a solution too). Without memory protection aos4 will be still only hobby os. With memory protection it's very possible to make it more or less serious OS for modern usage.

You should go in Natami formus and tell that to Gunnar von Boehn, maybe the insights from an ex IBM engineer that worked on CELL will help you out...

@All

I especially loved the focus on Multi-core support (SMP)! Much-needed, as well as all of the plans! AmigaOS 4.2 for 2010, perhaps?

I love this! I truly love it! Excellent! Full party this weekend! Yahoo!

In other words, you will say me (and for all other) : that OS4 does not need memory protection ? (just want to be sure that i understand you right). And did i understand you well:
for you it's no problem when you run 20 apps at one time, works in it, and then, only one little buggy app (you will never have all apps without bugs , it's just a computer) and when that app crash your machine for the reboot - it's all ok for you ? I am correct ?

If i am correct in both topics, so .. we have different opinion about OS and about work on it.

Looks like i am a bit misunderstood what you try to say. But i think you agree that MP are must for the making stable user-friendly OS ?

Personally from user side, only that problem that one little app can crash all my work are the most problematic for me. If HYperion can solve that without full MP integration, well, than good for all of us. But i think it's pretty hard (everythink possible , but still, will be hard).

For example, i running editpad, tunenet, diropus4 (and all the files open which i need for), owb (with need for me url, and maybe more deep than just main page). Maybe some game in backgorund (with pause), and then, i just try to compile somethink, or run some programm and coommooonn, some freeze or crash. From time to time, after that, i just poweroff my peg2, and swith back to the winxp :)

I talk all of this not becouse to be negative to os4 or to be positive to winxp , but we still need impovements and addition work on os4 to make it reall stable and good os. And MP are the one of the importan stepd for it (imho of course)

@kas1e, dax:
i think a hobby solution which natami obviously would be atm does not necessarily need a mp, but the official development of aos should probably aim for some solution for that. even on natami forum there are threads regarding a potential solutions.

btw, dax, why are you suggesting gunnar is not working with ibm anymore? he never stated anything like that to my knowledge.

They have been looking at it for a while now,"will be hard" seems to entail that they are starting now.
Probably we are in a "it has been hard" status right now (ie: after many months of work they are likely in an advanced state in that regard).

There are many ways to avoid that an application brings down the system and I strongly believe we are going to get at least one of these possible implementations in future versions of the OS.
Don worry!

He still is? didn't know that! Great

Natami might be hobby solution, but the engineering ideas Gunnar, Tomas and the others are bringing out are quite advanced in every sense!

- A more modern metallic-looking theme, although this may not be the default.
- Much bigger new icons as standard. Looks a bit OS X-ish IMHO.
- A new intuition, with shadows around windows, and extended ReAction.

Are there any screenshots of this stuff around? I'd like to have a look.
