@KimmoK

The FSB on the G5s were as high as 1.3GHz per processor. The G4s were 667Mhz.
I hope they do release something decent, but the economics of SoC designs are to save money and create inexpensive hardware.

Just a thought, but why doesn't someone contact Varisys and inquire about pricing, availability, CPU pairings and XMOS interfacing?

A sales rep should be able to provide this general information without reference to the AX1000.

Do it!

That would make a brilliant Amiga ad campaign.

This is exactly the reason A-eon/Hyperion said they didn't tell us, so as not to have a thousand Amiga forum posters bother them.
Anyway, why do that when speculation is much more fun and we're a lazy bunch anyway.
I reckon Thom should ring up....after all he's like a journalist and stuff..... that is..... unless he already did.

Spotted any PA6T in the wild? http://varisys.co.uk/processor%20boards.html .. hmmm...

The part i really don't understand,is why the secrecy about the CPU? In my view,it's pretty obvious the CPU is APM 83290. I would prefer the PA6T of course,but that is only wishful thinking from my part. Atleast it's a new Amiga in the pipeline,and hopefully it's the end of the dark ages.

It may be a yet unannounced variant of the APM 83K family. DesingCon is in Feb 1-4 2010, see link below, and AppliedMicro may be making some announcements there. This is pure speculation on my part...

http://www.power.org/events/designcon10

Also

There is still the possibility that the CPU has been slightly modified to "glue" in the XMOS processor. Also, pure speculation on my part.

My 2 Cents

Not really. Not unless if they want each board to cost ten grand.

Thanks for the link

That may of course explain the secrecy

By "glue" I meant to integrate into the SOC an xlink type inteface to the XMOS processor. Not putting the XMOS chip into the SOC. I do not know how feasible this is, although the 83K series SOC does have some programable on chip features which may or may not provide this possibility...

Again, speculation, I am not a chip designer by trade..

@JulArroyo

Changing even one transistor would make it a custom part, and in this situation those would be much more expensive because of the low volumes. It's much more likely that the SoC has a standard simple local bus (I2C, SPI) that connects it to the XMOS chip, which in turn has the code necessary to read the bus in the 8KB of OTP ROM. Another possibility is that the XMOS chip is connected to the PCIe bus and that's how it gets the code and data to boot from, but given the complexity of PCIe vs I2C/SPI (on a par with USB vs RS232) I doubt it. Something else that simple local buses have going for them is that they consume very few pins (one can get away with using just one wire), and those are a precious resource in programmable chips (because you want to use the pins for whatever your custom logic's doing).

Another possibility (and my personal guess :) is that some GPIO pins of the SoC are simply hooked up to the XCore's JTAG interface; Thus, the main CPU could bit-bang programming straight into the XCore chip, without the need to program the OTP ROM on each chip.

Of course, JTAG is not really something you'd want as the main conduit for data exchange between main CPU and XCore --- so here is to hoping that some other interface is also implemented.

@Caveman

somebody correct me if I am wrong (I'm lazy) but isnt the APM 83290 32bit?
isnt the mystry chip supposed to be 64bit?

Snappier at what? Opening windows? People use OS to run applications. Applications on AmigaOS does not speed up by magic of OS. AmigaOS does not provide features on par with OS X, so while you may have your boot time shorter (by seconds) and you have more "unused memory" (where unused is wasted) it won't run anything faster.

One thing is having a system that "acts" faster but has no data-crunching power, another is the same OS on a system that 1)could have a CPU as fast as a similarly clocked G5 (if it is the PA-Semi) and 2)can use several options for App hardware acceleration methods (from massive parallel data crunching on a mini-cluster of Xcores to GP-Gpu over PCI-E 16X).

But let's talk just responsiveness for a moment: even today if you a buy a Skulltrail super PC (2xIntelQuad generally factory overclocked to 4Ghz+4xNvidiaSli) you will have to face that raw power alone a snappier machine does not make. I can buy the weakest/cheapest i7 model and with a faster FSB, SDD, different OS (Win7 instead of Vista?) and an 80 eur Ati HD4830 my system will act snappier than that hulking mountain of raw power in many many tasks (actual comparison with benchmarks have been made of this).

This applies once the sleeker system is at least powerful enough (as is the case for the X1000 vs old macs).
There have been a ton of times where some configurations due to faster memory transfers (either because the transfer was really faster, or because one system accomplished something with smaller chunks of data due to a different OS) and a ton of other software inter-processes or hardware bandwidth ended up creating a snappier experience (in applications and everyday usage not just opening drawers), on systems with less CPU real estate.
Of course if there is a total lack of processing power it's a different story but it is not the case when we talk X1000.

The bottom line is that at this point in time, while there are concrete possibilities that OS4 on x1000 will feel more responsive than OSX on those macs (that is what I meant in my previous post), it might be (nobody knows yet, which includes the likes of DAX and OPI) that the X1000 will be better at data crounching too (thanks to a plethora of different possibilities, which include the actual still unknown CPU, GP-GPU and Xorro expansion).

Way too early to say...

so why should we aw users have to dig out this information and bring it to the aw forum??, when this info should be easly available on hyperions site or the x1000 makers site, its beyond me....

Right. I'm unable to write my own opinions. It all comes from secret shared documents we have. It's written in blood of virgins. It's all about destroying AmigaOS! Muhahaha.

[snip]

I'm not going into that. This will turn into pointless arguing.

@opi

It is ok, your reply was alright, but not really answering what I was trying to ask, but luckily for me, and everyone else in the thread here, KIMMOK and someone else managed to give me some answers.

So all in all, thank you for the answers, appreciated, made me look at it in a different light.

Cheers
