Hello.

As I said, I repaired myseld a G4 XE module by changing the CPU, a CyberstormPPC by reballing the 604e. I trained a lot on PowerMac modules and got excellent results.













- I got G4 (7455@1000) from PowerMac modules.

- I can try replace your G4 for an affordable price. ( ~ 40 euros + shipping)

- In most cases, it will work.

- In some cases, it won't, and module may be destroyed.

- In last case, I don't want poursuit.

Have to go to work, more informations tonight.

If i remember right, G4 with 1.25ghz and 1.5ghz was avail for public ? (1.25 definately was). I think from time to time, to change cpu in my peg2 , from 1000ghz to 1250 or to 1500 :) Not that i very need it, but its nice when everything works faster (like some heavy games and apps).

Replacing a working CPU is a bad idea. The module may be damaged and you'll just have your eyes to cry. Acube refused to do it with professional material, there is a good reason.

But when the CPU is dead, trying cost nothing.

Now, can you make up a middle man module (The MMM) that will convert a Mac CPU module into an A1 compatible one?

There's methods of making it easier, such as the ball tray it seems this guy uses. Still need some hot air tools since you can't use a soldering pencil/iron with BGA.

Out of curiosity, what's the fastest G4 that's compatible? I think there's a 1.7GHz 7448 but not sure if that is pin or voltage compatible or if there's jumper settings for that. I don't know if that was the last model or if the 745x were newer, forget now but think 7448 was toward the end of the G4 line.

The fastest pin compatible G4 CPU should be the 7457. AFAIK the 7448 lacks the L3 cache interface, so I guess it is not pin compatible.

I got curious so went looking. From MPC7448EC.pdf datasheet, page 25,

So it might work, but sounds like we shouldn't expect to achieve the highest clock speeds. I doubt those no-connects are correct power/ground that 7448 needs for the highest speeds... Not sure where our power supply would give out.

Replacing a BGA with a hot air station is "not very hard", but it needs practice.

Good use = perfectly unsoldered CPU.
Bad use = burned PCB.

This happened to me with my first CPU module, my AOne dead 6 years ago. But I continued training and won't (I hope) make the same errors.

The reballing itself is quite easy, but placing the balls can easy destroy nerves and eyes.



About possible G4. The fastest G4 I've seen are 7448A@2.0 Ghz. They should be electrically compatible but AFAIK they are designed to run at a 200 Mhz FSB and can't be compatible with a 133 one + we don't have the required PLL to run 2.0 Ghz with 133 FSB (15x). Moreover, they are quite impossible to find.

The 7447/7457 are the same but the 7447 don't have L3 controller. So a 7447 is fine for an XE, except it has only been used in powerbook. I don't want to destroy a PowerBook to repair an XE module.

So best options are 7455 and 7457.

1 Ghz modules uses (mostly) 7455. Non-overclockable (1066 max).
1.25 Ghz modules uses (mostly) 7455A/7455B. Quite overclockable (up to 1.4+ Ghz).
Some 1.25 Ghz uses 7457.

I've bought two 7457 and one 7455B, both at 1.25 Ghz. Faster modules are too expensives. I should be able to test them shortly.

Moreover, the G4 PLL should be set with 5 dips. The XE only have 4. We can't go above 1266 Mhz with the 4 dip switchs. To do this, the 5th dips must be soldered manually, but I don't know witch track is dedicated to this on the module.

If somebody got a dead module, and if he is sure he will never repair it (Sam, Peg2, X1000...), this module could be used to try fasters CPU mods, if he accept. This could be helpfull to repair other modules.

well it is just a question not a real wish, because it was replaced by a G4 by JJ Boulet (the only one available at that time) from Serele/AmigaCenter so I have a dead module lying around !

YES, it was in sept/oct 2005 and cost me 300 euros ! he had a spare mobo+module so he simply replaced my dead G3 750fx + module by a G4 74xx + module and it is working since that time (5 years now, not even changed the cooling or the voltage) nearly everyday !

I still have the G3+module with me, thats why I am asking, in case my G4 goes kaputt one day (even if I am not sure I will be able to exchange the 2 modules with all these pins !). So if you can replace it, it is very good news, if not it is fine also

Do you have a higher-res version of the first picture, the one without the CPU on the module? Maybe someone (like me) could try tracing out the lines on the module to see where one might be able to hook up that fifth multiplier switch.

I guess, if one were clever enough, one could make a small PCB wafer that was a BGA on bottom to connect to the CPU module and a BGA on top to accept the CPU, and provide extra clock divider switch, perhaps also adjust prevously no-connect pins to power/ground for 7448 highest clock rates, and additional power connection if needed for that.
