@Seiya

So no USB2 for Update 3? Agh. Guess I'll postpone buying the 460ex then.

I just re-read status report again, and "The focus of Update 3 is system stability and bug fixes" make me think, that update2 already stable pretty much. Of course there is some bugs in warp3d which was fixed, in usb1.1, in crossdos , mui was updated, that all fine and good. But what about that start-to-be-funny-for-everyone new shell and usb2.0 ? Why Ssolie say nothing about ?

@tonyw
For sure you should know will your new shell in the update3 or not ? Or its not ready still after all those years ?:) (i not saying about article on blog about which you say half of year ago :) ). Imho you can say it with no problems for us, as it all already on finish line.

@Steven
If you read the topic (i am sure you briefly do it :) ) , can i suggest to include with every update, full list of changes in every components which was touched ( i mean something like morphos guys do with every update). Not something like "warp3d was fixed" , "usb bugs was addressed", but just some technical list of changes and bug-fixes. Just to make users know what exactly was fixed/changed.

Sam460 not have onboard sound support for now, so its for sure a bit early to buy. But yes, as usb2.0 already done, and still, will not released, its suck a lot.

I'm a big fan of frequent releases so I tend to lean towards releasing early and more often.

Ideally I'd like to see not only frequent releases but PREDICTABLE releases. Something along the lines of Ubuntu, where they release what they have every 6 months. It does not matter if the release would only have a few things in it.

Of course this would require (at least) a bit more effort & coordination, but I suspect it would be worth it.

Through, nothing about USB2.0 and new shell. That a bit scare me. Can't believe that update3 will not have new shell and usb2 .. (which all already done as i know)

I don't think Update 3 will have those things in it, because they are (fairly significant) *new features*, and Update 3 will be free. In general free updates should be bug fixes not new features. Update 1 was a very unusual (and much appreciated) exception to that.

The blog post also mentions AmigaOS4.2, and I think it is logical that most new features will appear in this, since it will be paid for. They also gave an idea of the timetable for OS4.2: About the time that the X1000 is released. Of course we don't know exactly when that is, but they have continued to post reports on their web site about progress.

@ChrisH

Yeah, while for me its bad that update3 will have no new shell and no usb2.0, its sounds pretty logical to have all of this in the amigaos4.2 , together with gallium/mesa and stuff. I.e. if i be hyperion, i put all the intersting and good stuff to amigaos4.2 as well, and does not matter what users will moaning.

All in all, for me update3 make sence because of a lot of works over mui as well as warp3d fixes. In meanwhile users can play with mui-owb and its better to have it right now, in compare with waiting another half or year.

AmigaONE-XE/SE/Micro/Sam440:

The most important part of this update is MUI fixes / updates, so we can run MUI OWB, fixes for CrossDOS, USB are also welcome.

Sam460:

ACube-Systems is responsible for some of the drivers on Sam460, I think its internal SATA2 and Audio chips, Audio is not critical if you have sound blaster live card, but then you are limited to the internal SATA2 controller whit out DMA support, You can work around not having many SATA ports by using USB ports for external CDROM driver, SD card readers, etc, not having 3D support most be also a bit disappointing until the release of AmigaONE-X1000.

General:

USB2 support should have been released whit Sam440/Sam460.
"New shell" is new thing it belongs in AmigaOS4.2 and not in an update for AmigaOS4.1.

It’s common practice for Hyperion to release a more detailed list of changes when update is ready.
The last line when SSolie talks about a maybe update 4, he hints about other bug fixes that might be included or not in update 3.

With "new shell" you mean an updated console handler, right?

@kolla

It’s a shell that supports Tab’s, I don’t know if it includes UTF8 support or not.

About the Sam460 audio driver read this.

Audio driver update

We would like to update you all on the development of the SAM460 audio driver. This was a lot more complicated than originally anticipated due to the nature of the SM502 chip.
Anyway we are happy to inform you that Ross Vumbaca in association with ACube Systems, has released an initial version of the SAM460 audio driver to the OS4 beta testing team.
It is expected that this driver will then shortly be released to all other SAM460 owners.
The SAM460 audio driver supports both the SAM460ex and the newly released SAM460 lite.
Thank you to all SAM460 owners for their patience and understanding during this time!

I do not know why you write all of this. I know all of this, and i know about mui fixes of course, because at least with my help all of this done. And about audio driver on sam460 i also know that its in betatesting, but its not avail for end users for now. What the point of those posts ? Sometime i have feeling that you have vox-syndrom :)

Yeah. Its a bit more compilcated of course that just updated-consolde-handler, but in general yes. That stuff was shown i think 1.5 years ago on some show like "soon will be released", and then nothing about. I ask tonyw (who write it), few time about when, and he say that its going to betatest, as well, as he want to write article on hyperion blog about very soon (that was half of year ago as well :) )

Well reading through this as I was just about to quote the same thing NutsAboutAmiga did. Max finished the driver literally weeks ago, how long does it take to get a SAM 460, turn it on make sure audio is heard? Under 2 minutes. I can't imagine there is anything more to it than that.

@djrikki

The news I remember said that only an initial driver was done. So as it seams the driver was not bug free and needed some time.

It’s not always easy to understand what you intend to say, don’t take it the wrong way.

@kas1e:
in fact, it sounds like update3 is going to contain mostly the work done by your team to enable owb mui port for os4. at least if that might be soon available its a small step ahead.

It has been now confirmed by m3x on Iksnet that USB2 support (i.e. the ehci driver) will be included in update3. I guess I'll order a PCI USB2 interface soon :)

If someone wants to know how to enable tabbing and history with the new console/shell: go and download GfxBench2D. Inside the package someone can find something like this:

WINDOW=CON:50/50/600/350/AmigaShell/CLOSE/HISTORY/TABBED
