London, 7th March 2011

Penguins anyone?

As part of the pre-qualification process Varisys have created a minimal PowerPC Linux kernel to ensure that all components and subsystems are working as expected on the revision 2 Nemo motherboard. Understandably, Linux driver support is far more extensive and by creating a minimal Linux system Varisys can demonstrate that the board they deliver to the AmigaOS4 developers it fit for purpose. As an extension of this testing process we have commissioned Varisys to create a desktop Linux port complete with GUI. Although we realize that many Amigans will exclusively run AmigaOS4 we thought that giving the AmigaOne X1000 a working Linux option would add extra value and allow users to run software and utilities that may not be currently available under AmigaOS4.

"It don't matter if you're black or white"

We have been working very closely with AmigaKit to produce "AmigaOne X1000" and "Boing Ball" branded peripherals and merchandise to compliment the excellent A1-X1000 tower case design created by Andrew Korn. In July 2010, AmigaKit began selling a matching black A1-X1000 PS/2 & USB compatible "Boing Ball" keyboard and mouse. These peripherals can be used with the SAM range as well as PC or Mac computers and are also compatible with Classic Amigas by using Cocolino, Micromys, Subway USB or Deneb USB devices. The original A1-X1000 design was based around a black tower case but, after receiving many requests from customers, we decided to also produce a white version with matching keyboard and mouse combination. AmigaKit began stocking the white mouse at the end of 2010 and hope to be in a position to offer customers and Amiga resellers a choice of the black or white "Boing Ball" tower case in the near future.

@eder

sounds like a long way to go yet, but at least it seems to indicate that the board has been proven basically working.

A white version is REALLY cool...
I hope it will be really white, like Macs (and not grey).

Good work!

assuming the case will use the same plastics as the define R3 from fractal design, it is very white indeed. 'arctic' white, in fact.

i'm glad they're offering different colors, but i much prefer the black.

That's a good way to test hardware.

I hope AEon will not try reinvent the wheel and just sponsor some hardware to Debian/OpenSuSE developers and get a proper, supported code with patches upstream.

Oh! Thank goodness.

Everything in my home reflects the purity of white, even my pure BS.

Er, ah, it doesn't have white letters on the white keyboard I hope.

That is not our intention. However, it made sense (to me at least) to leverage off the work Varisys had done. I use Linux (Debian) on my Sam Flex and Ubuntu (v8.10) on my Pegaos II and x86 Netbook (v10.10) I would like the option to use Linux my A1-X1000 but first and foremost it will be running AmigaOS4.

As for continuing Linux support in the future, we are in contact with one of the original PA6T developers who maintains the Linux port.

So you're going (Varisys, actually) develop your own distribution for desktop? I'm not talking about your test suit, that should be build in house. As AmigaOne history has shown not having upstream patches in kernel and a grown up distro can be bad for users, you're not only forced to use something that lacks in quality but also be forced to maintain your own kernel tree.

We need to distinguish two things: Linux as in kernel (that's what the P6 guy will be maintaining, right) with all associated drivers and a distribution based on Linux kernel, GNU tools and rest of the desktop env. Keeping your code in sync and upstreams makes your work easier as you get benefits from fixes made by other developers, maintaining your own code is more painful and labor intensive.

So I'm getting you're going to try to get kernel upstream (so I can download kernel source from kernel.org and target P6/X1000) and build your own distro around it?

@TrevorDick

So in other words.. X1000 is delayed even further?

Or is it still planned to ship beta testers with boards before end of Q1 2011?
My guess is OS4 is delaying shipment rather than hardware testing from
Varisys. But maybe you can't comment on this I'd guess.

It would be nice if Hyperion and/or A-eon could comment on how development
of OS4 for X1000 has went so far. What's done, what's left to do, current
problems and problems solved and more.. Maybe even an article with a little
more depth and personal views from the developers on the hardware and how
it is developing AmigaOS on this kind of hardware.
And then place it on the Hyperion blog.
