hmm.. interesting. Whats the status on AOS4 these days and possible target machines. Just a brief overview, anyone? :)

You can't for now make any real money with aos4 in terms of commercical game (you will have just about 10-100 maximum copies sold). But in others, its already matured enough and have all what need : SDL, OpenGL (without shaders, but still) and all the other necessary stuff.

As i say before , if your game are plain SDL or SDL+opengl, or even maybe Alegro, then it can be easy ported almost without any changes.

All in all, its game from amiga, and you post news about it on amiga site, so you must to release aos4 version as well :)

.. :) We need to reach a sustainable level, which i mentioned earlier. Then one could ask when is that going to happen? The answer to that is... Since last fall things have slowly moved in that direction and there is yet a bit to go. But it is a great first step to see you Amiga users stepping up and trying to persuade me. (even though martin would in the end be the one, once a sustainable level has been reached)
Also I think it may interest some Amiga users to see what happens to some of their past favorite games... maybe we are on a wild big tour.. ending up from where it all started.. ;)

Well I would prefer a native AmigaOS 4.x version over something based on multi-platform libraries (SDL, ...).

It could be a real "killer application" as it was back in time :)

@Massi

SDL on aos4 is native as much as possible. I.e. any programm which use SDL its already native enough on aos4. Just sometime some SDL programms suck by itself, but its not problems of SDL, its problem of programmers.

After many ports, i can say that our current SDL are good enough, and make no sense works with SDL, or manually use all that p96, blit functions , ahi and so on. Its just some myth that SDL are slow: slow only some programms which done on SDL bad.

OK, I understand your point of view.

I am not very much into SDL but I believe if one wants to take advantage of certain unique OS features (composite engine effects, ...), directly programming the OS is the best way.

@Massi

It will make sense only for someone who deeply in aos4 , but for something like which we discuss now, for sure better way just to port it as it is (because in other, chances to have port are very-very low).

Anyway, writing the same game but fully native, its just the same recreating of wheel, tons of work , which will not have commercical success (just because of low user base), while plain port will not take too much time.

But, if that game are done already with using of something like Java, QT (in menu for example), or even maybe with using of shaders, then no port will be even if it use SDL there and there.

@TorbenLarsen

So how done that game ? SDL ? Or something else ? Will be nice to know full deps (just to be sure if it make any sense to discuss port futher or not).

It is made purely in c/c++ using opengl as the grfx api, which should make it alot easier to port to other systems. In fact it may be the first amiga game to have been ported this way. :)

Quote:
It's so close to the original that I had to re-confirm with the developers that it is not, in fact, running under emulation. While the original Battle Squadron was written in 68000 assembly, Battle Squadron ONE for iOS is a line-by-line C/C++ rewrite, based on the original source code (which Pedersen had stored on floppies in a box in his basement these long years). It's likely the first entirely recoded Amiga game to land on the iOS platform.

@kas1e
OpenAL would be the most natural choice on the iPad.
In case you're really going to port it, feel free to contact me if you get stuck somewhere. I was hired to do the programming of some heavier iPhone/iPad/Android games in the past, so I'm pretty deep into it.

Daytona675, you are right. It is OpenAL, which seems to be the most logical thing to use :)
Sounds interesting with past smartphones dev. any links you want to show us of your dev? :)

@TorbenLarsen & Daytona675x

OpenAl its even easer that FMOD or SDL_Mixer. We have already all necessary libs , and OpenAL works fine and i use it in ports pretty offten.

@TorbenLarsen

What about current sources, i can try to port what you have already :)

@Daytona675x

I bought the collector's edition of battle squadron to play on my A1XEG4 and it works great.

Now I bought AOS4.1 for my A1200 (PPC240Mhz/68060) and was wondering whether it is supposed to work on this machine.
When I launch it, I only get a black screen but I can hear the music title

@tlosm

maybe, I only have my Permedia2 and no Mediator (so no Voodoo and no Radeon)

the thing is there is no indication on the AOS4 requirements, either on the DVD box or in the pdf on the CD
