@Thread

Interesting IRC chat today as Muse or Ben Hermans of Hyperion and A-eon drops in for a chat.

[17:27:36] [Join] Muse (Webchat@38be9aca.2e1bf8a9.17dc4bf9.25ea667fX)
[17:34:11] *magic* Its actually quite amazing how were using all these appicatoins under amiga os4 with out any 3d drivers imagine how fast os4 will run once we get them
[17:34:47] *Muse* 3D drivers are in full development. Most advanced ever.
[[17:36:41] *Muse* When is Steven Solie speaking?
[[17:36:58] *jahcX1000* Muse: he was on about an hour ago
[17:37:21] *Muse* Aha, any special announcements? I
[17:37:38] *asymetrix* his speech wasnt that long, but may seem so to some..
[17:37:53] *Spectre660* Solie should be back in about 4.5 hours at the Banquet
[17:38:06] *jahcX1000* Spectre660 ah ok, thanks.
[1[17:38:28] *Muse* There will be some interesting info in that speech, I hope Bill's equipment will last.
[17:38:36] *Muse* Oh yes
[17:40:51] *Muse* You mean the X1000?
[17:40:55] *jahcX1000* Muse yep.
[17:41:04] *amix* i thought it had artificial mind jahc
[17:41:05] *Muse* I'd better, we ported it quite a while ago.
[17:41:06] *jahcX1000* Muse: dont tell anyone though, that information is for you guys only.
[17:41:07] *amix* ;p
[17:41:23] *Muse* Don't worry.
[17:41:29] *jahcX1000* you ported it? who are you? hehe
[17:41:39] *Muse* Hyperion
[17:41:43] *Spectre660* Jahc does your NDA have a cut out the tongue clause ?:D
[17:41:53] *jahcX1000* Muse: oh you're THAT Muse..
[17:42:09] *Muse* The NDA was not that bad. I drafted it, no torture clauses ,)
[17:42:13] *asymetrix* how many Muses r there ?
[17:42:17] *jahcX1000* I forget your nick because you only come on IRC once or twice a year :)
[17:42:30] *Muse* Just one if you don't count the band
[17:43:12] *amix* Muse: your from Hyperion?
[17:43:20] *Muse* Okay, so we have the same musical taste;)
[17:43:25] *Muse* Yes, director
[17:43:31] *asymetrix* is hyperion at the show yet ?
[17:43:39] *Muse* We are represented by Steven Solie
[17:43:49] *Muse* Could not make it from Europe this year
[[17:44:14] *asymetrix* i thought the brothers r coming ?
[17:44:19] *Muse* Nope.
[[17:44:40] *Muse* Too much work on Timberwolf, X1000 and Gallium 3D
[17:45:03] *asymetrix* understandable - they work too much
[17:45:04] *amix* Muse: how far is Timberwolf?
[17:45:47] *Muse* Pretty far. A video is going to be released soon. Not the best quality but not everyone can be at Amiwest
[17:45:51] *jahcX1000* if we ever got a laptop, we'd have to ramp up support for the webcam used in it..
[[17:46:07] *asymetrix* indeed
[17:46:26] *Muse* Be careful for what you wish for :)
[[17:47:16] *jahcX1000* its cool to be spending time on my Amiga.... I missed it. The Flex was cool, but it was lacking for speed at times....
[17:47:18] *Muse* Darn, need to go. Be sure to listen to Steven's speech, if you can
[17:47:23] *jahcX1000* stay Muse
[17:47:25] *jahcX1000* STAAAY
[[17:48:22] *Muse* Sorry, duty calls. Glad to see that X1000 is working out for you. Beautiful and unique piece of hardware on which we spent quite some time.
[[17:48:33] *jahcX1000* we being Hyperion of course. hehe
[17:48:49] *amix* Muse: the price is toooo hiigh
[17:48:57] *Muse* Booting times on OS 4 can be reduced drastically if that were a priority
[17:48:59] *amix* even for norwegians that earns that money
[17:49:12] *asymetrix* why does X1000 use such slow DDR2 speed memory ?
[17:49:18] *Muse* It is a collector's item. Mark my words.
[17:49:26] *Derfs* asymetrix: as thats what the memory bus is for the cpu
[17:49:32] *Muse* It can do dual 1066 Mhz.
[17:49:46] *Muse* That's the max spec for the DDR2
[17:49:49] *amix* Muse: collectors item for £1699 ???
[[17:50:23] *Muse* I would specify with your dealer if you want that type of memory.
[17:50:23] *amix* MorphOS 3 on PowerBook G4 is far more reliable.. i got myself an powerbook for £150
[17:50:47] *jahcX1000* amix: more reliable than what?
[17:50:50] *Derfs* reliable?
[17:51:05] *Muse* Yeah, real collector's item there. Second hand piece of Apple branded hardware. The real Amiga experience ;)
[[17:51:09] *amix* then you can try to convience me with buying X1000 for £1699
[17:51:16] *asymetrix* i want to hear future of PPC processors
[17:51:30] *Muse* I'm not going to convince you.
[17:51:49] *Spectre660* Collectors item tip should tell the wise plenty
[17:52:11] *Muse* By all means use MOS on your discontinued for years hardware without warranty. You can get 10 of them for the price of one X1000.
[17:52:13] *mbrantley* tells me something else may be coming. ???
[17:52:22] *amix* Muse: but even a PowerMac G5 with dual PPC costs around £300 here in Norway
[17:52:42] *asymetrix* im not interested in outdated stuff
[17:52:45] *Muse* Irrelevant.
[17:52:47] *Derfs* amix: economies of scale
[17:53:15] *Muse* A collector's item is like a limited edition of certain top of the line sport cars.
[17:53:39] *Muse* TDP on the G5 is awful BTW.
[17:53:52] *asymetrix* i hope they analyze costs of X1000 BOM and create A1 x500 $400 cost reduced version
[17:53:56] *mbrantley* What's TDP?
[17:53:57] *amix* jahcX1000: you got X1000 for free ;p we others have to pay and strip naked to get a X1000 for a year to be able to get it
[17:54:05] *jahcX1000* no I didnt.
[17:54:29] *amix* ohh
[17:54:30] *asymetrix* strip naked ? ehem some do much , much more..
[17:54:42] *amix* but half of the price or something then?
[17:54:47] *jahcX1000* we got slight discounts, but it was still expensive. I bought it because I wanted to experience the latest and greatest Amiga before I died. hehe
[17:54:52] *amix* asymetrix: ;)
[17:55:08] *jahcX1000* I'm dying. :(
[17:55:09] *Muse* Won't be the greatest Amiga, trust me on that.
[17:55:26] *asymetrix* why ?
[17:55:26] *Muse* But it will be the most valuable.
[17:55:33] *Derfs* Muse: you just destroyed his dying wish ;)
[17:55:35] *jahcX1000* well technically I'm dying, because after age 21 your body is in a state of decline.
[17:55:44] *Muse* 30 is more like it.
[17:55:50] *Muse* Where it counts.
[17:55:56] *Muse* Your brain.
[17:55:58] *asymetrix* as soon as your born - your starting to die..
[17:56:02] *mbrantley* was about 22 here. ;)
[17:56:09] *Spectre660* Another tip for the wise :)
[17:56:20] *jahcX1000* no you're growing until your 20's
[17:56:25] *jahcX1000* I'm 31.
[17:56:31] *jahcX1000* I'll miss you guys.
[17:56:33] *mbrantley* Spectre660: I'm noting these tips.
[17:56:41] *magic* asymetrix, thats really depressing thanks
[17:56:42] *asymetrix* but your still time wise on countdown
[17:56:44] *jahcX1000* well I wont miss magic.
[17:56:48] *jahcX1000* mainly because I'm taking him with me.
[17:56:54] *jahcX1000* lol
[17:56:55] *magic* oh crap
[17:56:59] *magic* im ####ed
[17:57:03] *jahcX1000* magic: it'll be fun
[17:57:05] *Darth_X* jahcX1000: and me too?!
[17:57:16] *jahcX1000* end of joke.
[17:57:25] *magic* Darth_X, naa #### off your a troll :P
[17:57:32] *mbrantley* jaxcX1000: So 15 years ago you were 16. :)
[17:57:36] *Spectre660* Mbratley: you got to be able to read press release and IRC body language
[17:57:41] *Muse* Enjoy the show guys and always expect the unexpected! :)
[17:58:00] *mbrantley* IRC body language ... need to work on that.
[17:58:01] * jahcX1000 's finger hovers over the ban button.. sees that he has no ops anymore.. then clicks back on the chat string gadget...
[17:58:09] [Quit] Muse (Webchat@38be9aca.2e1bf8a9.17dc4bf9.25ea667fX) (Quit: AmigaworldNET Webchat - http://chat.amigaworld.net/webchat.php)
[[17:58:27] *Darth_X* Muse: unexpected, how about affordable low cost amiga hardware?
[[17:59:13] *amix* Hyperion is soo negative towards MorphOS
[17:59:22] *amix* then I like Trevor which is equal
[17:59:35] *jahcX1000* amix: dont focus on that stuff..
[17:59:39] *mbrantley* Trevor seems like such a nice fellow.
[17:59:40] *amix* would be nice if the community started to work together instead of blaming each sides
[17:59:52] *amix* mbrantley: yes
[17:59:55] *jahcX1000* focus on enjoying the software thats available.
[17:59:56] *amix* indeed
[17:59:58] *magic* wheres the almighty ben hermans?
[18:00:10] * magic bows down to thy master
[18:00:14] *amix* jahcX1000: focus on people doing good things for this community, not bad
[18:00:14] *jahcX1000* magic: Muse
[18:00:15] *jahcX1000* hes gone
[18:00:22] *magic* really ben was muse?
[18:00:29] *jahcX1000* magic: was and still is.
[18:00:29] *magic* well bugger me sideways
[18:00:30] *jahcX1000* hehe
[18:00:34] *asymetrix* i would have though hermans announce a few secret software projects ..
[18:00:34] *magic* i never knew that

Well so far I've nodded of twice trying to watch this thing, some pretty weird presentations, some guy earlier giving advice where to buy Amiga hardware !!!

Only thing he said was about AmigaKit and eBay, kinda obvious info to anyone watching or in attendance as the place is hardly choc-a-block with newcomers to the Amiga scene...

Is there hope that this thing may pick up or is this it !!!

Been a fun show so far. Arrived at the 10AM opening, stayed all day, watched all the presentations, and now in my room waiting for the 7PM banquet.

Attended Amiwest last year but did not do the banquet so this time doing the whole shebang, staying overnight tonight, and meeting folks.

Nice to meet a few fellow forums members here so far, sundown and moxee and tekmage, along with saying hello again to a couple folks I know from last year or had purchased items from in the past. Chad & Tony I believe it was who also were at last years show.

Is the show worth it, you betcha!

Physical audience on site is always limited, but server shows new record for watching the video feed by far.

You would have enjoyed being at the show. Present on site: Michael (Amiga Forever), FPGA arcade (which everyone seems to adore on a.org), MCC-216 (which Robert brought), Jens, classic tables, etc.

Well ask the guy with the camera to wander around and transmit some of these things that are going on and even chat to people, cos so far staring at some staff setting up tables and a couple of guys heads sitting in front of a computer is hardly riveting...

Be nice to see what's actually going and put some faces to site members and hear what their talking about and such like...

@Franko

The main issue last year was audio quality, which was well addressed this year.
But we have a limited number of volunteers and they had to work together to be SURE audio met expectations this time around.
Robert is filming independently.
Viva Amiga is there.
Surely there will be additional coverage beyond the scheduled presentations you've seen to date.
Anything more than that, the A/V crew would have to comment on. I believe a lot of equipment had to be made stationary to avoid additional issues we had, like people tripping over wires and such. Therefore, filming at individual booths might be impossible. dunno. I'm not there.

Erm... you said I would have "enjoyed being being at the show" so from that I would presume you are there, now you say "I'm not there"...

So are you there or not and if not why not and where are you then...

Might get a bit exiting now as it looks like it getting near to dinner time, maybe someone will get drunk and start blabbing some secrets or singing some songs, or someone might choke on a chicken bone and the paramedics will arrive...

So far it reminds me of one of those "live" wildlife watch programmes like "Badger Watch" where the camera sits there for twelve hours and nothing happens and the highlight of the event is a quick glimpse of the badgers nose peeking out of the set for a fraction of a second...

Think I'll go to bed now, as for some reason I'm feeling very drowsy...

Heh. No. I know your affinity for classic Amiga, so that's the reason I listed what I did and said you would have enjoyed it.

Mr Solie has just announced that it is soon going to be practical for me to join in the OS4 fun with a 12" netbook in Q1 1012 (at the ealiest) for only a few hundred US$ (hopefully)

known specs sound similar to the Limebook but with a bigger screen, could be more powerful but those specs would do me fine in a netbook it's hard to tell with all his laughing.

It's what i have been waiting for for a very long time, now I won't have to go with MorphOS on a big old powerbook or a SinclairUK spectrum laptop with Sinclair OS after all. hope it all comes to fruition.

It's the one thing that can bring people back to Amiga OS, well done fellers.

I should be in bed, its after 5am but for some reason i have stayed up for this but i'm glad i did now.

@TheMaskedMuchacho

Yeah 5.35am here too lol

Yeah great news, details are vague at present, but he did say 12" netbook running the latest amigaos for around $300-$500. PPC Jit compiler was mentioned - so presumably this is running on x86 commodity hardware under emulation.. hope I understood that part correctly.

Thats great news for everyone. :)

Personally I wouldn't worry about it being 12" screen either as most netbooks these days have video so you can hook up to a proper monitor or projector when needed.

@djrikki

No he said e300 CPU. He was talking about the 68k JIT for PowerPC.

$300 NetBook with OS4.x included is awesome.

@TheKorn

Yup, E300 core so could be an MPC5121e and powervr graphics, very similar specs so far to the Limebook although that only had a 7 or 8" screen. could be related I suppose or could be something completely unrelated but even if it runs at 400mhz like the limebook did, I'm still interested, even for $500 (about £315 and will probably need to add VAT to that but still fine with me)

Bit hard to hear the stream sometimes.

Ah cool - so its a freescale chip - w.o.w.

Okay that truly is awesome!

The question will be - how fast does it run (mhz vs ghz).

*starts googling*

@djrikki

I think the fastest e300 core is in the PowerQUICC II Pro at up to 667mhz

the MPC5121e is 400mhz.

This netbook is unlikely to be a fast machine but for what i need a netbook for (mainly web browsing) it will do the job and allow me to use AmigaOS, so i'll be happy if i can get one next year some time.

The Dinner Banquet at the Amiwest 2011 was good. This is what went down our stomachs.

@tekmage

Was nice meeting you today. You had some nice talks, and enjoyed the 15 games in 15 minutes.
