That the OS4 project is pretty much dead |
First of all, my response is reply to some ones writting that AmigaOS is dead and that Hyperion should admit it (!?)

Really we should not continue with that... I am the maintainer of a Aros 68k based distribution (working on a update at the moment ) and very involved in the whole project so I could say a lot of things now. But it really leads to nothing. So please stop at that point. |

There is a stright followup underway. Namely aros 68k. So it isnt dead at all. |
I do know subject is the nettop (sadly, nothing new learned there) but there is no evil or war in my words - I do say everything is AmigaOS continuation, but only really undeveloped and dead is OS 3.x series. Yes AROS 68k can use all 68k OS 3.x software and that is just great, but AROS 68k is not direct continuation of OS 3.x, but backport of AROS x86 / PPCLast edited by vox on 05-Aug-2012 at 02:10 PM. Sigh..
Yes AmigaOS is a continuation of AOS 3.1. in the sense that it is based on the old 3.1. 68k code and is based on the API. The problem is that it this too often used to downgrade the others. All are based on the 3.1. API so for me ALL are continuation of the old platform that stopped 1992. The problem for me is not to see AmigaOS is a continuation but the often expressed view that it is the ONLY continuation and then calling other "copies" (not from you but I read that in the past). Is that understandable? |

I only reacted to the others...
I think there is not much to talk about (at least propably until Amiwest) without knowing hardware and when it is buyable and only a pricerange (if that information is still correct) |

I think it is fair to say that they are all continuations, but they are heading in different directions. And that is not a bad thing There might come one day when we can take great benefits from that. |

| Probabily the netbook is going to be shipped with AmigaOS 4.2, so I strongly doubt it will be out before 2013... who knows anyway... _________________ A1200/020+68882 - 6 MB RAM - AmigaOS 3.0

Thanks for sharing the video link, been a long time since I last saw it.
So drivers development for the netbook has been going in parallel with the AmigaOne X1000 ones.
AFAIK the X1000 still misses driver for its integrated ethernet and audio (I might be wrong as I don't have one).
I'm with andres on this, will not probably see it before 2013 (if it's not dropped completely), except if they do plan to release it earlier in "beta form" with missing drivers. Last edited by Shufflepuck on 05-Aug-2012 at 03:35 PM.

Yes I know all these, and claim nothing else. Reality is that just OS 3.x is dead and no lomger developed, but continues to live on in 3 flavours.
AmigaOS 4 was only direct port of (sadly) OS 3.1 but is way beyond it. It is only continuation in name, but MorphOS was first PPC only AmigaOS continuation and AROS was first x86 native continuation (as well as only avail for ARM and for PPC also) and all deserve much respect.
So no copies, 3 new originals, even all of us would be happier if it was one AmigaOS 5.
Problem is only that small differences (MOS being oldest, fastest and most developed, AOS being only official, and AROS being most developed by community and only free and open source) make big fractions, and flammes, no need for that anymore.
Everyone can use AROS, and there is even common hardware for MOS on OS 4 (Classics and Pegs). Only real exploit is the brand exploit, as result of lawsuit and AmigaInc remaining name only rights.
That paints the picture. Surely would love to see more common projects like Magellan Bounty.
Also, since I cant use PAY PAL from Serbia, is there alternative way to support e.g. Magellan II bounty?Last edited by vox on 05-Aug-2012 at 04:25 PM.

This is the only Limebook video I could find showing LimeOS (Ubuntu PPC)LimeBook
Does it indicate the future performance of OS4? _________________ Future Acube and MOS supporter, fi di good, nothing fi di unprofessionals. Learn it harder way! |

MOS on efika should give more accurate estimation of AOS4 speed on the netbook. But perhaps firefox on the limebook indicates how fast timberwolf will be on it.
