Yeah. The Spotify project was started after I saw a demand here in AW. Since I know couple of people at Spotify I thought I might put them to use. The project is as mentioned a starting point for coming deals and its more tha status thing for us, plus Spotify gets more paying users. Win-win.
The DjNic bounty is another kind. He is a great resource in design and graphics amongst other things and we will benefit of this.
How the spotify project work will lay as a foundation of how to make deals with other companies. Other company contacts have been contacted already. |

I agree the projects are nothing alike. I just meant the community's outpouring of support/funding for worthy projects like these is similar and illustrate a trend.

Good point. Linux users tend to get the OS free and expect everything else to cost the same.
I believe it would be accurate to say Amiga user's tend to be disproportionately paying users, more apt to show their support through purchasing/subscribing etc. Which could be an even bigger factor as the community expands with projects like this attracting converts.

Hmm.. Wishing I could help, but the developers/contacts in my circle aren't doing Amiga-friendly things. More business-oriented stuff.
Contact networking could lead somewhere too. I.e. whom might these spotify developers and management know elsewhere where they could make an introduction. Even a "call for proposals"-type pitch might start to get an audience with a Spotify success story. Interesting.
What other companies are being contacted, if you can say?Last edited by jingof on 16-Feb-2012 at 09:21 AM.

I can't reveal that right now. I will tell you when we have "shaken hands". It's important not to scare them of.

As this has now become an AmigaOS only first assault, I will use the Aros netbook I purchased for it on another project.
Once this part of project is a success then perhaps I can get another and send it off to you to pass on. After all it is nice and portable and would make a cool little dev machine for porting to Aros and playing with for the lucky developer. Also it will show how versatile the Amiga market has become.
A good effort by all, good luck.

Yes, we decided to only present one OS for Spotify at this moment to avoid confusion. When we have analysed the result of this we know better how to proceed. This doesnt stop others from all camps to approach companies/developers. Just take it easy for the sake of all of us. If Spotify mentions Aros and/or MorphOS we will ofcourse help them out with this.

My offer to supply Aros hardware remains for when you and the project need it.
Have already earmarked a cool project to use the Netbook as bait for Aros.

Speaking of duck tape and gum, as a work around, it would seem the missing or out of date DNS lookup APIs could be stubbed and proxied to known remote hosts within the Spotify P2P network having the expected versions of those APIs. I.e. if the nodes in the P2P network are exchanging media stream fragments, why couldn't selected, known nodes in that same P2P exchange DNS lookup details as well? (Of course, all this assumes course granularity in how the calls are sequenced by the calling code.) Yes, it could be far less efficient and potentially incur more round trips, but it may be good enough to make a start.

You're already between 3 and 487 steps ahead of the process of providing for what Spotify may or may not be missing.
Simply put, I am confident that we already have pretty much everything it takes to make Spotify feel home and comfy, as far as the TCP/IP stack is concerned.
What isn't quite there may be attained by stretching what we have just a little bit, or by providing more current support code in the form of link libraries.
And that's it. All this talk of "puny, ancient Roadshow doesn't do this, so we'll have to have a new, impressive and most excellent TCP/IP stack, IPv6 support a must, of course" only leads up to what could be summed up as "now you have two problems". And this second problem easily eclipses the manageable challenges of providing for Spotify.

Hmm.. really? I think perhaps you missed the point of my post, because you go on to essentially repeat it (though with a much better analogy with the whole boat thing )

Perhaps point #1 of my original post wasn't clear, but this is _precisely_ what I meant. It was the whole point of my post, in fact. That so much discourse about "puny, ancient Roadshow" is premature, without knowing what they need. Maybe Roadshow, plus a few small tweaks will be sufficient.
And point #2 was that, worse case scenario, if they do need the diamond encrusted, gold-plated Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, maybe there is a way to borrow someone else's, meanwhile.
Basically, we crack the same egg from opposite sides... i.e. Roadshow++ or Nimitz, there's a shorter path than these 7 pages make it sound.Last edited by jingof on 16-Feb-2012 at 07:55 PM. Last edited by jingof on 16-Feb-2012 at 07:31 PM.

| Yesterday we delivered the Sam460 in a Fractal Mini case to Spotify. We showed them how to use it and also how to write simple network programs.
They were amazed by the amount of software available at os4depot and it blow their expectations away. Later on we took the spotify guys out to the local pub where we ate and drank lot of expensive beer. We treated them like kings and the funny thing is that they were excited to meet us too. Later on at the pub several Spotify guys turned up and asked a lot of questions so there will probably be many spotifiers fiddling around with the Amiga.
The bar tab landed on a third of the machines costs and I sponsored that. :) And we will have a follow up in two months time where there will be two more interesting companies drinking beer with us and talk Amiga.
We have provided them with a local OS4 coder in stockholm and a "within 24 hour support". They will probably turn up and register at these forums so treat them nice.
Ohh. yeah. Almost forgot. All you guys that contributed on the bounty will get signed photographs with them and their spotify tagged Amiga.
Please don't try to contact them directly and ask how the progress is going because we said they should do this at their own pace and have a lot of fun. That what this is all about.
They have a goal for this and we have a strategy for all this so please be good guys now.
Aros and MorphOS : We haven't forgot about you guys. More later on. ;)
Ps. I will come back to you with pictures from the event soon. Ds.
