Hi,

This morning i started my beloved µ only to find out that KB and mouse no longer function. Seems the PS/2 ports have taken a break.
USB at the rear have been granted a leave for unlimited time, so the front ports are now doing all the work.

@Noone in particular:

And an additional problem is presented due to the USB bus not properly handling the K/B. It looks like it cannot keep up with the speed (!) of my typing, which is actually very low. Characters dropping out of sequences, thereby mutilating words. Lots of screen flashing, especially when pressing any arrow keys, little console windows popping up by the score, telling me that some AllocVecTags() was not honoured and the like.

Oh, worries, worries, worries.

iirc, you have never ever put in a fresh battery. Or am I wrong?

Hihi, you are! Put a new one in last december or so. (maybe I haven't made sufficient fuss about it...).

Let me be wrong yet again. Heh.

iirc, you never ever cleaned your machine inside and out.

Regardless, you know #2 on the hit list - PSU.

The machine functions 'properly', so how can that be it the PSU is malfunctioning?

@OldFart

I'm just going down the check list. Let's avoid the "how can" for now.

Had you made any changes recently either h/w or s/w wise?

Regardless, we are all aware of your unique booting setup. You might be able to eliminate some angst by setting up a boot partition that is "normal" with a clean install. If everything suddenly looks good, then you'll know it's something simple. A failure on that test would steer us in another trouble shooting direction of course.

Forgot the mandator bit about battery.
We've had numerous cases of batteries purchased that were almost dead at the point of purchase. And when they go...they go fast. The question is really "is it still over 3v"?

No, for both.

Just switched it off yesterday and switched it on this morning.
At first obly the mouse was disabled, replaced it with another one just to find out that no red light was showing from its bottomsurface so no mvements could be registered. Neither was a button functioning.
The K/B however seemed to work first, but did not do so later.

Hang on, wait a moment, I'll be back in a minute.

No, for both. --> This might be the wrong answer.

PS/2 working again!

What did i do, that I should not have?
I edited KickLayout to exclude gameport.device from inclusion. Put it back in and it's functioning again.

Stupid me (even more so): all occurrences of that line, 5 in total, I had commented out. Had i not done that i could have booted from one of the other iterations still intact, Upd 3 would have done perfectly well.

Why did i do it? In some 460ex thread somebody had commented it out with the remark that when your machine does not have a gameport you could leave it out and I am fair game...

Thanks

OldFart

Congrats.

I had already made a bet with myself that it was all about your custom setups. I was close. Heh.

My µA1 mostly sits in the closet as a backup for my SAM but before I got the SAM I had serious problems with the µA1 CPU cooling fins getting completely clogged with dust every couple of months. I had to periodically remove the CPU fan and clean the cooling fins. It would be a shame if your PS/2 inputs are dead; my µ1 was more stable using PS/2 input than USB.

EDIT: Guess I was a little late with this post but checking the CPU fins is a good idea anyway.

I had the exact opposite experience. The machine are "interrupt challenged" and PS/2 is interrupt driven, whilst USB is task driven.
The results you have with Micro depend very much on (1)which batch your board came from and (2)your usage.
There is no doubt that less stress and slower makes for greater stability. Not exactly the rules we want to have to follow with a machine, but nevertheless that's the way it is.

Understood, but the policy with the A1s was to slow them down, not speed them up. In fact Hyperion clearly stated nothing over 800mhz would get Hyperion support. (that didn't stop 3rd party people with utilities like seta1 and overclockers though)

I know nothing of policy on the other platforms.

@OldFart

You should disable game ports you don't use in AmigaInput not in kickstart layout.
