Either my AmigaOne XE G4 bit the dust today or it's battery did. It showed all sorts of read-write errors today. Finally it froze and upon attempting re-boot it goes through the motion, but ends up showing the old style floppy disk enter animation. I'll get some new batteries tomorrow and hope for the best.

That sounds like a typical harddisk crash. Read/write errors all over the place and then it can't even find the partitions, hence the insert floppy image. Hope you have a backup because this doesn't sound recoverable.

However, just for the sake of it maybe you should check and reseat the controller card (if you use one) and the cables. Could be a stray bad connection appearing. However, I've seen many disks crash and die like this. Hard and abrupt. They usually make some unusual noises when switched on as well.

Nah. I have a login for both Hyperion and the Forum. I was evidently erroneously allowed to register for the X1000 forum without having been "invited". Reading the turgid couple paragraphs in my "First Contact" Notice I take it to imply I can everything BUT posting permission until I get invited.

I'll start another topic since I don't WANT to wait to ask questions. I'm a questiony kind of guy.

Try booting without startup sequence from the early boot menu and then from the shell type s/execute startup-sequence.

I failed to catch it in time and the machine booted up fine this morning.

Well, it booted up fine this morning. I had already made a recent backup, but I went ahead and made another backup just to be current.

I checked all the connections and reseated the cards before turning it on.

My hard drives have been operating very quiet all along. After finishing the backup and a few more minutes of operation it froze again. I did a soft reboot and it was going along fine when a dos window came on saying:
ASSIGN: Can't fine SYS:Classes/.......
Before I could get the above notice memorized it finished booting up.

I am going to get some new batteries today to see if that will help. The current battery is a couple of years old now.

I was told you were just sent your os4 serial number. You register that on the Hyperion web site, then you get invited to the Hyperion support site.

@amigadave

As realize said, I wouldn't use nail polish !! most nail polish contains . butyl acetate or ethyl acetate and traces of toluene and xylene, which doesn't always play nice with plastics you may end up with a melted mess of a front case, go for paint suitable for plastic model kits like klx300r did.

The new battery did not solve the problem, but it is good to have a new battery installed anyway since the old one reported a little above 2v.

Clicking noises started after I installed the new battery and attempted booting. Hard disk crash alright, but it turned out to be my back-up drive which was the oldest drive.

I had a couple of extra drives here so I am up and running once more. Thanks.

@X1000 Owners

Put aside my hard drive crash mentioned above, are we going to have the same strange quirks on the X1000 that we have to put up with on the XE ?

@Moxee

Which strange quirks are you speaking about? Can you describe them? Are they repeatible or completely random?
Also remember that as a First Contact owner your are running a version of the AmigaOS 4 for A1X1000 that is still not completely finalized (which explains why some of the X1000 features are not yet supported in the this First Contact edition). This set aside as a beta tester I didn't experience any "strange quirk" at all since I've received my system.

You might get more support on the Hyperion forums for any problem you might have.

@abalaban

I don't have an X1000 yet.

Since this is getting Off Topic I started my own thread here.
