@Hammer

The were dozens of micros produced (particularly) in the UK that used their own weird and wonderful version of basic.

@Rob
Impressive spot on the church location.

@TonyW

Yes the Church and surrounding area is very historic!

Ah, thanks! Haven't been to Hughenden, but a lot of my wife's family came from Bucks. Next time we visit High Wycombe, we'll have to toddle on down to Hughenden as well.

@thread

Nice blog.

PPC cpu does not make Amiga systems special - its that its fun to use, ie it 'just works'.

future processors need power : greater than 2 DMIPS/MHZ (intel is at 45).

If you dont have the DMIPS you need a media processor too- for HD encode / decode / bluray.

once hardware is in place get price to around 200 euro (inclusive vat) +PP.

Next we need a RAD eq of Visual Studio for C/C++ and Basic.

next have an open source video format we can excel at eg Theora - video/ogg, MKV
Most browsers support hardware accelerated Theora

http://www.theora.org
http://people.xiph.org/~j/bzr/theora-fpga/doc/leon3_integration/

last Improve AmigaOS as InformationOS, improve DOS for internet access eg

INT: google /search AmigaOS >File1 as txt, > File2 as html

INT: query price USD

INT: query alert mybirthday 2012 /query date of passover 2013

nice blog, but why you closed the comments?
it seems you want to have the last word on this subject.

@kamelit0

The book is called "Digital Retro" by Gordon Laing (Publisher ILEX)

It lists almost 50 Micros & Games Systems from 1975 -88.

@asymetrix

"future processors need power : greater than 2 DMIPS/MHZ (intel is at 45)."

45DMIPS means nothing if you use just one core by the OS or SW.

i7 delivers about 8 DMIPS/Mhz/core
iAtom delivers 2.4
PA6T delivers 2.2
P5020 delivers 3
latest ARM seems to have reached now 3 (most ARMs deliver about 2 or less)
T4240 delivers 6

New multicore PPCs with hyperthreading deliver enough MIPS once we get multicore support in the OS.

but anyway. We need for example 4000DMIPS on a few hundred eur motherboards + SW + great user experience, that would be my basic receipt for growth.

If it is anything remotely pertaining to an X2000 of any incarnation you can guarantee I'll be close to first in line!

Nice read Trevor and nice photo to boot!

@ddni

Did not find any.

You got me.

About A1X2000 ...
We need the (S)MP first.
Then there is no limits in practice, 10x speed increase would be available with latest PPC chips.
Then OpenCL.

I wonder if there are xmos & varisys guys playing with Amiga stuff, beyond the contract work.

Just read about the new AMD Trinity APU with the new piledriver core .... so much goodness at a budget price.

I really don't get this fascination from folks here regarding the PowerPC ... that ship has sailed or sunk a long time ago when Apple gave up on IBM developed G5 after Motorola screwed the pooch and wisely went to Intel for their future desktop needs.

What gives ???.

@tibby.dude

Without the supporting SW we would not be able to use any of that goodness.
Not read into Trinity, but isn't the same (+more) available also via modern CPU and modern GPU?

I do not remember all the details why not x86. Most likely piracy has been one threat. And endianess difference another... And if we would go to AMD64/x86, what motherboard to support and would we have the needed documentation?? I doubt AMD would release any docs to our niche, as it seems they have not done so before either, wpuold we then be able to use the goodness ever?
And custom motherboard around x86 would not be cheaper than a PPC alternative.

IMHO, RISC is more modern than CISC and big endian is nicer than little endian. Also, so far, PPC has been suitable for wider range of devices than x86.
But for me, I would be interested in AOS even if it ran only on x86.

If we manage to get (S)MP and OpenCL working, perhaps it then would be worth to go x86 (unless something special has appeared on PPC)??

my old x86 thread attempt: yet another AOS x86 thread start.

Frankly, I do wish AmigaOS 4.x (my favorite variant in our little world) could run on cheap and powerful x86 hardware, and if it did I'm certain Hyperion would sell more copies than they do now even if some pirated copies made the rounds.

But, given how slow development is in this same little world, it would take years and years and a whole lot of money to make that happen. We lack both manpower and money even where we have the will.

As expensive as the X1000 is, I've decided it'll be easier and a whole lot more exciting to spend those hard-earned bucks now and enjoy what I get rather than wait years for what may never come.

@KimmoK

Last time I checked their CPU and Southbridge chips are fairly well documented on their developer site ... the details of the new Fusion Controller Hubs and post R600 Radeon GPU would be under NDA afaik.

AMD does not really are what you plan to use the their chips for (unless you from North Korea) as long as you buy them :).

@tibby.dude

I think those docs would need to be checked by Hans De Ruiter or some one else who does RAdeon driver development.

If there is any usable document for a driver developer, then I'm mistaken / live in the past with my GPU documentation info.

@KimmoK

AMD's Alex Deucher has today announced the availability of the documentation covering the R600 Family Instruction Set Architecture. This ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) documentation covers the unified shader block found on the Radeon HD 2000/3000 series and newer. This PDF document is 342 pages long and does go into detail surrounding R600 vertex and geometry shaders.

While this document is new to open-source graphics driver programmers, it isn't fresh and written by the Bridgman-Deucher duo. This documentation was originally designed for GPGPU programmers and had originally shipped with the CAL (Compute Abstraction Layer) SDK (for more information on that topic, read AMD Releases Stream SDK For Linux and AMD Talks About Stream SDK On Linux).

If you're a developer and interested in some good documentation reading, head on over to the R600 ISA PDF.
