| Seems like Trevor got himself a new blog, and I especially like the last bit about new exciting PPC cpu's which are fully desktop capable.
http://blog.a-eon.biz/blog/
Does anyone here know anything about these cpu's "in development" ??
Oh and Trevor you're totally right, it's awesome that AmigaOS is running on new PPC hardware. Makes it special, which it needs more than raw power.

Its nice to see A-EON blog too
Freescale develops its CPUs, as well as IBM, and AMCC.
To be honest, those claiming PPC is dead as hardware are duchebags, real problem is lack of productivity software and developers.

The ppc isa has found a niche in embedded applications which translates in a highly specialized product for those markets. It also means that general availability is limited and there is little reuse of the designs.
To your point we all want to see the amiga be more successful by having more users, both dev and non-dev. Clearly the existing hardware for our platform is not attractive enough to draw an serious attention from out side the community and those who are on the edge.
Put another way, i know three people who would buy a ppc amiga right now if the value was better. Of course a major component of value is price and the other is capabilities. So we can have expensive hardware with interesting and leading capabilities or we need less expensive hardware.
When I hear someone say that "ppc is dead" i think they mean what i stated above.

"Does anyone here know anything about these cpu's "in development" ??"
I'm almost 100% sure that it's about Freescale T1, T2 and T5 (perhaps also T3) models of new Qorlq AMP chips. I bet T5 is the chip they mean that is the desktop chip. (T5 is still planned to reach 2.4Ghz, unless I'm mistaken and I really hope at least T1 will have GPU built in) _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // "priest" is just the RED goaul in me // The multicolor AmigaFUTURE IS NOW !! |

If Apple make the jump from Intel to Arm for their low end laptops things will get interesting .The lesson being that no CPU family is sacred and immune from the transition knife at a company as ruthless about change as Apple. _________________ Sam440ep-Flex 800Mhz ,1GB.Radeon HD6670 lowprofile via PCI to PCIe Adaper. PPC Boards offer very good Linux usability ,so to succeed maybe each board should ship with Linux, OO and Iceweasel preinstalled.
It`s sad circle: hardware would be cheaper if market was bigger (=buying directly from producers) and market will not grow if it`s not a cheap product.
Introduction of e.g. cheap net top and lower price of SAM 733 as entry boards could help a little. More Amigas for Asia, Africa, Brasil ...
To me its not a problem with hardware quality as it is proven to last quite long and is reliable. Problem is what to do once you get a PPC computer. If there wasn`t a PPC linux that would be quite a problem.
The major problem isn`t to get people interested in OS4. Those who want it will save for the hardware. Problem is that you can mostly do less and not even or more then with Linux or Windows, so the simple question of "what can you do that you can`t with ..." usualy revolves to "you can do everyday tasks but no pro software and way of doing it and feeling is simpler, more user controlled and with responsive OS"_________________ AF 2012, Hollywood Designer 5, AmigaOS 3.5,4.0 and 4.1 registered user, user of Linux Mint 13 Roots Taking Over The World |

| I made a similar comment recently about the 80's computers, I miss the choice who existed back then, it was an awesome time. I'm glad I lived it, I do not have an OS4 capable machine yet but I hope that I'll do as soon as you release the laptop (please no slow proc). What is the name of that book.? Sam440 = 500 € Raspberry Pi = 30 €
There's no such thing as en entry PPC board. The Pi just lowered the entry bar to a ridiculously low level. Closest Amiga offering for Africa would be Aros running on that thing.

Amiga hardware manufacturers should probably study the Raspberry Pi Foundation then. How did they do it?

A) They're using a low end processor.
B) They are a charity, they are not making any profit.
That said, the level of interest wont have gone unnoticed. I expect other similar machines to come in at the low end of the market. If you can make the volumes putting in a better processor and doing a small case wont be difficult and put the price up much - You can already get tablets for £70.

On the subject of Trevors blog...
The trouble with todays home PC market is that most people using a computer (of whatever kind) only use them for the really boring stuff like "social networking", "downloading movies/ music or games (usually pirated)" or just "shopping online etc...
Now I'm not talking about most folk who hang around these forums on a regular basis (the geeks, myself included) who still like to figure out how things work and poke around to get the absolute best out of our systems...
Nah, it seems your average computer user these days doesn't really care about what processor their machine has, nor are they interested in doing much with their computers other than the stuff I mentioned above and if it doesn't work straight out the box they're too lazy to figure it out or haven't a clue what to do with the thing...
This is a shame, as to me I can never understand why some people spend so much money on constantly buying the latest PC to keep up with the Joneses and all just listen to music or watch movies which most folk will already have in their household a much better device to do these tasks like a DVD player or MP3 Player...
Don't think we'll ever see the likes again of the 80's when there was real choice for home computers and getting the things to work properly in the first place was all part of the enjoyment of it and actually being kind of forced (which was a good thing) into learning more about the machine you were using and educating yourself along the way...
Whether it's PPC or X86 or whatever the vast majority of the market doesn't care and most probably don't even have a clue about which processor their computer uses...
Maybe it's best not to even tell them when trying to sell them a new computer and just let them buy it and discover for themselves later on they have in fact been getting all that enjoyment (even the mundane & boring stuff I mentioned at the start) from a processor that a lot of folk considered to be dead... _________________

They used extremely cheap parts and provided the bare minimum of subsystems. Producing batches of 10,000 boards at a time also helps a little. |

Most 8bit micro-computers has Microsoft Basic as it's user interface i.e. Microsoft was already dominant. MS-DOS extended this dominant position during 16bit era. For 32bit/64bit era, it's MS Windows NT.
"Microsoft's and other variants of BASIC constituted a significant and visible part of the user interface of many home computers' rudimentary operating systems" In Japan, MSX (Sony/Yamaha/Panasonic/Toshiba) standard runs with Microsoft Basic.
The actual sucessor for Microsoft Basic enabled Commodore PET/64/128/'etc' is actually a Microsoft Windows based PC.Last edited by Hammer on 15-May-2012 at 01:40 AM.
