I have no idea how it all works but don't there need to be some kind of agreement in place in order for this card to be supported.

Its all very well to see new PPC card,but if their turn round and say we won't support it what then.

For sure most classic amiga users will welcome it including myself. Good luck with this awesome project.

P1013 and P1022 are based on e500v2 core.

"addition of double precision floating point support. this is not compatible with any other PowerPC floating point unit, and in fact the instruction set overlaps with string and altivec instructions as well."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerPC_e500

neither single precision is compatible: "e500v1 core based cpus. They use the SPE unit for single precision floating point operation. This is not compatible with
the "classic" floating unit in other powerpc like the 603. You may use
the kernel emulation to work around the problem but they remain a few
opcodes which trigger an invalid opcode."

Sounds like a similar situation like 68k vs coldfire..

Just to confirm, would this CPU be tricky to port to OS4, or is it simply mission impossible?

@Akiko

From what I read it seems you would need to have some form of sofware to assis the FPU (missing instructions emulated or done by the SPE etc.). It would reduce the performance etc.

@KimmoK

Is the FPU used by AMCC compatible with classic PPC? The 440 and 464 cores don't have FPU, and it's sort of hard to find any info from AMCC on it (I'm logged into MyAPM, but still only get vague statements regarding FPU).

Yeah, as if they are going release OS3.9 for this. It has the wrong CPU for a start. Haage & Partner are an x86 company. When they were last destroying the Amiga scene.

It's funny what you were talking about in this thread and then we find some guys were already onto it in the guise of the UltimatePPC.

@olegil

The clarification that I found so far:
"the PPC440EP implements the defined floating point instruction set
of the Book-E Enhanced PowerPC Architecture, with the exception the fctid, fsqrt, and fsqrts instruction." -PPC440ep user manual

Summary of how that Book-E is implemented in different PPCs would be nice to see.

( I think I lost interest in e500..e500v2 cores, started to read more about MPC6810 ...
I'm not good in digging out chip prices. How much does MPC6810 and P2041 (e500mc core) cost? )

@KimmoK

Eh, "not cheap"?

Note, these are single unit numbers, base price at 1000 units is easily available from Freescale.

MPC8610: http://components.arrow.com/part/detail/46898347S8791165N3691

P2041 doesn't seem to physically exist anywhere. Even Freescale lists it (and the 2040) as "No longer manufactured". That is VERY strange.

The P1013@1200MHz starts well below half of the 1066MHz 8610:
http://components.arrow.com/part/detail/51543740S40084N3691

Above that I find NOTHING until I reach the P4040:
http://components.arrow.com/part/link/na/en/P4040NSE1MMB/Freescale

That's a quad core 1200MHz at 34% more than the single core 1066MHz MPC8610. Price per MHz is only 19% higher, and that's with 3 extra cores.

Of course, then you're into the realm of GPUs if you want any GUI

Yeah. I actually only posted it to see what the reaction would be. I haven't any coding skills, so I wouldn't have a clue, really. A bit MooBunny-ish, I suppose.

It's a shame this UltimatePPC doesn't seem to have a way to connect to an A1200, though.....

@All

I'm hopping to see what Hyperion has to say about it, first they are interested, second if e500v1/e500v2 cpu cores can be used for AmigaOS or not, (anyway e500mc should work.)

Will the ultimateppc be redesigned for a different CPU or not, if Hyperion can't use that CPU for AmigaOS4.x?

I think 405LP used in mystery device has no FPU, so it is possible.

Well, you can always implement missing opcodes by catching interrupts, it's just that you take a performance penalty doing so. e500mc is obvisouly a better choice, even if that means a bunch of unused cores

@OlafS25

For whatever reasons they hijacked the OS3.9 source code so AmigaOS couldn't be developed anymore. Not even by themselves. And also managed to secure an AmigaOS emulator which they also managed to hijacked so that could not be developeed any futher either. I didn't see them improve it either or make another release with QNX based emulator.

@Hypex

Destroying the “Amiga scene“, AmigaXL and Amitalon did take AmigaOS in wrong direction as I see it, but to say that Hagge&Partner was destroying the “Amiga scene” that's big words, Hyperion did not get all of source code but they did get a lot of it.

As far as what I read about that they did not "hijack" the code because it was their own. They did 3.5. and 3.9. update for AmigaInc. so they kept what they added after 3.1. because of money they did not get for it. (What I read). So destroying the platform seems to me overdone.

@OlafS25 & NutsAboutAmiga

Okay my words were a bit strong there. But this was all part of the politics that stalled development of the Amiga. I don't know why all these guys chose the Amiga to pick on with all the personal issues they brought on eachother. It was already loosing it. I suppose it goes back to Miami and back to Commodore where they didn't put the proper reasurces into the machine. And then the investors who somehow weren't interested in making money from could have been the best machine ever to take over the computer world. Didn't they see that? Guess wnen you think you are superior you don't take advice from others.
