"Although OS4 can be downloaded free of charge, Dohnert does request an optional $20 donation ($12 for students) to help towards development and running costs."

Since when is os4 free?.

OS4 is a Linux dist. Not to be confused with Amiga OS 4. Read the blog again.

Really like Trevor's approach, it is exactly what I was mentioning in one of my previous posts about brand / communication / storytelling, something Hyperion is definitely lacking IMHO.

Re: the RadeonHD driver Update

Since you have Hans working too hard to respond :

I have come across 3 cards that wont work without some special configuration
using the 0.49 driver .

a 6570, a 6750 and a 6770.

There seems to be some issues with the card setting the Workbench prefs screenmode resolution. the 6770 will only display up 1024x768 then 1440x900 using the VGA output.
Have not been able to test DVI or HDMI as the connectors are blocked in my setup.

The computer will not boot with 6570 unless the monitor is connect via DVI to VGA adapter .This one has HDMI and DVI outputs.

These are the only 3 cards out of 8 that I have tried that do not work as expected.

Fun things to look forward to. Putting a pair of £30 HD5450s in the 2 x16 slots, could spend more and get x1 to x16 converters, then poking the OpenCL code from AREXX scripts into the onboard memory, while setting up the DVI for intra, or even better, inter computer comunication.

If HDMI is rated to 10Gb, isnt that equivalent to the sadly unused 10GE ports on the PA SoC?

@Spectre660

I am using the latest beta version of the Radeon HD driver which is version 0.53.

Registered users will be available to download this version in the near future. There will be an announcement on the A-EON website when it is available for download.

Welcome info.
I hope that version 0.53 solves my issues.

Have you had a chance to try the Radeon HD Driver with a PCI to PCIE adapter on your Sam-flex yet ?
Once you do you will not want to go back to the radeon 9250 .

Ah.. thanks to links posted here giving me search terms to use, I found this beasty.

http://www.magma.com/expressbox-16-basic

These guys are only talking about using it as an 80Gb/s IO box.

Im looking at it as a 16 GPU Supercomputer cluster, 1 PCIe lane per GPU because the GPUs then move data between each other via the backport cables.

Should Amigas really be classed as Central Controller Units, instead of Central Processing Units, making it sound as though the CPU is directing the operation and behaviour of the system instea of actually having to handle heavy grunt work, only occasionally?

Or, the CPU in an Amiga works like the technicians terminal in a server farm? It doesnt do the data handling, but it can control what happens, and can handle an amount itself if required.?

@RodTerl

"sadly unused 10GE ports on the PA SoC?"

To my understanding, there is no unused 10G "ports". It (the serdes line) is just configured to do something else on x1000. 10GE would have required a use of one serdes line, so one PCIx1 slot less on the motherboard. There is 24 serdes lines on PA6T, I'm sure none of them is unused, most of them (16 lines) go to GPU, one or two go to SB600, etc...

Hey man, I am writing it here, since this thread is somewhat dedicated to you: Your section on AF is simply put, awesome! I love your narration and I am always amazed by the depth of historical research you put in every issue. Also to tell the truth your English look more "native" than rest of every issue. Tell me, where do you find all this stuff? For sure it can't be only online research or title scanning of old Amiga magazines! Anyway, if it's possible shed some light to gaming companies as well. Just a suggestion of course but in any case you are the reason i read AF backwards :)

Very nice indeed.
I hope that Hyperion will implement some form of openCL support in OS 4.2 at some stage .

Wow! Trevor posts new blog entries faster than a cat on ice skates! Its been perhaps a week since I looked at his blog, and there is now more to look at!
Keep it going Trevor! Good work!

Oh, and please tell us which of the graphics cards you tested sound like jet engines starting up!

Thanks for the kind works about my Classic Reflections series in "Amiga Future" magazine.

Reseach takes about 7-10 days and consists of Web crawling, searching through old Amiga magazines (Amiga Format and Amiga World mainly), and my own Classic Amiga hardware and software collection and various books etc. I also try to find out a little about the background and history of the characters involved - this usually takes the most time. I also try to find some interesting stories (if possible) rather that just regurgitate the facts. As for the English, I suppose that is because I am English and most of the other articles have been translated from the original German.

BTW - the next edition is about NewTek & the Video Toaster

With regards to graphics cards - I've noticed that some high powered cards start-up with the fan at maximum speed, then after a few seconds slow down to normal operating speed - the HD4890 for example. This seems to be a phenomenon of some of the high performance gfx cards. When I searched the web I found quite a few references to fans spinning up to 100% when the gfx card was idle.

e.g. Fans speed noise

Here is another report on experimenting with gfx card fan speeds.

RadeonHD fan speed/noise
