| Hi All,
Can't believe I lost track of my favorite company for a while there.. Last I saw their website it had posted a message saying "Goodbye and thanks." Apparently they are back and have new software in the works. They have even released Defender of the Crown for the iPhone.
http://www.cinemaware.com/
Great new trailer here with some really positive comments about Amigas...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fWp_3V9RaQ
Can't wait to see what they have in store...
(Doubtful that anything will be released for AmigaOS, but ya never know...)

Wow! Cinemaware is back! And unlike Electronic Arts, they are not ashamed of the Amiga but rather proud of what they were able to do with it!
Great video!

| Not completely relevant, but Ive been re-playing Sinbad And The Throne Of The Falcon quite a bit lately. Great under-rated Cinemaware game in my opinion, and as I mentioned to a friend the other day, pretty much the game that made me *need* an Amiga when I was a kid.
It's a shame that Cinemaware had moved on by the time AGA was around. Despite being nicely presented and having nice graphics, they were mostly quite simplistic (sub)games that wouldve lended themselves well to a nice spruce up on something like the cd32.

| Defender of the Crown on C64 and later Wings and "It Came from the Desert" on Amiga were great. Still have my boxes around here somewhere. Simple games really, but they had that "feel" to them.

I wonder if Cinemaware has any chance to raise another $348,000 in only 30 more days?
Seems like an unrealistic goal to reach in so short a time period, but who knows, maybe there were enough old Cinemaware users from the good old days that have a bunch of disposable income to donate large chunks to this project. _________________ What are you doing to make the Amiga community a better place? |

And there is probably not use donating a free Sam460, because do not have any updated 3d drivers, and requirement of game will probably a lot higher then hardware we have.
But never mind that how many AmigaOS4 users are willing to pay for a game for AmigaOS4? 10%, 20%, 30%?

| You guys miss the point. Todays Cinemaware have nothing to do with company we used to love and played their games. Yes they have rights to brand, games etc and they are trying to use the old Amiga fame, but thats all.

From what's being said on Amiga.org I doubt very much that even those of us us old enough to remember Cinemaware first time round will be parting with any cash to support their Wings Kickstarter project...
I've gotta agree with what's being said by most on Amiga.org, that it's a bit of a cheek for Cinemaware to ask Amiga users to contribute towards a Mac/PC game when they have no desire to make anything for the Amiga...
I'm pretty sure those interested in PC's & Macs would have found out about their project without them coming to Amiga sites to ask for money to NOT create something for the Amiga...
I've no idea why some companies seem to think that because they supported the Amiga at one point in time that we somehow owe them a living, good luck to them but please Cinemaware unless your going to actually contribute something Amigawise then please keep your begging posts to the appropriate sites... _________________

For those who feel Cinemaware should port to the Amiga... my question would be, why?
Keep in mind companies have a goal of making some money. The entire user base for AOS4 + MorphOS + AROS isn't going to really be enough to support commercial software, even small-scale commercial software. I recall reading the numbers for MorphOS a while ago, for instance, and was sort of shocked at how small it was. Something like 1000-1500 registered users? For an OS, those numbers are awful. I don't want to sound demeaning, but it's almost like, what's the point?
Yeah, from a hobby standpoint it's fine. But the days of any Amiga platform being able to support commercial types of software are long gone.
Cinemaware most likely realizes that almost all former Cinemaware customers have moved onto other platforms by now. Even if they did want to port, what do they port to? The 500-1000 (maybe) users of AOS4? And hope to sell perhaps 100 copies?
The thing I find peculiar though is that I could have sworn I read cinemaware ports were being made for the blackberry playbook first -- or I should say, most likely emulated versions. I'm sort of confused as to what is being released for what platform, and what is emulated and what is a port.
And didn't ClickBoom (or some company like that) have almost finished versions of updated cinemaware games, ages and ages ago (during Cinemaware's first revival)? But there were some legal reasons, or lawsuit, or something before they were released. And then the 2nd Cinemaware went out of business when they put all of their eggs into a console Defender of the Crown, some so-so GameBoy ports, and PC ports of Defender and Stooges.

They can have realized what they want. Franko is right there. It reminds me a little of this company that licensed the "Amiga" trademark and thought all would jump around the room (we did but not because of joy ). They have bought "Cinemaware" and the rights of the old titles. That is fine but can I run it on my favorite system. No and I will not (after what they announced. They want earn money on the "retro-wave" and they can do. But for me (and most others) it is not interesting. When I donate money then I donate for a amiga-deicated project. |

I wouldn't put them into the same category as CUSA.
One difference, for starters, is remember Cinemaware never made games for the Amiga exclusively. And by the time Wings came along, they were moving closer to PC releases anyway.
It'd be like expecting an old NES game company to port their games to the NES now. Or expecting an Apple II game to be updated and still run on the Apple II (exaggerations, I know). There simply isn't enough of an installed user base to make it profitable.
If someone here can come up with a plan where it makes them money, I'd expect they'd listen to it. But without a larger user base, I don't see how it's possible. Last edited by Nameless on 11-Aug-2012 at 07:11 PM.
