In case anyone wants to install TV Paint on OS4, here is a reminder of the installation script that I wrote for it:

Is pixel painting relevant today out of our niche?

Useful, without doubt. Relevant, I don´t think so.

I mostly use PPaint to change image quality/format for my other computers (ST, A1200, B/W notebook). It is also nice tool for simple drawing (eg. my maps for Abandoned Places and other dungeons).

@pavlor

Do you mean you're the developper of Abandoned Places 1+2 ? If yes, are you planning to make/port a OS4 version ? What programming language do you use ? I like dungeon games (like earlier on Nes Sword and Serpents or dungeon master).

No. Games like Abandoned Places are even more enjoyable with good maps (else you will be lost in the dungeon...).

Abandoned Places 1 and 2 work good in E-UAE. I don´t think native version is needed.

However, I used DPaint to gain proper sprite palettes for Ishar II replacement project of my brother.

I think the abundance of retro themed indie games on the smartphone stores suggests they are.

I my-self am working on an app and would kill for modern pixel painter. A D-Paint style interface feels more immediate and natural than Photoshop like interfaces. I'm currently using Cosmigo's Pro-Motion for win32, It's good but is ageing badly and is missing things like Layers, True Colour modes and would like to see the painting modes extended.

The are times I'm tempted to take it on myself but I've already got too many unfinished projects.

Is that legal? Redistributing the freeware software archive they provide is one thing, but modifying it yourself & then redistributing it is something else...

I would have done something similar (rather than trying to automate the unpacking process with a script) if I had thought it was legal to do so.

@ChrisH

I can't see what so illegal with having it that way rather than have it in image files really.
They released the program for free, why should the bother if someone prepare it in a better way really?

I've sent a question to the TVPaint developers now so they can add the proper archive rather than the messy image-chunk instead.

@Develin

I agree. It can't be that serious. It's not the software that has changed it's just the
way it's packaged. Is there a read-me that specifically forbids repackaging ?

@Manu

The included copyright information is based on the original distribution way and not the archived one so I cannot see that as a legal bound to the way it's packed if it's in a better way.

Good (and logical) news!

I've now got a reply by the TVPaint support and they do not have any objections of having the archive in the "proper" way.

@invent

Really nice concept.

Would it be that hard to do?

is Grafx2 open source? I mean if it is then its just a matter of making a new GUI and a few little adjustments for the program to look and work like this, it be super cool.

I didn't use Deluxe Paint much, Personal Paint came with my amiga and many magazine covers so that was my main program. it kinda of works on OS4 if a bit temperamental so an update to either of these programs would be very welcome.

No modern paint program beats the power and simplicity of Deluxe Paint. If they updated it for OS4 I would buy it.

Your Wrong. Brilliance 2.0 demolished Deluxe Paint.

Saying Deluxe Paint was the best is like saying Workbench 1.3 was awesome, having never used Workbench 2.0 or 3.1.

Really... Its that much of a difference. Now Brilliance for sure, there is nothing that comes close on any platform in the user interface specifically. I currently use Linux Mint 9 and a Macbook Pro for several years....... Nowhere near as satisfying as an Amiga.....I actually want to go back badly. And Highly interesting is that I have yet not found anything that matches SCALA MM 400's interface and ease of use.... Not even Keymote on the Mac. Scala inc does produce Scala for Windows, butnits gotten massively complicated and its not competing with PowerPoint or Keynote... Which is a really reqlly dumb move. They should make Scala for iPad and Mac and Linux. Wow...I can dream.

There is also SketchBlock which is currently in development.
Not sure if it is any good for actual pixel art though.

(I remember it being picky already on real 68k HW)

@scala47

Actually Brilliance was superb fast and miles ahead of DPaint. But you cannot say the same for Brilliance 2.0 unfortunately. The first one was even better.

@Dickie

Welcome Dickie, great that your first post here is to promote SketchBlock

I think you should be able to do "pixel art" on it. It's bias is for digital painting, 1.7 has a heap of new stuff, including animbrushes (sequential , random and directional) convolution, smooth tool (as distinct from the exitsing smudge tool) and quite a few more.

@ Thread.

What is the defnition of 'pixel art' or 'pixel painting' as oppsed to any other form of raster based digital painting?
