@ddni

A couple of questions...

1) How did you install DPaint 5.2 on your X1000?

2) Are you certain it is 5.2....is this what is shown when you select the icon and press right-amiga I and pres the version button? Is the file size 605352? Have you set the stack size to 200000 in the icon info? Do you have an icon tooltype set for DisplayModeID - it should be commented out with ().

3) Sure, lets see the crash log. I'm very curious since 5.2 works so well on my machine. I am wondering if you have your GUI prefs settings such as Retargetable Graphics set the same as mine.

Lets see if we can get your Dpaint 5.2 working!

Scott

@ChrisH

Quote:
What happens if you run DPaint 5, and with it still running, go back to the Workbench (LAmiga-N), then to the Prefs/Screens, and then click on "Insert open screen...". Can you see DPaint's screens in the list? If so, then you can tell OS4 to modify the screen's settings

I run Dpaint 5.2, use Amiga-N to go to workbench, and open prefs/screens. The "insert open screen" button is not available - it is not selectable. How exactly is Dpaint opening screens - is it going around Intuition somehow?

Perhaps this guy may know a thing or two about DPaint.

@scabit

Hi Scott, apologies I missed your reply.

I checked my install and it appears to match yours.
I installed it direct on my X1000 using adf images via diskimagegui.

Wow, I bet! I am considering even how to approach him with these trivial questions...such as "Hey, you don't happen to have source code laying around I could look at do you?". Or "do you mind if I ask you hundreds of questions about Deluxe Paint 5.2, you know, from decades ago?"
No, Electronic Arts is very hostile to releasing any of their software or source code (see the notes on some of the Amiga s/w download sites),
I would never ask for source code to recompile and actually use...but boy it sure would make it nice to learn how this program works...wouldn't it?

Okay, it looks like you have the exact same binary file. Good.
Now, try this:

Go to Prefs/GUI. Select the controls tab.

I have the following boxes checked under miscellaneous: avoid flicker, screen menu snap, Text Gadget Filter, Drag Window with contents, Planar Screens on RTG.

Under the effects tab, I DO NOT have compositing enabled.

Could you please set these items the same and save your GUI prefs, then try running Dpaint 5.2?

Also, do you haveany 640 x 480 P96 screen modes in the requester when you bring up Dpaint? Try some of those please and let me know what you see...

Hi, the only difference in gui settings for me was mode promotion. I disabled this and compositing.

Running dpaint with a fakep96 mode results in the same behaviour.

Interesting. Perhaps you can try uncommenting (removing the parens) from the dpaintV icon tooltype WORKBENCH. Perhaps the action of trying to shut down workbench is causing a problem...unlikely but you never know.
Oh, you do have a DPaintV assign added to your user-startup i.e.

Assign DPaintV: "OS4:Utilities/DPaintV" defer

Also, after you get the DSI, you said you get an ISI or program error? Can you capture that one for me as well? It might provide more information.

Scott

Okay, I just confirmed that if the tooltype DisplayModeId = 0x50021000 is set to a mode that is not something DPaint can comprehend it will give a DSI error. It must use either old P96 modes or something like 640x480 256 color modes to run.

@scabit

I have the assigns set in user-startup.
Tried removing the parenthesis from workbench.
The error remains unchanged.

I tested the dpaint install with RuninUAE and it functions normally.

Not sure which error info you need, but here is a screen grab of GR

I notice from your earlier crash log that the stack trace shows dpcpublit.library as being the last thing that was opened before the crash.
Can you verify that you do NOt have a dpcpublit.library or dpblit.library in your sys:libs directory and that you DO have these two library files in your DPaintV:libs directory?
Also, they are as follows: dpblit.library 3408 bytes - version 1.0
dpcpublit.library 8984 bytes - version 1.0

Our tooltypes are now identical for DPaintV.

Do you happen to be using Wazp3D in your libs: directory? I don't. I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it, but it seems like there must be some sort of graphics display difference between our two machines - other than the obvious fact that your Radeon graphics hardware is different than mine on my micro A1.

Hi none of those libs in sys:libs BOTH of them in dpaint/libs
No wazp3d drivers installed. I have a dual graphics card setup, 4850 and 9250 (for warp3d stuff). I am stumped.

Have any X1000 owners had success?

Your crash log is useless. It crashes at an RTS. You need to diable JIT and try again. Also, everything after "System information" is not really needed.

That RTS is the end of a JIT block, And doesn't show where it really crashed. An expert told me.

Tomppeli says he has it working on his X1000 - although he has a demo version of Dpaint5. Whereas MBrantley cannot get it to work on his X1000.
Interesting.
So, you have Picasso96 drivers installed and running. Can you choose the screen mode that corresponds to ModeId 21000 and see if it works?
The problem seems to be the screen mode or how it is being interpreted. When I use radeon screen modes I too get DSI errors, which is interesting because I really thought it worked originally when I used the standard radeon 640x480x256 mode.
Are you running modepro or anything else to promote screens? I am not. If you had tried running DPaint5 with modepro and had initially selected a screen that didn't work, mode pro might be automatically promoting your screen to that non working mode based on screen name or program name - causing this failure no matter which screen you choose from the Dpaint5 requester.
Hmmm...what else could it be????

Sorry I've been absent -- work has become super busy and the hours long. I'll note quickly that I can run the program, but the lockups come when I attempt to actually complete a project with it, such as doing an animation. I've used various of the "Fakenative" modes and am not using any mode promotion utility with it.

So I have not found DPaint to be useful for me on my Sam440 or X1000 to date. Would love to have it working to the point where I can use it, however.

Hi, never used modepro.
I have disabled JIT (added dpaint to the blacklist in compatibility)
Selected the screenmode you suggested.

I got an immediate GR on running dpaint

@mbrantley

Hi! Thanks, I value your insights.

Since I do not do animations with Dpaint, my experience is a little different. As just a graphics drawing program, it is really useful in OS4.1. I can load and save images (as long as they don't use a screen mode that blows the program out of the water!) and perform the normal drawing tasks, even arcs and flood fills. It would be much better of course if the TAB color cycle animation worked - that was one of my favorite features with Dpaint.
Yes, one can do most of this stuff with PPaint and other drawing programs that DO work fine with OS4.1....but this has become a sort of challenge...like Vista Pro...you know.
It is very interesting to me to know that some people can run this program on their X1000 while others cannot even get it to start.
I think it would be very educational to all of us to know why that is. Different libraries? Different graphic modes?
Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Scott

It seems to have got stuck at a jump from a jump table claiming the address does not exist. But in the disassembly there is the jump codes! It doesn't make sense!

By the looks of it, it could be a bug in the emulator. Or it has marked the address area where the jump table is incorrectly. IIRC the emulator works by trying to jump into code on the PPC and if it isn't in the execute segment then the 68K emulator takes over. And if it isn't in 68K RAM then it will crash. At leaast I think.

I know there is a limit of about 64MB on fast RAM. I don't know if the 68K area is also inside that, or I just don't remember.

I forgot to say last time but trying to run animations it crashed. I tested quickly the drawing tools and they worked.
