@Arko

There have been different third party workbench replacements for year so there no reason why something more suited to multi touch and small screens couldn't be done.

Another alternative would be to simply have a program launcher that sits on top of workbench that builds in the functionality required. Look at Amiga Media Centre for example.

Yes it could be done. A lot of thing s could be done, the first flights to Mars where planned for 1984 because they could be done.

It will not be done.

@Arko

I really sometimes fail to see why you're here. We have enough doom and gloom without you if that's your concern.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

- buttons are to small

Having used amigaos with a touch screen I agree, but that is trivial to fix, just install a larger image set / theme.

- pull down menus

Not sure why you think menus are an issue (apart from lack of RMB) but AmigaOS 4 has popup menus too with popup under the mouse.

Not really, the 'cursor' is your finger, you know where it is so don;t need a cursor in the same way.

According to you it is a wonder, why Windows had so much acceptance problems on tablets when it was demoed on a tablet PC 20 years ago.

And according to you Microsoft and Apple designed special desktops for touch screen without any reason.

@Arko

I made no comment on MS or Apple at all.

Only on AmigaOS and my exdperience with it with a touch screen and which bits I felt were a problem.

It seem to me though that apples (an android and probably windows haven't tried that) touch based desktop is an extention of a phone desktop which ad intial limtation due to size.Then people are used to that touch approach so they build on it.

AmigaOS and friends need not take the same route, but somethings would need adjusting for sure, another little thing I found was when clicking (tapping) icons they inevitabley moved slightly which doesn't happen as easily with a mouse.

Clearly there are some additional input methods mostly guesture based, swipe to scroll pinch to zoom etc. which might also be desirable (but some are also patented!)

One thing that worked really well with the touch screen was the smudge tool in SketchBlock!

Yes and this is exactly why your comment was wrong. Before posting something like "The Desktop GUI doesn't need major changes" you should analyse why other desktop OSes failed or why their GUI was heavily changed.

Not long ago I worked as a developer under WindowsXP our application is running on a touch screen display. I have used WindowsXP on a tablet PC and our application has GUI elements of their own because none of the Windows standard GUI object was usable for touch screen.

My experience as developer of an application on a touch screen device told me:

GUI element developed for desktop OSes are not suitable for working on a touch screen device.

@thread

If there is a team working with touch screen enabled Amiga OS variant, please send me PM.
I might have HW for you.

Rigo (Simon Archer), demonstrated AOS 4.0 I believe it was running touch screen at one of the Big Bash events last decade. So I believe this is possible but perhaps had limited interest to be turned into a commercial solution.
