Needs are possible to be fullfilled, but Visual Studio is not realistic.
(one would need to use modernBridgeBoard to use VisualStudio on Amiga, then sure, you cold crosscompile to Amiga)

@C#

Porting mono might be realistic at some point.
+someone could make comparisson with E and C# etc.

(we do not need .net as long as it's so sluggish as it now is ... I've had to put ~500ms delay in every file operation & USB access to avoid deadlocks... argh!)

@KimmoK

Why not a more low-level language like Python? I know Python can be sluggish when not coded well, but it's a very easy-to-learn language which could attract even some current AOS users w/o coding skills to start working on some simple apps.

AFAIK, Python is already supported and implemented in OS4.x, but nobody is using it, well, because there are hardly any developers left.

It can't work like that, though. If they say it's nearly ready, people think it's about to come out... but sometimes the last niggling bugs can take a VERY long time to iron out. It's better to not say how far off release something is at all, than to tell people it's 90% done, but then find that the last 10% takes another year.

I am not talking about an estimate for release. Just individual components/features like for example this feature is currently 60% complete or something like that. Just so that we can see that there is some progress going on. Alot of software/game companies have started doing that.

Thats just silly.

Developers are needed to create and maintain Python, not use it.

It would be like needing developers to use BASIC.

That is true, but more and more are doing it.
But again I want to make it clear that it should not be about release time. Even when everything is finished and done they usually still have things to do like bug testing and so on as well.
But anyways this is just my opinion anyways. Just more updates in general would be a good thing as well.
But I completely agree that no release date should ever be announced unless they are sure.

Sorry, my bad. I meant a Python class for creating GUI's. (either with native AOS4 or MUI) That way, you don't need to learn C to do all of that.

@broadblues

In that case it would be nice if the AmigaOS wiki would mention that, because they only talk about how badly you need to go through the efforts of learning C...

C is the king of programming languages its what Linux, AmigaOS4, and many other operating systems where written in, before the there was C, there was a language called B, and before B there where BCPL, BCPL was the program language AmigaOS1.x and up was written in.

There are options like:

Portable E, Hollywood.
And there are lots of script languages for AmigaOS4 (PHP/Phyton/Pearl/Javascript/Lua).

http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=browse&cat=development/language

So there are options, but the best supported language is whit no doubt C and Amiga E.

And you can write C++ programs if you like, its just a extension of C, whit Classes / Name spaces and References.

BCPL = Berkeley C Programming Language.

@Boot_WB

BCPL = basic combined programming language. and it dates back to the mid-60s. there was a version of it available for later models of S/360.

Thanks for the correction, I've been mis-reading that acronym for years it seems!

Not to mention there's still some BCPL legacy in dos.library, although it's rapidly disappearing.

I think TripOS must have been written in BCPL.

@NutsAboutAmiga

TripOS was written in BCPL, which was shoehorned in to AmigaOS as AmigaDOS. The rest of AmigaOS was written primarily in C & 68k assembler back then.

There's a nice blog article on the two at http://www.pagetable.com/?p=193 that even compares the two manuals

Also, if you download BCPL/TripOS from Martin Richards' page (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mr10/) you can see that many of the commands look very familiar. There's some source code there too.
