@Hyperionmp

Great news !

cannot wait for the technical details :)

PS start a monthly subscription for 5 USD New Amiga Technical Journal Magazine.

Hire small team Commodore Engineers / spare staff to write technical articles.

By your numbers, not doing this looses you $5 a month x 1500 users = $7,500 per month
or

$7,500 x 12 months = $90,000

So a potential 90,000 USD - expenses loss in not doing it. Change loss to a gain.

Hire a developer on Freelancer in PHP, simple PHP subscription system 300 USD.

@Hyperionmp

7k to 10k new users? What a completely unrealistic thing to say. WIth the price of hardware and lack of software how in the earth is that going to happen? Maybe remove a zero from the end?

Also what good is more than 1gb ram on amigoid system with no software to use it?

Thanks for posting while you are here I'd like to ask a simple question. Why don t you bring back Project Moana and focus on software development instead of writing exotic hardware drivers and porting to alien platforms? if you did this then those fantasy numbers may be a reality.

Good job on the UI of the store looks really cool. This is a step in the right direction.

Hmm quite the opposite actually the fanboys are always helping to make excuses and rationalizing deadlines that surpass years past the deliverable date!

I can assure you that on the basis of registration of AmigaOS 4.x copies available to us, the userbase is already in the low thousands.

Our aim is to hike it up to at least around 7000 to 10.000 in the course of the next 3 years.

Wow, that's quite something - I figured that attrition over the years had us about half an order of magnitude less than that, ie high hundreds. Lots of luck, I'm in the sidelines (now that I can afford to buy all the stuff I couldn't before, I don't have the time to play with it...) but I'm rooting or you!

Project "Moana" was a private project undertaken by a single OS4 developer, without the backing or approval of Hyperion, using parts of the OS without asking permission of any of the other authors. It got to the stage of loading and running on a Mac platform, but no more. It did not have any device drivers or any of the other necessities that one needs to "port it to an alien platform".

In other words, to continue the development of a "Moana"-style project would require more work than to get the OS working fully on the X-5000. The X-5000 is not that different from the X-1000 and most of the device drivers will need little or no adjustment.

Considering that the old Macs are as scarce as VW radiator caps, it's not worth the effort. At best we would get a few hundred more users on an obsolete platform.

@Hyperionmp

Isnt it time you renegotiate and get a processor independent licence and Amiga branding licence , maybe even universal licence ?

Low thousands means 1 to 3 thousand, and I can believe that more than 1,000 licenses for AmigaOS4.x have been sold so far. I doubt very much that we still have that many active users, but I have been told before that there are many more lurking users that I am unaware of, so it would not be surprising for me to find out that I am wrong.

I wish I could believe that we still have that many active users, but since all the owners of every Amiga related website and every Amiga related hardware or software company, including Hyperion, maintains their policies of secrecy regarding actual sales numbers and active member numbers, I will continue to find it hard to believe that we have thousands of active users.

My definition of an active user is someone who turns on and uses their AmigaOS4.x system at least once every month, and hopefully much more often than that.

I hope that your vision for increasing the user base to several thousand people is successful, but can you explain your plans for bringing back that many users?

To get that many users to come back, I would think that AmigaOS4.x would have to provide developer tools and OS functions at least on par with Linux, and the amount of quality software applications would have to be at least ten to twenty times what it is today (which is why I am so supportive and excited about A-Eon's and AmigaKit's initiatives to promote software development).

I don't want to sound pessimistic, I am just trying to be realistic. Again, good luck with all of your work and plans.

There are NO restrictions anymore since a long time in terms of CPU used.

@amigadave

I'm sorry to say this but you are simply not up to speed with the latest developments from Hyperion, A-EON, A-Cube etc.

On the basis of people who actually bothered to register their copy of AmigaOS 4.1 (which already a sign of "activity" as we see more sales than we see registrations), current active userbase (including AmigaOS 4.1 for Classic) stands at around 2500.

All depends on what you consider active users.

A user who is downloading updates via AmiUpdate is one definition but that is hardcore active users who wishes to stay at the very latest version.

I don't have numbers for that handy.

Nice, so potential users should wait until something suitable will be supported.

There is plenty of hardware underway high-end, middle end and low-end. Details are not for us to reveal.

I would just advise you to read up on "OpenPower" on e.g. www.theregister.co.uk

Power8 in new AmigaOne? That would be powerful (and expensive ).

There was always plenty of hardware to chose for a port, but after your announced the possibility of an architecture change, there could be much more than before.

This means, you don't have any details to reveal or there is still a mighty and dark entity that will punish you cruelly if you do.

Some contracts (and their negotiations) are secret until final release by both parties. Of course, that doesn´t mean there is some similar contract (or negotiation) for Power based AmigaOne.
