There's no SM502 so no onboard audio or video. I can't see if the FPGA is still there but they've removed the I/O so I'd hazard a guess that it's absent too. Most of the circuitry and I/0 not present on this board is aimed at Industrial customers so I'd hazard a guess that this is more geared toward the home user. |

outstanding!! at a reduced price the SAM460 becomes a much better value proposition. i think this is wonderful and i wish acube the greatest success with this board.

| I think it still uses the weird RAM on the previous Sam460 board. Anyway I doubt it will be REALLY that cheap, most probably just 50-100 Euro cheaper.
BTW, CR=Cost Reduced. Last edited by Everblue on 08-Sep-2014 at 03:36 PM.

sound very interesting and as the Sam460's/ A1-500's are very reliable hardware for OS4.1 users this new 'cost reduced' MB I'm sure will be very welcome _________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! Exactly. If they wanted to do a cheap board why not have it use normal Memory you can pick up dirt cheap from any computer store?
Also I hope they get rid of all the on board stuff such as fpga, etc., to bring the price down. But I suspect the difference in this regard will be minimal. I hope to be proven otherwise. _________________

That would require a re-design whereas this is the same board with some without the hardware that most user don't need or want. |

Hmm - I don't know how various RAM types work so I cannot comment :) - All I know is that the RAM used by the Sam460 is quite expensive.
Anyway, anyone thinks that there will be a significant price drop? Or the difference will be "assimilated" by the fact (well theoretically) that the CPU is going to be faster? _________________

IMO 'SODIMM DDR2/800Mhz 2GB or 1GB' (like used on laptops) it's not so weird. I know today there is DDR3, but those DDR2 modules should be now be quite cheap and no so difficult to find. |

| @jabirulo I never saw any before, that is why. But if you say these are used in laptops... sort of makes sense then.

It's not to do with how they work but with the form factor. Fitting a socket for desktop memory would require moving components to make space for the longer socket. Subsequently the board would need to be re-routed for both the the memory and the components that had to be moved to accommodate it. In effect it would be whole new board and if they're going to do a new design it makes sense to move on from the 460 series.

Probably not a massive drop, just the difference in the cost of the absent components and subsequent lower sales tax on on a lower priced board. The only way it would be significantly cheaper is if a customer was ordering tens of thousands of boards
Not sure if the if it will be faster since 1.1Ghz Sam460's are already overclocked by 10%, although that's not to say it can't reliably go higher. |

Thanks for your reply :) - well the more the price drops = the more sales you get. Well, not sure if it works like that, but if it is cheap enough, I'd buy one
Edit: I mentioned the faster CPU because in the photos it has a big heatsink/fan. Last edited by Everblue on 09-Sep-2014 at 01:15 PM.
