Judging by the responses at his website, it seems that the laptop design will nto be open-sourced, it is merely aimed at open-source OS users such as Linux and BSD for PowerPC platform.
Now, it is still very exciting, as so far it sounds like it will be of a decent spec (Altivec + 64bit), and also sounds like it will look like an actual proper laptop, not a briefcase or handmade wooden or palstic box with a bunch of desktop parts plus LCS and keybpoard squished inside. (Certainly no offense to Mr. Heck, though he does go much further with making those look good than most other homebrewers have, they still are usually not a "proper" modern computing laptop look and feel) I very much look forward to learning more about this thing. _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad! |

BTW what I like more about Sam is: it is silent. |
Maybe some people can get a Sam to run silently, but it has been my experience (with two Sam 440s and a Sam 460) that the mobo needs considerable ventilation (read: "fan") to keep running in warm weather. I would not even think about putting a Sam 4x0 into a laptop case without allowing for a permanently running fan.

Maybe in sweeden or norway or inkland but in northern australia except for about a month it crashes after a while without de fan, here. Reminds me of european cars.engineered for snow and ice. _________________ Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

Wow, who put this slideshow presentation together? It is good to see the AmigaOne X1000 and X5000 as well as the SAM listed there!
What PPC processor is intended for this notebook project?
I, for one, would buy it!

Not sure about the exact culprit, but AmigaOne 500 (which, as you probably know) has a SAM460, isn't quiet. It puts out a buzz during normal usage. It's a nice little buzz so I enjoy iy. But it's not quiet. _________________ Proud user of AmigaOS 4.1 on an AmigaONE 500. Would be nice to see a laptop running OS4.x. I installed the demo of MorphOS on my battered old iBook and it ran very smoothly.
Having OS4 on a lappy might encourage me to use it more too.

Yes, Next Gen Amiga computer are listed, cause the author well know the Amiga community. He's in contact with someone... but i can't tell more.
The PPC should be a 64 bit freescale, dual or quad with altivec (as the author stated somewhere)

Don't know who AmiBlitter is referring to, but we have only three companies that could possibly make a laptop for us:
A-Eon (Trevor Dickinson) AmigaKit (Matthew Leaman) ACube (several guys)
If we all keep reminding these three companies that WE WANT AN AMIGA LAPTOP, maybe they will get together and share the enormous engineering costs. And it won't be cheap, don't expect to see an Amiga laptop for $2k or even $3k. How many would they sell? 500 max?

What about emulation on regular laptop? Should be far cheaper than that. |

I think is referring to the both 3 ;) and some amiga community friends.
Roberto Innocenti is not interested in amigaos or in amiga community he only love PPC hardware and LinuxPPC . Everything what he is doing is because this , if amiga companyes will ask him and support him with some founds they will be a wellcome but will not are a prerogative for make him or not his project. Morphos will take a benefit too with this project dont forget about it. Last edited by tlosm on 06-Nov-2014 at 04:03 PM. Last edited by tlosm on 06-Nov-2014 at 03:55 PM.

If exists gerber files for automated manufacturing of that laptop we could ask a chinese manufacturer how much does it costs make 1 batch of 200 or 300 laptops.
But first we need some AmigOS like that is capable to support its hardware drivers...
(any references and suggestions for Hyperion, MorphOS team and AROS PPC community are NOT incidental) _________________ "When the Amiga came out, everyone [at Apple] was scared as hell." (J.L. A colleague has just received his Novena open source portable computer yesterday and has brought it into work today.
Quality build and components and very extensible design. Even the simple industrial design of the platform is appealing in a geeky sort of way.
I couldn't help but think how if this had a Freescale PowerPC instead of the Freescale ARM CPU it would be a perfect way to execute an NG Amiga platform; Modular platform with modular hardware. More hobby-like.

I live in Japan, which puts China, Taiwan and Korea within easy reach.
As for contractual discussions... I would have to add Chinese and Korean with Japanese as additional languages after English.
I stil have some struggling to do learning Japanese as a second language...so I won't be able to do contrac negotiations myself.
Akihabara here in Japan has a lot of this stuff on display if you head off the main street and deliberately get yourself lost for a couple of days.

"Novena is a 1.2GHz, Freescale quad-core ARM architecture computer closely coupled with a Xilinx FPGA"
Even ultrabooks are becoming old news, the latest is tablets. And for that amigaos needs a good touch input stack. Microsoft (with Windows Phone 6.x and Windows CE) proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that a GUI designed around mouse and keyboard does not work well with touch input. It was only when they threw it all out and made a dedicated touch input system with windows phone 7 that windows phones started becoming usable. Apple already knew that, which is why iOS 1.0 looked and felt nothing like MacOS X, but Microsoft's example makes it really obvious.
