Ive got a couple of u in a rack going spare, does anyone know if any Amiga kit has the basics required to fit it into a 1 to 2u rack, redundant PSUs and what its power consumption might be?

Id never use it as a server OS as the Amiga OS is horribly insecure crash prone and only supports one core but I have a kvm.

Sorry, can't help you here. At first I thought you were going to deploy an Amiga in Iraq, but hey, it's early in the morning!

The sam460 and x1000 are ATX board so should mount in any generic 1 or 2u chassis. Have only used dual psu on propietery machines like dells. Don't know how that works on ATX.

Unless you mean you have a classic real amiga you want to rack mount?

Interesting. I somehow doubt they put dual PSU capability on the Sam or X1000 boards. But hey there must be some niche in the nextgen Amiga hardware and software, but being out of the next gen loop I think I would like to ask another question:

Can the X1000/OS4.1 combo be used for video editing and effects to the same tune as the A4K/Video toaster combo of yesteryear?

Perhaps beyond server installs and video machines, discuss where the new Amiga trumps any other platform like we were used to in the 80s and 90s. Right now it is unclear to me and I have been playing the classic card too much in recent years.

@A1200

If I start to ask myself "Amiga, what is it good for?" the second line of the song comes immediately to mind. I'm hoping to see if there is any progress since 2004.

@thread

Has anyone tried getting classic or next gen boards into 1 or 2u cases, I don't want to pay a small fortune and have it overheating on me or not fitting in the first place lol.

Perhaps I'd be better off running UAE on a virtual guest.

Perhaps not quite what you were thinking but I have seen an A1200 mounted in a rack casing. So just to keep it on topic an A1200/PPC should do the trick.

That's funny, though I thought in that context Iraq would refer to self, such as the two deployments that woman has which would be in Iraq. Or to me, Herraq.

When I saw the title I was also thinking of an Amiga being in a set of robotic boobs.

No because of the lack of software.

For AmigaOne systems (XE, Sam, X1000, etc), you would want a 2-u case with low-profile cards. For example, with a Sam 460 CR, I think the audio and SATA would be easy using VIA VT1723 sound, and SIL 3512 SATA. But the video card may be limited to something like the Radeon HD 4350.

Overheating? That makes me laugh. One of the benefits of having the PowerPC processor is the low power consumption and low heat. You would just want to make sure the video card doesn't heat up since rack mount chassis normally don't use video cards.

Now you've tempted me to try installing one of my AmigaOne systems into a low profile case.

Overheating not a problem? Take the fan off that amigaone xe or seal the holes on the case or even a blizzardppc and see how long it lasts!

Useful info indeed though, thanks.

If you mean mix a few video source into one, and do some transition effects, then I think X1000 has CPU power to do that as long as your only going to display the result.

If you wont to compress that mixed video output on HD, then you don't have the power to do that, video compression live needs extreme amount of CPU power, or hardware acceleration.

Right now the only way to feed the X1000 some video is using a TV card (640x480).

Anyway you need the software to do it.

So the short answer is No.

@NutsAboutAmiga

So in essence a 20 year old A4000 is better for video editing? Ok.

@A1200

Yes, The Video toaster was a amazing hardware and software package, and it was designed for TV studios.
The X1000 is not designed for TV studios hardware/software package, its designed as general computer.

Do you remember "Steve Ballmer" screaming "Developers"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8To-6VIJZRE

You need software, so you need developers, to get developers you get some one to pay for the work, for developers they need users, and users wont's software.

So you need a ecosystem, this is what they are taking about on AmiWest now.

years ago, when i built rack installatons including amiga hardware i considered putting motherboards in the rack modules, i ended up finding it too much hassle though. it wasnt a problem to mount the whole machines otherwise.

I love that a chunk of timber is part of the construction! My A1200 tower uses wooden blocks too

No just thinkimg about generic big boobie girls. Hehe.

As to the A1200 in ARack. It's actually a PTG as I just made up or Pattern Test Generator. For testing quality of TV sets. I thought there may be pictures but I can see no links to it, I know the guy who made it and this is his site.

There were some rack modifications that served a certain purpose in the past :
A NetBSD package compiler at sixgirls.org, named lilith, the first server which hosted amigahellas.gr, named loraine and some selfmade rack, uploaded in Aminet.
There is no point to throw away the case and KB (a very nice design, recognizable at a glance) just because there are a couple of racks spare...

Hi

We still have a few left around here in racks.

If you need any help making your own, please give us a call and we can talk you through the pitfalls. We can take some pics for you of the original A1200 placement and areas to insulate etc when putting it all together.

Hope this helps!
