Ok, I got my OS4.1 for Classic and I have a clean Windows 7 laptop.. :P

How to best (easiest/quickest) install OS4.1 and the whole shebang onto this Windows box?

I figure the first step is to install WinUAE some beta22 or what ever the latest is, and what then??

Hard to believe this has happened so fast. I suppose next someone will pull the guts out of the emulation, stick a JIT compiler on it, sit it on Linux and release it as the AmithlonOne!

Would be sort of illegal.

Really, how so? The same thing happened to OS3.9 and real Amigas. OS3.9 was a few years old and then this fast AmigaOS emulaor comes out for the PC. Practically killing off the Amiga overnight. People startied calling the PC an Amiga and said it was the best Amiga software ever. Of course, this is incorrect, as Amithlon is not Amiga software; it is PC software, it runs on a PC. But people have technically incorrect delusions when excited over computers.

Anyway, that's beside the point. What would be illegal about a customised CyberStorm emulator that just happens to be optimised to boot into OS4? And had hooks so PC native code can run from the OS?

Yeah, having said that, not gonna happen!

QEMU CPU core (used by WinUAE for PowerPC emulation) has JIT (for integer operations).

It requires a Firmware. Legally you would Need to:
1. Buy a license or
2. Own a original Turbocard with that Rom.
Don't worry : D As long no one sues there is no Problem and I would only sue 4 People so far living in great britain.. But that has personal moo bunny reasons.

Using WinUAE for such purpose is only stop-gap solution. Porting AmigaOS to QEMU/PPC would be much better idea (and legal).

Sure if you own os4 : ) (owning like Hyperion)

Sounds limited. Also sounds complicated. Why not JIT all the instructions?

As I see it, emulating a PowerPC CPU is fairly simple. All the instructions are one size. And most are made of high 16-bit opcode, low 16-bit data. So all you really need is a 64KB size table with functions for opcodes that exist which then builds up the translated x86 code and caches it. Sure, branches have to be calculated, though you could ensure every translated code is the same length through nops. That may slow it down but the cache would build fast

How do you port an OS to an emulator? AFAIK, QEMU uses an OpenFirmware approach, as PPC emulators tend to emulate PPC Macs. That being said, has anyone tried the Mac bootleg build of OS4 on QEMU?

@phoenixkonsole

Then they need to package all the ROM files together in a bootable and installable package that will take over your PC.

Drivers, drivers, drivers...

From QEMU documentation:

QEMU emulates the following PowerMac peripherals:
•UniNorth or Grackle PCI Bridge
•PCI VGA compatible card with VESA Bochs Extensions
•2 PMAC IDE interfaces with hard disk and CD-ROM support
•NE2000 PCI adapters
•Non Volatile RAM
•VIA-CUDA with ADB keyboard and mouse.

QEMU emulates the following PREP peripherals:
•PCI Bridge
•PCI VGA compatible card with VESA Bochs Extensions
•2 IDE interfaces with hard disk and CD-ROM support
•Floppy disk
•NE2000 network adapters
•Serial port
•PREP Non Volatile RAM
•PC compatible keyboard and mouse.

The QEMU PC System emulator simulates the following peripherals:
•i440FX host PCI bridge and PIIX3 PCI to ISA bridge
•Cirrus CLGD 5446 PCI VGA card or dummy VGA card with Bochs VESA extensions (hardware level, including all non standard modes).
•PS/2 mouse and keyboard
•2 PCI IDE interfaces with hard disk and CD-ROM support
•Floppy disk
•PCI and ISA network adapters
•Serial ports
•Creative SoundBlaster 16 sound card
•ENSONIQ AudioPCI ES1370 sound card
•Intel 82801AA AC97 Audio compatible sound card
•Intel HD Audio Controller and HDA codec
•Adlib (OPL2) - Yamaha YM3812 compatible chip
•Gravis Ultrasound GF1 sound card
•CS4231A compatible sound card
•PCI UHCI USB controller and a virtual USB hub.

It should be easy to do that "port".

A qemu native port non in win uae i means will be more slower than the winuae...
This because the use of PPC cpu in user mode made it work on one core thread and the other part of emulation in another... if on qemu you will have all the emulation on one thread with result of slowdown from about 4x in many cpu operations.

???

I did CPU benchmarks in both QEMU/PPC and WinUAE/PPC - speed is the same. However, current QEMU version (2.1; Windows port) has much slower GFX than good old 0.8.2.

user mode made

It must be full system emulation. I don´t think there is other (easy) way to run OS4 in QEMU.

@pavlor

the winuae qemu is the User Mode . The user mode dont emulate all the hardware but only the ppc cpu and some sys calls.
For sure if you made some benchmarks probably the cpu emulated will be used only and probably the result will be the same for the two versions.
But if you run example quake on winuae (qemu) and quake on qemuppc you will have the same results? the same is with doom.
In this case you have to use all the system parts for better understand the really performances of an emulator...
im sure at 110% the winuae + qemu user mode is the fastest and better solution.
For old macs like my G5 on osx the better emulation will be gave by Euaejit + sheepeshaver cpu because the cpu isnt emulated but virtualized.
on linux ppc will be euaejit + qemu kvm.

Can you provide links to good DOOM/QUAKE ports for PPC (I use Debian Wheezy). It will be interesting comparison - QEMU has slow GFX, WinUAE/OS4 uses 68k GFX driver (with interpretive emulation...).

Not with 128 MB RAM.

AmigaOs with more ram dont change the speed it need 80mb for run good mate ... more ram is need by applications only but not change the overall speed of emulation.

I say a tip .. is better Lubuntu on PPC ;) Wheezy is more havy resurce needed :P
and there the package installer have more applications compared with wheezy .
In both case i use the package installer or apt / aptitude for search and download programs

i forget ... ask tony to emulate a Blizzard PPC in winuae because it allocate more ram 512 if i remember good .. the cyberstorm cant handle more than 128mb

As I wrote, speed is the same. I don´t think it works like you may think.

Memory is the most important factor for usability here.

Blizzard603e is emulated and supports up to 256 MB Fast RAM (should be sufficient). However, CPU emulation is slow (1/10 of emulated CyberstormPPC performance on the same hardware).
