AmigaStore Future Developments- Feedback

Before Matthew takes a backflip thinking "omg, i just released Amigastore and now they make a thread about developments!?", I realise its a work in progress.
Additionally; im still waiting for my AOS4 CD, so if there are features I query about thats already in, I apologize
Also; I know at the moment he is probarly swamped with sorting out the bugreports for the current release (ontop of everything else regarding running AmigaKit), so my comment below is more for pre-empting his future developments when he got time.

A while ago I asked about "friendslist and chat features" like Steam got. Im not sure which direction Matthew is planning for AmigaStore, if he is trying to emulate Steam or Origin for example.

In MY personal opinion; steam went about it the correct way. Low impact storefront and chat system.
Once you load up steam, it shows the Storefront+Todays news/offers. I briefly glance at it and then minimize it, opening the friendslist/watching notifications when buddies open a program they got attached to Steam account.
Origin have much the same approach, but the client and presentation itself was slow, cumbersome.
After trying it for a few days just to give it a fair chance, I got fed up with it and even used steam while playing Origin based games

My point is; Matthew mentioned a few months ago that there are chat+friend features planned, and if thats the case, then I think he should take a very hard look at how Steam windows/client functions and keep it equally low impact.

I consider this an attempt of a constructive comment/critisism of Amigastore, so I welcome anyone to give input about my post/views and come with their own vision about how to improve AmigaStore in the future.

@Overflow

Just made my first two purchases, RadeonHD 2.4 and CANDI.

I was debating whether to buy the RadeonHD driver or not as I already have the earlier version, what sealed the deal was discovering there was an upgrade price. I think this needs to be clearer on the 'store front' as the £40 put me off, I almost didn't bother clicking 'buy'.

Something I didn't like was the fact that you go through to pay and then find there's a surcharge for payment, presumably due to PayPal? I think this should be included in the store front price given there appears to be no other payment options. Having the surcharge added and then going to a further page to find VAT is then added on top on this is dissapointing.

I can understand why VAT is added a checkout if different rates need to be charged when selling in different countries, but I think it needs to be clearer on the store front that prices exclude sales taxes.

On a whole though a very pleasant experience and nice way to buy software, with no virtually no wait apart from downloading of course.

@gtmooya

Indeed, the VAT at checkout has been given alot of attention. Looking at steam it shows the price Im gonna pay.

Maybe include a option in your member profile to display VAT or non-VAT prices as you browse the store library.

I am working on a VAT ON/OFF switch in AMIStore, will hopefully have an update in next 24 hours. Of course users outside EU and Norway, Switzerland will want the prices without VAT and those in the EU will want it with VAT so I will give users the choice to enable/disable VAT inclusive pricing.

Nice to have too an autologin.
Is it possible ?

The password is well remembered but not the userid. And as the userid is not really easily rememberable...

Thank you for your hard work !

Hi. In AMIStore Settings you can set it to auto remember the username every time.

One beta tester also wants autologin so this will come soon :)

@amigakit

I changed my AMISphere password to a more stronger one, but in AMIStore you cannot enter special characters thus I'm unable to login in AMIStore anymore and in AEON's site as well, in order to change the password again. Is there an option to reset the password? PM sent either way.

@amigakit

Hi guys. Great work on the AmiStore so far! Just a thought though -instead of aVAT on/off switch, why not set it and the VAT rate based on th euser's billing address or registered location? That way it'll automatically be correct.

Would be nice to see when some app got updated, some update list or something for the apps that a user bought. And probably an update on whats new in the store since last time or just a changelog :)

Its interesting how the amistore will grow with funktions etc :)

EDIT: Would be nice if amistore online was in sync and same as the app so we can buy and check news from example work etc. I do that also for my android phone. Just log online, check whats new download something and it gets uploaded to the phone :)

Dunno how the legal situation in the UK differs from that in Germany (I think it's gives by Brussels anyway). But for my shop I would get serious trouble if I were showing prices w/o VAT as default setting. Even if I have customers ouside EC and/or business customers. As long as I sell to private customers I am commanded by law to show prices with VAT by default.

I pasted mine into the password box to get my password to work.

I have a ! mark in my password but it won't allow me to directly type it in. :-/

Adherence to AmigaOS development guidelines?

How well does Amistore's (anonymous?) developer follow the official AmigaOS User Interface Style Guide and the overall AmigaOS development guidelines? For instance, does Amistore...

* ... use gadtools.library or Reaction?
* ... scale its GUI according to the selected system fonts?
* ... sport an ARexx port populated with useful commands?
* ... use locale.library for automated currency conversion?
* ... come with proper AmigaGuide online help and documentation?
* ... respond to SIGBREAK-signals?
* ... open up on standard 2-bitplane screens?
* ... provide full support for clipboard.device?
* ... allocate colors using ObtainPen() for its GUI?
* ... use datatypes for rasterizing images?
* ... release allocated resources as soon as they aren't needed?
* ... encrypt the communication between the client and the Amistore server?
* ... register itself as a commodity service?
* ... feature proper $VER version data?
* ... use standard ASL system requesters?
* ... utilize Ringhio popup-messages?
* ... use shutdown.library to allow for stopping (and eventually resuming) interupted downloads?
* ... provide transparent fallback compability options for Kickstart 37 - 40?
* ... strive to use the available system resources as efficient and tight as possible?
* ... dynamically adapt to any low-RAM-situations that can occur, gracefully exiting as a final resort?
* ... run on optimized, Enforcer/Mungwall hit-free, well written and non-bloated C-code?

An application that claims to be the semi-official flagship store for premium AmigaOS software should, of course, set the gold standard for every piece of software it promotes. Credibility is everything.

@Petah

Not sure if you have used it yet.

AMIStore encryption of data is using AES-256 bit through an SSL connection to the server. Passwords can be saved locally encrypted if the user wishes.

Arexx port: check
Commodity: check
Clipboard: check
Ringhio: check
ASL: check

@amigakit
Personally I try not to use non-opensource programs that access the Internet directly (other than a browser). How do we know what the Hollywood libraries are sending to the authors or elsewhere.

When you buy something the program sends you to a WEB page, so why not just start with a link on a WEB page?? This program is just an unnecessary step between the user and a browser and is just an inconvenience.

@amigakit

I will soon send you an updated zTools package.

Is it a way to inform existing users that an update is available (except than posting in forums) ?

Maybe by a mail or by a notification when AMIStore is opened ?

Thank you

I don't know if it's worth the hassle implementing a custom chat system... you can very well create a private room on irc and use that, eventually doing a stripped down client in AmiStore. Or you can install a server-side chat system with PHP or whatever language he's comfortable with and again, implement a light client for its APIs. Why bother reinventing the wheel?
Also, i'm a fan of light and simple GUIs, to be honest
As for VAT, instead of an on/off option you can use the country from the profile and show it by default for EU citizens, as per EU regulation (i think Zylesea is right in that you are obliged to show it at least for us in EU, just like when you buy plane tickets etc.)
