It happened again and totally unexpected. After booting up tonight I got the following message:

Please insert volume: Work In any drive. Process 26 ""

And then it asks me to Assign Volume Work: which is not listed in the Assig directory window. Only System and RAM are listed. All dierctories inside SYS look find. Everything else works; in fact, I'm posting this using OWB in my SAM460ex.

The first time just one month ago, before Amiwest, I had the same issue, but I wasn't able to boot up afterwards. This time it boots up, but it can't recognize my Work: partition.

Last month at Amiwest, a brand new HDD was installed with a fresh install of OS4.1 with all updates.

I haven't used any other external drive devices (USB, external drives, etc.). I mentioned this because last time the problem arose after creating a backup of the Work partition in a USB stick.

I used my SAM460ex normally in the morning. I powered it off and went out. Just to come back tonight and find this mess again.

Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to reinstall the OS?

Thanks in advance for any help that I can get.

@WeiXing3D

Re-installing the OS won't help.

Hasrdware side:

Try switching power cables to the drive, change the data cable etc.

Software side:

Have you tried mounter to mount the partition?

What does Media Toolbox say about the partition?
What filesystem and blocksize?

Do you everything set properly in uboot?

@Severin

Checked all cables and they look fine.

Opened Mounter and there are no devices listed 0-5. How do I do this?

Can I just format that partition again? If this is the way to go, could anyone share with me instructions on how to do this? I have never done this by myself.

This is a 1 TB HDD, with only teh Sys: and Ram: partitions for now, since Work: is now uninitialized.

@WeiXing3D

What filesystem did you use and how big partitions? It sounds like you'd used too big partitions and that's why it got corrupted. With standard SFS you should use partitions under 128GB for example.

@jPV

Can I then reformat that partition and create more of smaller sizes? What do you recommend? and how to do it?

This happens when you have the wrong path set for a program you probably just added or moved somewhere. Check S:user-startup, S:startup-sequence, & Prefs:WBStartup & verify path settings.

@WeiXing3D

You have to tell mounter when device to use in it's tooltypes.

Yes you can format the drive again but as it's 1TB I suggest you partition it into smaller chunks.

SFS allows upto 128gb, SFS/2 can do the whole drive but I wouldn't recommend that.

I suggest you just set up a 120GB SFS partition, blocksize 512 and 2000 buffers and leave the rest unpartitioned until you need more space.

You partition a drive with MediaToolbox.

DO NOT USE JXFS

If you need a big partition, storing movies for example use SFS/2, 512 blocksize and a minimum of 2000 buffers.

Why there are 3 Jack lines in blue color in your WBStartup picture ?
Because they are not found ?

The previous time, you said that your system failed too, did you installed Jack just before the crash ?

@zzd10h

I tried to install Jack just after getting my SAM back but it never worked so I deleted it.

Why those lines are in blue? I have no idea.

"Why those lines are in blue? I have no idea."

I just tested, yes, there are blue because the path is no more available, you can delete them from wbstartup.

I deleted the blue lines and saved, but no chnges. I still have a DH1:Uninitilaized Unit.

I guess it will take some more tinkering

@WeiXing3D

Please run Media Toolbox and included a screenshot of the hard disk partition layout and partition details for the DH1 and other partitions currently setup on your machine.

If you are not sure about Media Toolbox usage, I showed how to access this information on my blog here:

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/inside-my-x1000-and-how-to-addconfigure.html

Don't modify your current configuration right now - just screengrab or take a photo of it.

Without seeing how the partitions are currently configured it is hard for people here to isolate the problem further.

Catcha,
Epsilon

Sorry but I don't know how to attach pictures to the body of posts here, so I uploaded 3 pictures grabbed from the Media Toolbox in Dropbox.

Media Toolbox - Select Device:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6x7kkue88keix28/Media%20Toolbox%20-%20Select%20Device?dl=0

Media Toolbox working on Exec Device
https://www.dropbox.com/s/prk09irffgjtpl0/Media%20Toolbox%20working%20on%20Exec%20device?dl=0

Eit Pertitions:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/f5exxj5vphoy7nw/Edit%20Partitions?dl=0

I hope this can shed some light and help a bit more. The hard disk itself is a Seagate SATA 1TB.

Thank you

The last link shows rhe edit info for DH0, we need to see the settings for DH1, which is your work partition. Just click on DH1 in the upper list or click on the last right hand brown box to show its settings. Maybe grab a picture of your WB showing the uninitialized icon you're seeing.

@WeiXing3D

You have a HUGE SWAP partition, 67GB. That is a waste of space. While you're at it, shrink SWAP to a max of 8GB, but 4GB should be well enough. 2GB is the maximum supported at the moment, but 4GB may be supported in the future.

We haven't got to the cause of the problem yet and you're already going to the last resort! There is no point wiping the floor and reformatting if the problem comes back.

I'd suggest to keep finding all the answers. 20th post here and I still don't know what filesystem you are using.

Also running a Partition Wizard check would be good as well.
