@eliyahu

I hope they leave it in anyway. It's not doing any harm there. If people want to show support for keeping the forums going, there should be a way of doing it.

In the Amiga community we should be actively supporting each other wherever possible.

OK, I admit it, I'm not the brightest button on the shirt and I obviously missed this bit of news but when did the site get bought out?

I guess they have lot of pages to go through because it still says Copyright © 2000 - 2011 Amigaworld.net and old AmiWest banner is still hanging there.

That's just gratis.

Formerly the two banners at top were for primary sponsor (site) and a rotating banner.

described here

Although the primary sponsor banner has been gratis as well in the past, in the early days of Acube, it's had 4 paying sponsors that I'm aware of, not all mentioned in the above thread.

Easy to miss. The AmiWest news thread contained a link, but there was only a thread and not a dedicated news item for the topic.

A1200 is right - I also find it inappropriate with a donate button when the site is owned by a commercial entity.

They should get rid of it asap, or maybe instead point it towards a needed software bounty.

I agree. They should remove the donate button on Amiga.org as well.

Why didn't anyone bring this up when commercial entity DiscreetFX took control during the last takeover?

I don't see the problem. If you don't want to donate toward the running cost of the forum you use, don't donate. If you do, then do. I don't care who happens to own it, if it's a resource that's worth donating for I'll do so.

Anyway Amiga.org had a Feed the Kitty for years and that was a commercial entity. Why the sudden problem?

Donate or don't donate, it's called willpower whether you click the button or you don't.

Really don't see the issue, commercial entity or not.

Rude!

OK, OK, if it means that much to you all I will donate. I understand my favorite teabreak website needs a helping hand. Not sre what kind of supporter I should be. Should I tick the box and go bronze, or show off and go platinum? Silver and Gold? Not sure help please.

BTW, the donation goes to a PP account with David Doyle's name on it. I wonder if the funds are being diverted to the new owners or if DaveyD is laughing with delight at still receiving more money from this site even after the sell off?

@A1200

But I would like to point out, that I think this topic was worth a discussion. Hence, thanks for bringing it up.

And to the actual topic (on supporting donate buttons existence), couple more examples came to my mind.

For wasnt that OS4, the linux thing so that they are basically opearting fully on donations? That idea is not that they are aiming to be like wikipedia, which is just aiming to be plus minus 0, but OS4 is actaulyl hoping for millions, but instead of actually selling like traditionally, they have decided to use pay what you want, if you want.

Humble Bundle offers would be close to this too. Pay what you want, although they do demand that you do pay before you receive, but the payment can be 0.01 USD.

Then slightly different kind of example, and not directly comparable since it is religious, and it is quite typical that religious movements are funded by donations, but there is this Tim McHyde, who keeps funding his research by selling a book he have himself written. But funny thing is, people who had been reading his book, were asking him to put a donation button to his website, so they could support him.

And as last is the thought that why should website forums be free in the first place? For some reason basically all internet forums are free, or at max, funded with advertising revenues.

But couldnt they as well have simply been commercialised? Like pay 5 Euros a year to be a member or Amigaworld.net.

I find it strange that no one have figured out a business out of selling access to some forum. There are some businesses, where you get access to their forum when you pay, but that is just in addition to whatever you bought, that you perhaps get inside tech support forum for 1 year or something when you buy some product. But I have not seen anyone having business where they would simply be selling access to their forum. And I could see that as a viable business plan, as long as you can figure out a suitable topic, which i unfortunately havent been able to figure out.

But in this context, I once again dont see much of a problem with having donation button even on business things, since it can just be one model of selling so to say, where for example in this case, there is value added by more users, and since not every user is willing to pay, hence it is asked only from those willing to pay, to pay, and it is trusted that there are enough people who are valuing this service to receive enough sales (donations) to keep the site running.
