Dear Amiga Lovers!

I have a problem booting the AmigaOS 4.1 FE CD.
I have a SAM440ep with a ATI 9200 PCI GFX Card.
My on-board gfx is broken.
Everything ran fine with Update 6.
But if I try to boot the FE CD the system freezes
after loading a few seconds and showing the new Boot logo.

Can't get it to work. I had the same issue whwn I installed
Update 5 when it was released. The solution these days was to change
a setting in the nvram. But I can't remeber exactly any more waht it was
Maybe I must set it back or something else because of the new gfx lib and subsystem???

Can someone give me a hint what to try?

Thanx in advanve for your time and help!

Best regards
Andi

@fastbit66

Does this help ?

-----
Video output
The current U-Boot version supports video output from:
- onboard SM502 VGA port
- Radeon card on PCI slot
- Radeon card on PCI-Express slot
To change the preferred video output, select it from the Video Option U-Boot menu.
To suppress most of the boot messages, select Silent in the Console U-Boot menu.
-----

Cold boot your SAM and hold down SPACE, then you'l be in Uboot menu.

Choose the Radeon in the menu !! I believe it will tehn boot al the way using the radeon output.

@Metalheart

As an example, right-click WORK: partition and select Information. Go to the Icon tab, where it reads Previews: turn this to 'On'. Repeat for other drives.

Again another thing that should be on by default!!!

A realy stupid question......

How is the Amiga Trashcan supposed to work ?
Should everything that gets deleted go there automaticly ?
Or is it just a drawer where you have to copy stuff you -just not yet- want to get rid of ?
I mean, that is useless is it ? You could just use a drawer named "GetRidOfLater" or whatever... and copy stuff there, and delete it later.

Just wondering....

@Metalheart

I think it's when you delete files it get moved to trashcan

@Metalheart

IIRC it only show previews (thumbnails) of image/pictures.

Trashcan drawer is just a normal drawer. when you delete something on WB it gets deleted forever, not "moved" to Trashcan drawer.
There are 3rd party tools (os4depot or aminet) that do something like Win/MacOS trashcan/recycledbin does.

I too got stuck at the boot screen (on Sam 460).

My solution was to boot into update 6 from the hard drive as normal, prep and format the new partition for FE, run the installer (installing into the new partition), jig the boot priorities and reboot. I went through a bit of testing to make sure that kickstart and WB were successfully installed into the new partition, but it seems to have worked ok.

For Odyssey - delete the font cache see
here for more details.

Yes it does only show previews but you cn also snapshot them to turn them into permanent icons. there are settings in workbench prefs.

Wrong. Trashcan is a drawer with a 'trashcan' type icon. theoretically there should be one trashcan per partition and onything deleted in workbench gets moved to any trashcan folder found on the partition root. if you're files are getting 'deleted forever' then you need to fix your trashcan icon.

This is pointless on SFS partitions as they have .recycled drawers.

Personally I've not used a workbench trashcan for probably 20 years. Just use a decent filemanager like Dopus 4 or 5.

@Severin

No, jabirulo is correct. Things deleted in WB are deleted forever. If you want to use the trashcan you have to move stuff there yourself, then "empty trash". Yes it is pointless. I've never used it. Maybe WB1.3 didn't have a delete option? Can't remember.

Seems to be there (Workbench--Discard) - even in WB1.0.

I had to get help finding it too.... if it was a snake it would have bit me, because now it seems obvious. Heh heh.

In Workbench Window menu.... Show all files in a directory. Then Show Previews. It is more useful if view is set to icons rather than text.

Also, you can set size of thumbnails and even location of cache (I did both, making them bigger) in Preferences/Workbench preferences/Icons/Preview tab.

@Chris_Y

Maybe it's changed in the last 20 years, last time I used it was KS2.1 and probably patched or my memory is failing (very likely).

Hey dudes, there's also a "cache" setting in SYS:Prefs/Workbench. Icons tab and since it's in swedish here I'd guess that the tab is called "Preview". Cache seems very usefull since it takes a while to load catalogs with lots of pictures.

ok, next issue....

I tried setting up a different imageviewer to open jpeg images from WB (not Multiview)
But WB keeps opening them using multiview.

I edited the def_jpeg icon and even copied it as de_jpg to be sure.
I used deficons prefs to add jpg using the "learn" button.

Any ideas on this ? How does def icons work ?

Martin
