@Metalheart

Maybe you need to reboot (fast) your Workbench so your Def_Icons changes are (re)used.

My deficons prefs for JPEG are:
[-]picture
|
....
| jpeg
| jpg
...

JPG actions (right window):
MACROCLASS

JPEG actions:
MATCH 0 "\xFF\xD8" [case sensitive]
OR
MATCH 6 "JFIF" [case sensitive]

Double click on JPG (left window/list) makes nothing as I don't have a def_jpg.info file (just def_jpeg.info)
Double click on JPEG shows up def_jpeg.info (project icon) and I can change there Tool to my fav picviewer

The hacky way to do it would be:

Delete ENV:Sys/def_Jpeg.info

then Update any window with existing def_jpegs icons.

Snapshotted icons will need manual updating.

What I noticed (X1000 version):
- There is a strange new boot sound after the Kickstart is loaded and before the OS4 splash screen. The normal boot jingle comes later too. The new boot sound is some strange short monophonic rectangle(?) waveform melody. Why does it play? Does it signal some error? Can I turn it off? It's a bit annoying.

- This one I had with the previous version too: I can't do a warm reset on my X1000. It just goes to a black screen and nothing happens. Is that a known problem? Is there a way to fix it? In normal use it's not as annoying to have to do a cold boot once the system crashes, but as I'm doing some coding again now I also have to reboot often and a warm boot would help a lot.

Okay go through the following steps.

Soft reboot and don't go near any image files

Open Prefs/DefIcons

Find the Picture/jpeg subclass

Either double click on it or go to Menu->Icon->Information either way you should get the Icon information requester.

Check the default tool if not what you want, (eg still Multiview) set it to the new program ( with full path).

SAVE the information requester and quit deficons.

Now do

delete ENV:sys/def_jpeg.info from the shell

.

Got a directory in workbench with jpegs in it.

Ask your self the following question.

Does this file have it's own icon or is it a deficon? (Usually the deficons are transparent).

If def_icon double click to display in new program

If own icon then edit icon as with the default icon above, deficons cannot (and should not) override the settings in an existing iocn.

@Metalheart
@yoodoo2

The uboot trick didn't work - couldn't find the radeon option.

But the way yoodoo2 described semmed to work. I could install and the system is booting
AmigaOS 4.1 FE. Even I had a lot of unassigned error messages during installation.

But now I have the same behaviour I had when installing update 5:
When WB is being loaded the system freezes compeletly. The resolution is ok and I can senn the vlome icons WB DH1 DH2 and RAM . In the middle of the screen I can senn a white square shape without any icons. This must be the window foe AMIStart. That's all. System completely frozen
If I boot without startup-sequence thesystem starts.

Is there a way to tell at boot time to use radeon driver or is a setting in uboot (nvvar settings) incorrect?

Thanx a lot again!

Andi

AMIStart ? I think you mean WBstartup

Sounds like something in WBstartup is crashing.

Start without startup-sequance,

Run SYS:prefs/WBStartup and disable everything, save and reboot.

If that starts readd items one by one til you find the culprit.

That is a new boot sound in a style of the original A1000 played through some kind of "PC speaker" feature of the onboard sound chip. If you want to get rid of it you'll have to modify your Kicklayout file (look for bootsound).

That might be depended on the graphics card. Some Radeon models don't like soft resets. What Radeon card do you have ?

I don't have FE yet but you should not need to change your DefIcons preferences. I changed the viewer by doing this:

Opened DH0:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys/def_jpeg.info with the WorkBench Icons/Information menu item.
Switched to the icon Tab.
Changed the "Default tool" to "Work:Viewers/LoView/LoView" and selected Save in the Information window.
Rebooted and copied a JPEG file to RAM: without an icon (C:Copy Work:pics/brochure.jpg TO RAM:).
Opened the RAM: window on WorkBench and double-clicked the "brochure" icon and the picture opened in Loview.

As Andy pointed out, all "real" jpeg icons (saved ones) need to be manually edited to change the Default tool.

Audio Evolution and HD-Rec are fine. So is BarsNPipes but that is now OS4 friendly thanks to Lyle so not really in same category as the older stuff that is not maintained in any way.

Around the time OS4.0 came out, I did a bit of beta testing of HD-Rec for Thilo.
IIRC, he squashed any bugs I found very quickly and had it working fine on 4.0 so it's nice to know it's still "OS4 friendly".

Noticed that the "classic" release doesn't do PNG icons by default, I had to install the special icon module for it. If I understood it correctly this do work out-of-the-box on the Sam460 release, any ideas why this differs ?

Some other stuff I noticed is that there are some swedish strings that is not translated yet and also some misses in the menues like :

And while we're at translations, changing the language in locale doesn't change the
strings in the new context menu (directly) even though the normal meny strings are changed, on a reboot it's changed but not before that.

Strange I've got the feeling that WB and Odyssey are slower, taking more time to update the screen.

Also every now and then my USB mouse/KB stop working, then an USB message pops up "USB atachment" (like when you first plug in an USB device) and all works again. (Had this also prior to FE)

@Thread

Is it worth upgrading on an AmigaOne XE with its hardware quality issues? Mine is under clocked down to 600Mhz due to being unstable at its regular 800Mhz.

@Develin

PNG icons needs (not changed in FE) png.iconmodules (http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=library/misc/png_im.lha) is a 3rd party contribution or so.

About contextmenu translation it doesn't use a "typical" .catalog it's just a plain text file in LOCALE:Catalogs/ and contextmenu.cfg that is in ENVARC: so maybe some strings may shows translated (.catalog) and others don't (.cfg)

They don;t work out of the box on any AmigaOS 4 installation but need the third party png icon module, available on OS4depot.

Context menus aren't "proper" menus but are provided by the contextmenus commoddity, like most programs this needs restarting to refresh it's strings.

Standard strings (ie ones that match the main menus) are retrieved from the main OS catalog. Non standard ones aren't translated, would be an awfully clever bit of software if it could translate autmatically :-0

I'd say yes (being sligthtly biased as a beta tester, of course, but still ...)

I have tested FE on two different XEs (G3 and G4, both running at 800 MHz, though), and to me it feels snappier, which can only be an advantage on older, slower hardware. Add to this all the bug fixes and enhancements.

Best regards,

Niels

@nbache

I agree, AOS 4.1 FE is nicer overall and it's cheap so why not? On the other hand it's feeling like it's time to upgrade to something more modern. Meanwhile, I'm very happy with this release

However, I still get popup-menus in odyssey with only one visible options, the rest being blank. It doesn't happen all the time though (trying right now and it works and just a moment ago it didn't).

From the first install till yesterday I got green colours appearing here and there while using Odyssey and now I haven't seen it for a long time.

The case has many times been that some weird things appear when you install aos 4.x but in time while you're changing settings, installing things the way you want it and so on those issues disappears :) . It's very odd like somewhere something depends on something else or I don't know what. It doesn't bother me except that I get suprised every time. That's been specific to AOS 4 since forever.

I'm not complaining, I actually find it amusing and weird, that's all. Totaly Amiga Only. Don't know why, maybe I should care why but I'm having too much fun and eventually everything's working like expected :) . Please developers, try to see it from a users perspective, I'm not teasing nor complaining.
