Where are the sources ? link ?

Alain

Just download a3dsrc1.lha - a3dsrc6.lha from Aminet.

NOTE: While the sources aren't that useful, the packages are still interesting. They contain lots of graphics aswell, some of which weren't used in the game.

I don't think you should bother doing anything with this code. You will spend a lot of time to understand and refactor this code. And this is a very old game with an old engine.

Instead I think you should start a new project. Use a more modern language. C or C++. And make a game inspired of AB. So that your creativity is not limited to a game made several years ago. And use a more modern 3D engine. Maybe use AmiDark now when you have payed money for it? But a more stable engine is preferred. The community need more new software as I see it.

The sources are in 68k asm. A native version is pretty much impossible.
The proposed patch seems a much better idea to me.

Also, the thread was about updating ab3d2, not about writing a new game, game engine, etc.

Just because its an old game doesn't make it bad.
If old automatically meant bad, none of us would be here.

Other than AROS any game made for amiga-oids is always going to look old, dated. Doesn't mean they cant be fun.

Exactly. Being a bad game (well, much worse than the first one...) is what makes it bad.

As for patch, what exactly is there to patch? Does it fail to work on some NG systems?

There's already RTG patch out there. Turbo patch is rather irrelevant, as I think it's AGA only I think (and exists, if you need it), the game runs too fast on MorphOS anyway...

@Jupp3

Wouldnt say it was "bad". I remember I loved it "back in the days".

Just had a look at a longplay, and it brought back good memories
But I agree it looks terribly dated, and that the first version looks better.

i dont see why tkg is considered such a bad game in comparison to ab3d that looks like stright owful low res doom clone with static boring gfx filling half the screen.

See? You left the problem RIGHT THERE without doing anything about it! That's not "simple"

Actually I could see in my head even though I haven't looked at it in years and confirmed again the mess just then. So yes I do see it!

Quote:
But as you said, it's not "a mess", it's "the mess". I mean, giving copyright of your game to Hisoft is "funny little detail", but the code itself is not any better.

Yeah I saw a lot of code with HiSoft at the top. AB3d copyright HiSoft. Texture mapper copyright HiSoft. Team17 opyright HiSoft..

The mess is bad enough but what do you assemble? The only thing that makes sense is a file name demo something. But where on earth is the main executable?

Quote:
Of course if there are some smaller issues, such as code writing to memory locations it shouldn't, that might be realistically patchable.

Despite being a 3d game that's a bit chunky, which tended to not make use of Amiga hardware, it actually bangs the hardware quite a lot. So all that would need to be removed. All input would need to use OS routines. Gfx would need to use OS routines and be able to switch a chunky buffer on screen. Audio would need changing to use AHI including the PT music rep[layer.

First one was way better,

Which is funny as it had that Super-Low-Res chunky copper mode by Andy Clitheroe. 12-bit RGB tru colour. Okay on my plain A1200, flew when I got my 030!

I had to run TKG in a screen size about the same size as the AB3D playfield size. At double resolution. But it didn't fly.

@Andre4s

Alien Breed is like a fine wine...

@tlosm

Awesome (why SDL over amigfx tho ?)
I'll have to try that out, but this doesn't rule out an update from what I'm seeing

@OlafS25

Thats very unfortunate to hear, I suppose what could be done is gutting out 68k emulatution
out of UAE if its opensource (as always, with permission) or finding another 68k emulator and incorperating it into the patch.

@all

Seeing the issues people has posted here , an general update is required

To sum it up a bit

judging from the posts here, all in for the first game ?
(Tho the mine in the second game would be an absolute killer in MP )

Mains:

* The game has to be processor speed independent

* RTG and AHI support

* Patches for all NG (with AROS ?)

Extra's (not necessary)

* Support for high resolution textures for mappers (I'm not saying that the game's textures needs to be updated)

* Editor has to work in all NG (seperate for each)

* Multiplayer improvement (internet play, more players in a match)

Anything to add?

Althrough it sounds a bit too much for a bounty now, doesn't it ?
Seems like we'll have to bug Team 17 then, who I bet are as clueless as we are with the code..

You do know there already is RTG & AHI patch for TKG? (released back in 1998) - Sadly using RTGMaster, which can be quite... problematic.

#1 announced feature of the game:

Ability to play Alien Breed 3D 1 levels with the new engine.

This was definitely announced during the development, but dropped for some reasons before the release. No idea how close they were & why was it dropped...

I was using the SDL version from Michael and was a really old Euae Jit beta probably beta 1 or 2 ...
I will test it on 1.0 on My powermac g5 ;) or on X5000 when it will be done :P

Yeah, playing AB3D in 1x1 resolution (320x256) in full screen with gfxcard support should help to enjoy this game even more.

For me it doesn't count how obsolete engine it has, I simply love it. Even my nickname came from AB3D, thanks to my friends :) )

But seriously, playing it in better reslolution, and/or higher framerate would be truly awesome.

Does that RTG patch work on OS4? Last time I tested it years ago I couldn't get it to work. My AB files may have been messed up slightly. But given it would still hardware bang even with RTG/AHI patch I don't hold much hope.

IIRC I kind of got it to work in early OS4 days. It wasn't really playable and crashed very often.

@Topic: Wouldn't it be easier to analyze the level file format and use a new engine for playing them?
