| Just want to see if people are willing to donate for something like that.
Nothing extreme, all I have in mind is to take the existing AHI & RTG patches (with permission) and alter them a bit to work on OS4, MOS and AROS. No PowerPC rewrite.
Nothing happing at the moment, I'm not even sure if this is legal, getting paid for altering commercial source code that is.
Would be fun to deathmatch eachother on four differnt platforms _________________ Best way to enjoy Amiga is without the community |

Would be great to get it running nicely on MorphOS for sure. Didn't the source code get released years ago? |

I'll donate. AB3D is one of my all time favourite games. Killing grounds is also nice. Didn't run very well one my A1200 back then. Last edited by juMa on 28-Jan-2015 at 05:01 PM.

Yes, they are open source (and freeware on dream 17) since.. 1997 I believe ? If I can recall right, programmers who took a look at it couldn't understand one bit of it, well atleast it was difficult as it didn't have any comments ?
I've tried the RTGmaster patch for AB3D 2 on 4.1 FE (which strangely activates warpos) afther assigning the sfx drawer I get the error message.
"failed to allocate 4410 bytes !"
Does anyone have luck with it on MOS/AROS ? _________________ Best way to enjoy Amiga is without the community |

Definitely. A cross platform AmigaOS4 and MorphOS release should be a bounty expectation. |

I am in and bought the game at that time !
on my B1260 it was crawling and had to lower the window size to have to playable...
still I am wondering if it would not be easier to transfer the gfx and sound to another engine like doom or quake, since this is supposed to benefit Amiga-NG ? |

I thought it already runs nicely on MorphOS? At least it did the last time I tried.
Or actually "too nicely", the framerate is so high some in-game physics (such as opening the doors) break somewhat.
But there definitely are bugs. Lots of them. Some purely visual (not sure if the floor moved at different speed on classics? Or was it just too slow to notice), others can crash the game.
Anyway, it IS released open source. I took a look at code once, and it... "Doesn't look very portable", to put it nicely.
I guess it tells something about code quality, if large amount of used source code files start with: Quote:

(I'm not kidding, if you don't believe me, check for yourself...)
-EDIT- As for using another engine, Doom won't do.
Alien Breed 3D 1 & 2 support walkways on top of each other, which Doom engine doesn't.
Honestly, I'd be more interested in playing Alien Breed 3D 1 levels in more modern engine...Last edited by Jupp3 on 28-Jan-2015 at 10:29 PM.

Not quite true...
Check out http://arosgamer.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/alien-breed-goes-odamex-interview-with.html
So all you need is Odamex (which has just been ported to Classics) Last edited by NovaCoder on 28-Jan-2015 at 11:01 PM.

Does WHDLoad not work on AmigaOS or MorphOS? I remember that I tested Alien Breed games in WHDLoad and they even work with the rom replacements. Why the patch then? |

Well, duh...
Like you said yourself, that runs on Odamex engine, not Doom engine
Sure, it's based on Doom, but it's got so many new features & enhancements, that if you use them, the resulting game will no longer run on the (original) Doom engine.
Not saying this would be a problem at all, just that (the original) Doom engine won't do (as someone mentioned it) |

Yes I would love this to work in AmigaOS 4.1 I loved the original Alien Breed 3D.

AGA is a bit taxing to emulate and you will be restricted to lower resolutions and 8 bit color depth (if the latter is even a problem)
I'm not too keen with rebuilding AB into another engine as replicating the handeling, lighting and atmosphere would be difficult and will likely not be spot on. And I think non of us would be bothered to do that
New question, does AROS actually have 68k emulation ? Last edited by Trewq on 29-Jan-2015 at 01:56 PM.

AROS has no inbuild 68k emulation (if you think of something like Petunia). Either you run something Aros 68k based like my distribution in emulation or on real 68k hardware or (when using X86 like Icaros Desktop or Aeros) you run it in UAE. It is then as transparent as possible but not exactly the same as in MorphOS or AmigaOS. It is like using UAE in AmigaOS f.e.
In Icaros Desktop you use Aros X86 and start Aros 68k in the emulation (or Amigaforever if you have installed it). Last edited by OlafS25 on 29-Jan-2015 at 02:19 PM.

| I had been test Alien Breed 3D II the killing ground with the aminet rtg patch on Euae-jit SDL and on Pegasos 2 1266mhz and Radeon 9000 pro was fast and enjoyable like was on real amiga 4000 with 060 66mhz and Cybervision 3d . For sure have it running as native on OS4 on Morphos on fastest cpu (compared with 060) and Gpu (compared cybervision) will make us play it at 1920x1080 pix ;) at 120fps

I think it would be fine if it had some kind of makefile in there. That could actually assemble the whole thing into an executable. Then you could simply work around the mess and edit it.
Apart from the source it also needs datafiles. Or demo ones included. Unless the gfx and audio files were included. |

See? You left the problem RIGHT THERE without doing anything about it! That's not "simple"
But as you said, it's not "a mess", it's "the mess". I mean, giving copyright of your game to Hisoft is "funny little detail", but the code itself is not any better.
Is this where you were supposed to branch to "not"? Or was it "notnot"? No, I'm pretty sure it was "notnotnot" instead...
Take a look at the sources. I mean it.
Only way I could see to "modernize" them, is spend a lot of time finding basic physics, limitations etc. and code a new project based on those, from scratch. Of course that would be way beyond proposed "patch" (as it would likely be bigger than the data to patch)
Of course if there are some smaller issues, such as code writing to memory locations it shouldn't, that might be realistically patchable.
But overall, I don't think Alien Breed 3D 2 was that good game. First one was way better, but the sequel has more advanced engine (well, too advanced, see framerate ) |

I agree, AB3D was fun, wish there was a remake with better gfx. AB3D 2 was probably technically good, but not so fun imo. |

Tried them under PowerMac G4 1.67Ghz/9800Pro, MorhpOS 3.7 with e-uae jit (not SDL). Both AB3D and AB3DII whdload (version 17.3) slaves gave me black screens after the options menus. Will investigate further. Did you choose other cpu on the uaerc than 020?
@all
Just porting the game(s) won't be sufficient imho. The textures are really - really dated. Perhaps a port with graphics that will look decent even on nowadays ancient resolutions (like 800x600) would be the minimum imho but I am not sure that anybody has expressed such interest.
Btw, is the game portable on other platforms somehow? Perhaps modders from the wider PC/Linux/Retro/Mod DB community could undertake such work. _________________
