@pavlor

Stephan Rupprecht did the colorwheel gadget port for AmigaOS 3.9 plus he also worked on AmigaOS 4.0. So the chances of him not having his source is pretty slim. ;)

There's a great truth behind your joke, sadly. The "community" was millions of people large back in 1995, when AROS moved its first steps. I guess it was still thousands of people large in year 2000, wich also means that if people DID help at the time, now AROS would have been really different. We'd see the first complete distributions back in early 2000s instead of late ones, and now the situation would be quite different.

I was not joking.

With such fractured community like ours, any progress is realy hard. I think point of no return was in 2002, when remaining developers choosed their side in Blue/Red divide. It was expected back then that community of 5000 AmigaOne users could create viable platform. Such number could be achieved - combined numbers of sold AmigaOne/Pegasos computers were probably close to it.

If OS4 project has been started at least 2 years earlier, there would be probably no divide and our community would be much healthier and less fractured than today.

AROS has nothing I repeat nothing to do with Hyperion's bankrupcty. AROS is not in my opinion competition for AmigaOS as it seems to position itself as competition for Amiga Forever on PeeCees! I'm not aware of AROS now being 'complete' or the definitive Amiga experience and I'd probably give MorphOS a chance on my old iBook G4 before I ever got around to giving AROS a go. It is simply not exciting and since I do not think it is and I actually remember and like Amigas from the first time around, I don't see that the general public are going to give it a chance either on anything other than the Raspberry Pi.

AmigaOS promotes investment in new Amiga hardware which is what interests me. I don't consider standard PC hardware exciting. Heck Apple have to virtually make their machines gadget jewellry to sell the concept and Macs are still underpowered PCs at heart!

In conclusion this thread is about Hyperion and AmigaOS and AROS simply has no part in this discussion. Maybe you got it confused with some hypothetical

'Hyperion are no more, now what?'

... thread? Other than that I have no idea why it's being mentioned

@BigD

If Hyperion going bankrupt means that OS4 becomes orphaned, some OS4 developers may find their way over to AROS, or they decide to continue on their own and realize that they are prohibited from large parts of OS4 because of legal issues, they may want to turn to AROS for the missing pieces, like OS3.5+ and MorphOS have before. I would say it is quite relevant.

assuming you speak about os4 in the kind of shape and origin we have today it would be even worse, because even more people may have been dragged along the never ending death path.. we are witnessing now.

on the other hand, it might have been all over by now, which doesnt sound so bad.

You think that with more users AmigaOS4 would be in worser state than today? You must realy hate AmigaOS.

considering that from all alternatives os4 is in worst state, especially if it loses a company behind it, at least from my point of view, yes. ;) it wouldnt be so great.

What you are talking about is a mass exodus of Amiga developers and users. I simply would not consider using a NG system of any sort should AmigaOS be put out to pasture. It is the last chance at retaining any semblance of a link to the Classic machines and to market the Amiga to the wider world and attempt to make some money in the process.

Without AmigaOS the remaining Amiga flavours will inevitably dry up! MorphOS has given up pushing new hardware since Genesi's departure. AROS is a toy for PC owners and will be lucky to have any developers never mind ex-AmigaOS ones. If I was a developer I'd see the end of AmigaOS as a sure sign to finally give up on all things Amiga NG and jump to Linux, MacOS, heck any other OS with a future!

I would think most OS4 developers already have "jumped" to other systems a long time ago, Developing AmigaOS has been a hobby for many over the years, why would they quit their hobby?

How do you know , who is "PC owners" ? You seem to be talking in general terms, so you actually have no point to make.

Seriously if you're gonna talk shit about AROS at least bring some facts to the table, you sound like a broken record.

Popcorn is still good though so bring it on.

Would you stop bringing up AROS. This thread is about Hyperion's utter failure as a company and there is no need to keep bringing up AROS. :)

Sorry to burst your bubble but the mass exodus you're referring to happened years ago. The only Amiga programmers left are hobbyists or those who already have other jobs and dabble in Amiga programming as a sideline, including the Friedens. And Amiga's last chance also passed about 20+ years ago when Gateway bought all the IP and then did nothing. The same can be said for users. There are probably less than 100 Amiga users who can still claim to be making an money via their Amiga. I wish all this talk about Amiga returning to solvency would just stop because it's absurd. If it were possible, it would have already occurred. Amigas are nothing more than a hobby these days and that's where they'll remain.

I'd imagine that the vast majority of active Amigans are not OS4, AROS or MorphOS users but classic users anyway.

It's a shame to let politics get in the way of at least trying an OS that gives you much of the user experience that you enjoy.

You should look at what's actually happening in the classic community. There are new FPGA Amiga-compatibles that are much closer to a 'real' Amiga than the next-gen machines that everyone's been arguing about.

One reason that next-gen machines exist at all is that you couldn't improve AGA or make faster 680x0s. Now, that stuff is just a firmware update away.

Already you can run OS 3.x on a brand-new machine, or drop an FPGA accelerator into an A600 and get 200mhz 020 speeds, or install AROS on a classic Amiga and run a piece of software compiled in 1991 alongside a copy of OWB. (EDIT: ok that last one is possible with emulation or a PPC accelerator but not on a pure 68k machine)

Did the 'next-gen' ever allow the past and present of the Amiga to co-mingle like that? I don't think so.

Chris

In conclusion this thread is about Hyperion and AmigaOS and AROS simply has no part in this discussion.

The discussion of AROS in this thread is perhaps off-topic at times, but less so that other topics that have been raised. The fact that you don't want it to be part of the discussion is beside the point.
