Says someone who calls AmigaOS as "HyperionOS".

Edit: Wasn´t there some unofficial rule to close thread after 1000 posts and start new one?

Why do you believe that another poorly supported, obscure OS, such as DragonFly BSD should be a successor to our already poorly supported and obscure OS?

The primary difference is that DragonFly is an actively maintained OS with a state-of-the-art filesystem and clustering capabilities, whereas AmigaOS, from a design standpoint, is a dead-end.

Have you ever used DragonFly BSD, since you find it "more amiga like"?

Yes, I'm using the current release, and trying to get it working with Lumina DE. I find it more Amiga-like than the Linux-based systems that I have been using in that there's a whole lot less of it, yet it seems just as capable. I have not been able to get Amiga emulation working yet, but I think it is possible.

You've got to be joking or seriously out of touch. DragonFly doesn't even support nVidia graphics. The last time it did, was prior to 2006.

And why would any Amiga user want clustering capabilities? And even if they did, there are much better options for clustering than DragonFly.

So you think you can somehow disregard us by calling us "so called Amiga fans". Well for starters OS4 isn't AMIGA and has never been. It has been HyperionOS with a licensed permit to call it AmigaOS, So AROS, MorphOS users not being AMIGA fans is just in your imagination. Many of us probably even more of an AMIGA fan than you ever will be.

and ranting about how AROS will hopefully steal all its old code base and developers! That is what sounds like wishful thinking Manu!

And the day AROS steals any code from OS4 that will be the day, on the other hand I'm quite sure it happened the other way around and lots of times.

Matt Dillon had a long story with Amiga before jumping fully to BSD, and has many timed let the world know that certain aspects in the DragonFly BSD kernel is indeed inspired from Amiga, such as yes - the internal message passing, but also things like variable dependant symlinks (akin to assigns in AmigaDOS/TRIPOS/VMS).

Just a few links...
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=766375
http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/mailarchive/kernel/2003-08/msg00033.html

Having a kernel inspired by the original Amiga OS is exactly why I wouldn't want to use it today. Time marches on and so does kernel design. I'm sure Matt was inspired, but that's not enough to get me or most other people to use DragonFly as a primary OS.

I've used DragonFly and it's just painful. I've also attempted to install it on various systems, mostly with failures due to poor hardware support (GPU and USB) and since it's a fork of BSD one is better off using the non-forked version or Linux.

In the meantime however, some in the AROS camp now seems to want open a new wave of hostility.

I sould not paint everybody with the same stroke, but had some displeasing experiences with some os4 users and simpathizers on the italian forums that gave me the impression this people think sincerely to be a better person than me because of the os they use or even because they spend loads of money on it while i cannot due to tight budget;
those two kind of users are the ones that make boil my blood and, while not exclusive to Amiga and os4, they IMO give the community bad name;
plus Mr.Hermans thought to focus mainly on those two kind of people for its marketing so there is a higher concentration of them on os4 "by design".

You just insulted every one that use AmigaOS4.1, with your generalization.

That's just bull shit, stop writing carp, and maybe you get less crap back.

Support for Nvidia graphics is not the holy grail of OS design.

I never implied nor stated that it was the holy grail. I was pointing out how "unsupported" DragonFly is compared to what most users expect. They expect an OS to support their expensive 3D GPU, and DragonFly is already lacking support for 1/3 or more of the folks out there since it doesn't support any nVidia cards. It hasn't supported nVidia cards in 9+ years. That's almost as bad as OS4 only supporting12+ year old AMD/ATI video cards.

@NutsAboutAmiga

there are people that see AmigaOS superior to Aros because the AmigaOS users are willing to buy expensive hardware.

there are persons who think that way, I even got exactly this told

What is certainly not true are "the..." generalisations

@OlafS25

i can give the culprit names, since those are the ones i am mad with, not the others; however, if anybody think to be better than me because of the OS he use or because is chauvinistic with its money (not limited to computers, in the area of LA where i live i see people living on section-8 apartments driving $100k BMW), it gets on my nerves and on my blacklist.
An no, am not better than them but is the priniciple.

Oh, I see -- you're speaking on behalf of "most users" now.

I think you should give it a rest. It's not like the system is totally unusable because it doesn't support Nvidia graphics.

No, that seems to be your department.

And keep using DragonFly. I don't want to discourage you in that regard but most Amiga users aren't going to switch to it because it has many of the same problems as OS4. Why dump a poorly supported, dead-end OS for another?

@OlafS25

who?

I have not seen any comment from OS4 users, saying that they are upper class snobs because of the hardware or OS they use.
