Why, oh why isn't the Amiga community bigger then I could have someone come round and fix this mess I've made with my Sam440ep.

Used to boot great into OS 4.1.6 but now having tried a RadeonHD card I get nothing, I can no longer boot into Workbench however I can get into uboot but I don't have all the prefs options available.

My aim was to ditch using the internal M9 graphic processor with a VGA to VGA cable to a monitor and bring my Sam440ep downstairs add a RadeonHD card and use a HDMI to HDMI lead to my TV.

I checked with HDRLab website to get compatible card so should be no problem with that.

@1Mouse

What card do you have and which version of the driver do you have?

Have you bought and installed the RadeonHD driver? 1.x anyway, not much point using 2.x on a sam440ep.

That most likely won't work, TV's overscan HDMI connections you'll lose roughly 10 to 20 pixels around each edge and because it will no longer be an exact pixel match (scaled) the whole image will be fuzzy. Better to use DVI into your TV if possible.

Compatible with the driver or with the sam440ep ?

@Severin

The thing about buying the driver was my biggest mistake, I didn't download it yet, thought I could install the card and then the divers.

I have a DVI to HDMI cable so that shouldn't be a problem.

I bought a Club3D RadeonHD 5450 PCI Edition so should work with the 0.49 driver as listed on HDRLab.

@1Mouse

Cant you just remove the Radeon HD5450 and boot your original hardware configuration,install the driver and then put the Radeon HD back in ?

I'm sure you can see the chicken and egg there you've got yourself into.

Had you an OS4.1FE CD you could have at least got to a Workbench with a cut down driiver.

So now you need some RadeonHD driver installed and activated in the Kicklayout before the new VGA card will work with AmigaOS.

install it maybe but not change anything in uboot or maybe it's automatic and uboot comes up on the HD card but workbench is displayed on the M9. best way is to hook up 2 displays while setting up.

That doesn't work, if you plug an HDMI lead into a tv you get overscan no matter what is on the other end of the cable. I've tried DVI to HDMI with my sam flex and X1000, and HDMI to HDMI on the x1000, and all resulted in overscan

0.49 is old, you'll probably get 1.4.

Why do they bother with these alledged standards? I would have thought HDMI would direcly display a HD or given resolution through the display device. But if it doesn't do that exactly I dont see the point of it.

@all

Am now getting somewhere, I can get it to boot into my original AmigaOS4.1.6 and have been able to go on AmiiStore and install my RadeonHD driver.

I have restarted my Sam and I have no idea where the driver has been installed or how to go about getting my RadeonHD card working.

Surely now the driver is installed on my system somewhere I should just be able to plug in the HD card and away I go.

Don't think so.
You should check first.

What are the versions in the sys:kickstart drawer.
So that you did not just unpack the files.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I downloaded to RAM and extracted from there.

There is a RadeonHD.chip file in the kickstart drawer.

Thought there'd be a file in Devs/monitors folder.

@1Mouse

Well that be the configuration, you should not need a monitors file.
I think that’s legacy.

I just removed my monitor file did a quick reboot; too see what happened and it worked.

@NutsAboutAmiga

So I just need to plug in my RadeonHD card, move the M9 from devs to storage and connect my computer via the new card?

As far as I know, you just dl'ed the driver in ISO format, so not installed. If thats the case, you need to burn the ISO to a disk & then run the installer. the driver will get installed in Sys:Kickstart, it will get loaded on a cold bootup after.

Open a shell & type "version sys:kickstart/radeonhd.chip" (no quotes) to see what you have now.

Edit: I have a 9250 in my sam440, so no need for the radeon driver, no idea about uboot settings, wonder if my old 4850 would work in it.

Yes something like that, but workbench might decide that you're going to use M9 anyway.

If that is the case press CTRL key while booting and you should end up in AmigaDOS, so you can start IPREFS and find your way to SYS:prefs and screen mode prefs.

@sundown

I got the file from AmiStore which dowloaded to RAM and then used the installer to install on the system.

I have just check and it is version 1.2 that is installed.

1.2? should it not be 2.4?

try again this time type this:

"version file full sys:kickstart/radeonhd.chip"

Or else you might get the version of some thing in memory.

@NutsAboutAmiga

I didn't get the most recent as version 1.2 covers the card I purchased
