Nice work. I like your kernel .config for for 4.1 . Notice any increase in the response time ?

I released the final version of the Linux kernel 4.1 today. |
I use linux for some things, but not enough to be an expert. Do I just un-archive this new release & just copy it over to my cf card to use it?. Still using Ubuntu 12.04LTS._________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

From my point of view there aren't any improvements in the response time.
@sundown
Instructions:
1. Download the kernel 4.1 final: vmlinux-4.1-AMIGA_one_X1000.tar.bz2
2. Unpack the kernel package
3. Copy the kernel vmlinux-4.1 to the CF card
4. Copy the kernel modules directory (4.1.0- ....) to /lib/modules.
5. Reboot your AMIGA one X1000 and enter the firmware. If you have autoboot set up, press CTRL-C. If you have the latest menu-enabled firmware, press the F key to enter the firmware. In any case, you should end up on the firmware's command prompt which looks like this:
CFE>
6. Create a CFE boot entry for your Ubuntu for example:
CFE> setenv -p MENU_3_LABEL "Ubuntu Kernel 4.1" CFE> setenv -p MENU_3_COMMAND 'set pmu -astate=A4 ; setenv bootargs "root=/dev/sdb7 quiet ro splash" ; boot -elf -noints -fatfs cf0:vmlinux-4.1'
7. To activate the new Boot Menu type menu and use the arrow keys to select and highlight 3: Ubuntu Kernel 4.1 before the timer bar runs down.

I take it the libs folder exists in Ubuntu? I also have a "src" directory, can I ignore that?

The src directory is only for the kernel development. For example if you want to compile your own kernel.
You only have to copy the 4.1.0 ... directory to /lib/modules and the kernel to the CF card.

"You only have to copy the 4.1.0 ... directory to /lib/modules.................."
AND, you must be ROOT to do this.

Seems I could use a little help as I can't add/delete anything in libs. I currently have 2 dirs in lib/modules, 3.10.15-X1000_PW-1.3f & 3.2.0-23-powerpc64-smp. I did open the terminal, but ~$ su asks for a pw, which I don't remember setting, but I think ~$ sudo su got me to root with my system pw, lost at that point.
Edit: kernel 4.1 boots with whats in lib/modules & no change. Last edited by sundown on 24-Jun-2015 at 04:52 PM.

You can delete the 3.2.0-23-powerpc64-smp modules as they are not used.
There are a few ways to get the new modules into /lib/modules.
Probably the easiest is to first open your File Manager, click on the Help heading and note the name of the File Manager. Mine is nautilus, but there is also nemo, pcmanfm, and others.
Then open a Terminal, type su, enter your user password (unless you set a Root password during install) or do the sudo thingy. Then type the name of your File manager and do a copy and paste. When finished type exit in the terminal before closing it.
You can also, as root, use the copy command 'cp' . Just type- man cp -to get some help.
All my Linux systems have a program called Gnome-commander on them, which is very much like Dopus4, and that allows you to log in as root and do file management.
The kernel does not need the modules to boot, but there may be things in there that will be necessary after boot, like drivers and stuff that don't load until needed.
P.S. I don't run Ubuntu, because I can't spell it or pronounce it, but Linux is pretty much..... well, Linux. _________________ Tinkering with computers. |

I installed Gnome-commander, set it as root & copied the new files over, very nice program, thanks a lot for your help. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

Thank goodness the kernel 4.1 boots. This kernel don't boot on zzd10h's X1000. I'd like to know why. I tested the kernel 4.1 final successfully on my A1-X1000 last Monday.

Was just going to post that the last time linux quit booting is when I swittched my gfx card from a radeon 4850 to an r9 270. An updated kernel got me going again with the new card.

Yeah.
I'm using a 6850 and there seems to be some sort of firmware for the cards that creates problems if too many cards are built into the kernel. I really have not investigated what is going on but if I remove all the firmware for cards I don't have then things work proper after rebuilding the kernel.
Of the latest kernels (4.1, 4.2) 4.1 would boot super slow and the 3D performance was dead-dog slow. I mean you could watch and count frames during the GL screensaver. Everything worked fine after a strip&rebuild. 4.2 won't boot but I,m just not ambitious enough to tackle that job yet.
Got to be some kind of conflict going on and the wrong micro code is getting loaded, or extra code that is screwing with the card. (???) _________________ Tinkering with computers. |

| @xeno74 I thought I'd do that too, but my attempt to do step 4 met with a message that I don't have permissions to do so. And now I can't even find the new kernel modules directory anymore.
I've been updating 4.1 regularly, but I haven't added 'set pmu -astate=A4' to the command yet. Maybe I'm not really getting the advantages of the upgrade? |
