@Ertilyllibllih

Amiga and PC have always shared some hardware, even in it's heyday. Did you question it then?
Pretty much every zorro based graphics card comes from PC world, only with a comparitively crippled bus. Ditto nic and audio.
The only remotely interesting hardware Amiga ever had was the custom chip set, which for 2 or 3 years was worth having. Beyond that only gamers found it of any use. Give me rtg/RTA any day over such obsolete chipsets.

Where's the feigned outrage/interest about that? ;)

That's exactly the same as the path I took. And you're absolutely right; the Amiga was breath-taking at that time. People who have grown up with modern day computing as it is now would probably not be able to fully appreciate that?

Not sure I understand what 'proper' computing is, but I doubt it's what the market is looking for.

You could well be right. But this is one of those cases where the phrase "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" does not apply to me. I'll carry on with my 'proper' computing! for me, Linux fills that need. But I will always remember the Amiga with fondness.

Sure, people today are mostly using their computers for Facebook and other drivel. And, as BigD says, it's made people LESS productive. Much less. That's not a good thing.

In 80s/90s, all my friends were using Amigas to play games. Only.

Never mind, I hadn't read through the whole thread yet...

Anyway, too bad there isn't a sub-US$500 PPC machine in the works. If my A1 XE dies again, I will not be able to replace it this time like before. These new machines are just too darn expensive, even if you just get the motherboard!

Unfortunately that price is unnatainable in current production quantites and runs big enought to lower the prices are too risky with the software side as it currently is. A-EON are trying to address the applications side of things and Costel (who is now managing Hyperion) said he plans to restructure the OS4 team in order to refocus priorities on optimising and enhancing the OS.

A lot of time in the last few years has been focussed on supporting new boards with different CPU types and sub systems. Those developments will have largely tailed off by now so hopefully we'll start seeing more and better funcionality being added to the OS again.

I hope you're XE lasts a good few years yet.

Since I don't see any statement anywhere from Hyperion about Costel now managing Hyperion, I have to ask what your source is on this. Thanks.

Costel was part of a small contingent of us chatting in the restaurant of the Tulip Inn after the Amiga 30 event. So as the phrase goes, it came straight from the horse's mouth.

@Rob

No need to limit it to word of mouth.

Source

But he's not managing Hyperion. I believe you over stated that part.

I was there during the discussion among the six of us at the Tulip Inn, and I wrote a few notes. Costel said exactly that he was the CTO of Hyperion.
