Amiga development goes so slow that checking in once a year is about right to find out what's happening without the frustration of actually caring. So how is 4.2 going? How about Open Office? Is anyone actually working on anything other than more hardware (without anything you can actually do with it)? The more things are delayed the less relevant they are to the real world. I'm so glad I have my 4 Windows computers so I can do something useful. One of my favorite games right now is Civilization: Beyond Earth. Play that on your Amiga.

@thinkchip

Looking at your signature you checked at least twice in one year, as you bought 4.1FE.

Hyperion podcast with Costel Mincea.

Podcast available here

German only.

Perhaps some of this content was revisited yesterday at Amiga 30 U.K. in Peterborogh. If so, someone might post such info in english. dunno.

@pavlor

Right I bought the update for two Amigas. I'm still waiting for Open Office.

At the Weekend Costel did mention that some test cases have been run in the X-Kernel where a second CPU is doing more than just sitting idle but suggested that a lot more work is required before it can be included in the OS.

The last info on the Libre Office port can be found here.

Whether policy or not, I think it would be appropriate to ask either the website owners who did the podcast and/or Tim de Groote/Costel for permission.

But if there were to be any discussion about the podcast content on AW in english, partially due to the language difference, I think it only fair to be sure those who made the statements are able to clarify if they feel it necessary.

And by that I mean...NOT having to discover after the fact that a transcript has been published in english.

This is just my personal opinion.

1. SMP and Gallium3D are features for 4.2, currently on hold (work on Cyrus drivers first).
2. Gorky17 will be released after so many years (at last). Problems with expired licence prohibits new ports of older WarpOS games. There were similar problems even with Gorky17: marketing material was lost/unavailable, all redone anew by Frank Menzel (if I remember his name right).
3. Hyperion is working also on another software project (not specified; game port I guess ).
4. Printer support is not easy - there aren´t proprietary drivers even for Linux PPC (so CUPS wouldn´t be solution).
5. Workbench enhancement is slow process, replacement is unlikely (for compatibility and user experience reasons).
6. No announcements until really available (no more another netbook fiasco).
7. BugFix/Update for FE will be one big update via AmiUpdate.
8. WinUAE PPC emulation greatly helped 4.1FE Classic sales, but no direct WinUAE support is planned.

German is not my native language, so there could be some errors in my comprehension.

Edit: Added 7.
Edit2: Added 8.

My recent favorites to play with are Amiga OS 4.1 Final Edition, WB Candi, and the new Warp 3D driver for Southern Islands chipset. I picked up a single slot Radeon HD R7 card for my X1000, and it works grea. I will be trying it in my Sam460 soon.

he also says that os4 has more less 30 developers, but wouldnt like to be quoted on exact number. 4.2 is as remote as ever. definitely not this year, doesnt sound like next year, actually it sounds like just put on hold. meanwhile available features of 4.2 have been included with 4.1fe. it was his idea to sell it for discount price and it paid off. the administrative work as manager lets him almost no time to program. actually it sounds like everybody there has real life and job or other projects so hardly any progress can be named. so its all same as ever. new mystery projects mentioned, but nothing gets finished. if you want breaking news about os4 you may skip this podcast altogether.

Thank you for summing up.

@thinkchip

> I'm so glad I have my 4 Windows computers so I can do something useful.

I'm so glad that I have no windows computers, so I do some usefull stuff.

(but I might end up getting a windows computer to run elite dangerous, to do something useless)

> One of my favorite games right now is Civilization: Beyond Earth.

Good that there was a dot between that and the "useful" word in your post.

(beyond those things.... I do have access to some windows HW at home, even if I do not own them, but I do not use them at the moment for anything. Just had my summer "vacation", I did not boot up MorphOS or AmigaOS during that period.
I paid bills and did some documentation and internet stuff on Linux desktop, my son and daughter played some games on win tablet prototypes that I had from work.)

I wouldn't say it's on hold, but certainly there's no date yet and Hyperion at the UK show admitted SMP/4.2 is a long way off.

You say that, but when I have to go back to OS3.x the amount of progress since then is obvious. Sure, progress is slow on big milestones (and we're way behind where we would likely have been at this point under Commodore), but there's clearly a lot of development there and I would say the jump is bigger than from 1.3 to 2.04.

@wawa

If it takes all this time and at the end it's just hacks or workarounds to have some ersatz of not so modern features that exist everywhere else for the sake of retro compatibility then it would have been a waste.

which reminds me one of the first things i did was to buy kickstart switch to be able to "downgrade" my a600 to kick 1.3.

in the end, what defines amiga is the software you can use with it, not the system. system upgrades are nice, as long as they serve the software, otherwise its probably really waste of time and all involved are aware of it at the bottom of their heart. thats why development is so half-hearted. upgrade the system, losing the backwards compatibility and you will lose any reason to utilise it. lets face it. the genuine amiga software is still the biggest ressource justifying amiga usage today. os4 will never catch up with it.

Perhaps you should check in after AmiWest each year. That's when most big announcements are made.

Sadly, I agree. OS4's backward compatibility is very good for well written software, but there isn't much old or new Amiga software that is worth using these days.

If A-eon developed an open console platform with PPC/OS4, which came with classic Amiga games and the ability to run all old Amiga titles from a simple interface as well as new games written for the platform (compatible with all OS4 hardware, but probably running here from bootable DVD a la CD32 - or with some sort of custom AmiStore-based interface), that could actually be pretty good. You'd get sales from the retro community which would establish a hardware base from which to encourage developers to release new games.

Whilst you can use a PC for development, A-eon could push the X5000 as a development machine for the AmigaOne "XG".

It wouldn't be a PS/XBox beater but with the right marketing it could sell in sufficient quantities to be worthwhile, and with an open platform you'll get all sorts of weird things being developed.

Wish I'd thought of that last week - could have pitched it to Trevor!

leaving reasons aside, why anyone would want to run old amiga software, this being up to people who apparently want it, there is even less reason to use generic open source ports on orthodox systems, while they (best case) behave same way as if they would be run on any other mainstream system.

[quote]If A-eon developed an open console platform with PPC/OS4,

why are you so insisting on cpu architecture? in what would that ppc console be different to what they offer now? i doubt there is much room for improvement neither technically nor commercially, which would be within their range of influence. this assuming amiga community is really their primary target audience, which seems increasingly unlikely, no matter what official statements say.

Quote:

you can do that even better on comperatively cheap genuine amiga hardware, or even uae, no need to involve ppc or os4 here where you would have to refrain to inefficient emulation.

... to much assumptions to comment on. just a remark that in such a small and fragmented community this approach might have proven to be as succesful as any other.. namely not at all.

why? an x68 linux box is best for development, ideally you could replace linux wit aros setup to have unified toolchain if all components would be ported. they arent, though.

it would simply have been another failure. try to think of it decoupled from "amiga" name, which ist such a publicity factor as some seem to believe. there is no commercial value to sustain any commercial future, except some would just fip off the trade mark, as they are dong slapping it on generic phones. this is the closest to sane commercial policy we have an opportunity to witness here.

[quote]Wish I'd thought of that last week - could have pitched it to Trevor!/quote]

i think his mind is set. i havent seen a case he could be influenced upon his course, and he doesnt actually need to explain himself to anybody. after a nice chat, you may have spared yourself a long term disappointment.
