Hi All,

Kilaueabart solved the problem. He copied zappa2009's radeon xorg.conf file to /etc/X11 today.

PLEASE test it too. You could also copy zappa2009's radeon xorg.conf file with scp (SSH) via network if you like.

Cheers,

Christian

Julian released a new ubuntu MATE 16.04 installation initial RAM disk today.

New:

Quote:

This one should auto select and install the proper Ubuntu-Mate Desktop down to themes and Ubuntu-Welcome as well as installing the Xorg.conf and 4.1.18 modules.
So no software selection screen is shown during the installation.
The install script functions tested ok on my Sam460ex with the Sam460ex version .

Regards Julian

Download: initrd-4.1.18_ubuntu-mate_16.04-ppc64-1.gz (I suggest to download it with a right click on the link and then with the menu point "Save target as" or something like this.)

@Spectre660: Thanks a lot for the new ubuntu MATE 16.04 installation initial RAM disk. Well done!

PLEASE test it.

Hi All,

I updated ubuntu MATE 16.04 today.

New:

- GCC-6
- libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37
- Firefox 44.0.2
- LibreOffice 5.1.0.3
- Mutiny (new panel layout - topmenu - mate-dock-applet)

After the update I had to copy the r600_dri.so to /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/dri.

Quote:
sudo cp /usr/local/mesa-10.0.4/lib/dri/r600_dri.so /usr/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/dri

Then I logged on again and the 3D acceleration works again.

Screenshots of ubuntu MATE 16.04 with the new panel layout Mutiny:

Cheers,

Christian

I have the same problem, but 16.04 stops booting & I have no idea how to even get it to complete. The requesters that come up are ignored. I do have a working 12.04 disk, but no idea how of if I can copy the xorg file to the 16.04 disk. 12.04 & 16.04 are on separate disks. Sorry, I use linux very little & probable should just stick with 12.04.

@sundown

Try installing it with this ramdisk and the 4.1.18 kernel.

@Spectre660

Ah, should have mentioned that I did use 4.1.8 to install 16.04. Took about 3 hrs, not something I'd care to do again. First goal is to see if it even boots to the desktop before I do anything else.

@sundown

The problem seems to occur when xorg starts with no xorg.conf.
The ramdisk that I linked to is supposed to copy an xorg.conf during the installation.
It also selects and installs the required components for the proper Ubuntu-Mate installation.
Thus designed for users who cant deal with copying the Xorg on a machine that wont boot to a desktop .
I have tested the mechanism with my Sam460ex and Tabor. Both installs went perfectly .
I did leave the Tabor installing overnight. I suppose that the Ubuntu-Mate servers probably don't have the bandwidth as most installs are done for the live DVD's rather than the alternate installer as in the case of the Amiga NG machines

I get a warning that mate is running in low gfx mode & its stuck there no matter what option I pick. My card is an r9 270 & this is my second attempt. I did grab the x.org config file, but never put it anywhere after I read it was part or the ramdisk image. Starting to think its the kernel as I lost 12.04 booting after puting the new card in & my 12.04 disk no longer boots. I could live with 12.04, but the ols ide HD its one is showing errors running smart. Using kernel 4.1.18 at the moment, only option is to re-instal[ my old 4850 card & I don't want to do that.

the r9 use amdgpu video server driver.
it is needed by xorg.
12.04 is a really old distro and probably xorg dont have it (amdgpu support)
last kernels by julian are ready for r7 and r9 gpu.
i suggest you to upgrade the distro with a new one .
Spectre did a great job with the last alternative install.

12.04 may be old, but its the only version that works for me with the r9 270, 4.1.8 just doesn't boot. I'm not a linux user, but I do like to torrent TV shows & 12.04 does that just fine. I've given up on a 16.04 HD install for now, much rather have a 16.04 live dvd, but no idea if one exists.

Ubuntu 12.04.5 PowerPC is very stable and reliable on the AmigaONE X1000 but many programs have not been updated for several months. This is a security problem. The latest Firefox isn't available for Ubuntu 12.04.5 for example. You need at least Ubuntu 15.10 for the latest Firefox.

@All

Martin Wimpress released the Beta 1 of ubuntu MATE 16.04 yesterday.

Link: http://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/

ISOs and initrds for installing ubuntu MATE 16.04 PowerPC:

- PowerPC-based Macs and IBM-PPC (POWER5): ubuntu-mate-16.04-beta1-desktop-powerpc.iso
- A-EON AmigaONE X1000: initrd-4.1.18_ubuntu-mate_16.04-ppc64-1.gz (You need additionally the stable longterm kernel 4.1.18: vmlinux-4.1.18-AmigaONE_X1000.tar.gz)
- A-EON AmigaONE X5000: uRamdisk_Ubuntu-Mate_16.04_cyrus_net-1 (You need additionally the kernel 4.4.1. Downloads for beta testers only)
- A-EON AmigaONE A1222: uRamdisk_Ubuntu-Mate_16.04_tabor_net-1 (You need additionally the kernel 4.1.18. Downloads for beta testers only)

- ACube AmigaONE 500/Sam460ex( Lite): Sam460ex_Ubuntu-Mate_16.04_Netinstall-1.iso

I successfully updated my ubuntu MATE 16.04 PowerPC to the Beta 1 on my AmigaONE X1000 today.

@Kilaueabart: It seems, that the problem with the "clock applet" has been solved.

PLEASE test it.

Many thanks in advance,

Christian

Many thanks, but the 16.04 install still stops with the low gfx error loop, it
does boot my 12.04 install. The 16.04 drive did show on the 12.04 desktop & I
can open it, I see a etc/x11/xorg.conf.failsafe file. I tried to drag xorg.conf,
over but that just gave me an error. It's not called out as sdc1, so maybe not
real?

Both 12.04 & 16.04 are on their own HDs, is it possable to copy xorg.conf from a
usb stick from 12.04 to the static 16.04 HD?

You could do it with "sudo cp xorg.conf /media/-- your name --/--drive-name or id--/etc/X11" via the terminal.
