tu run 68k software, today, there is only one solution and it is not hardware

Perchance, what would that be?
As all software requires hardware to run.

WinUAE.
It is the only way to run at best new 68k RTG Vampire Compliant software
So, new 68k softwares run only on Vampire e WinUAE. I don't know if it could be a good choice..

[16:49] it will give better AMMX which will allow some of the new games to run
[16:49] some of the latest games already use AMMX2

Raw power of NG is much greater than that of Vampire. Not only CPU speed, but also 2D (compositing) and 3D GFX (even with slooow Warp3D). You may play Quake 3 class game in HD resolution even on A1-500, but this would be next to impossible for Vampire. The difference is so great even emulated 68k applications run faster on NG than on Vampire.

And this increased performance on a dead CPU architecture with an OS that isn't being actively developed buys you what exactly?

The problem is the OS.

Those Arria10 Socs have nice ARM processors built into them, btw.

A hybrid approach does appear to offer considerable promise.

I would say we are at the "undead" stage for the 68K architecture. If the Apollo core team keeps it up and gets to the ASIC stage (x years from now?) we can definitely put 68k back into the "living" category.

As for the OS, well AROS was very recently shown booting on the Vampire.

Small steps...

Very nice but does that mean I say goodbye to my 8gb sd card I worked so hard to configure?
Not swappable I assume.

Big announcement by Gunnar on the Apollo Core Knowledge Forum

Quote:

There is some movement of AROS, the open source AMIGA OS.

Three things are needed to build AMIGAs.
A) A good 68K CPU
B) The real AMIGA chipset, ideally enhanced
C) AMIGA OS

AROS can offer the OS.

To Support this Open Movement, we hereby announce that we will open source SAGA (the enhanced AMIGA chipset).

@ErikBauer

A brave move but imho the right one. None of this matters if the machines don't get built. Open sourcing is the quickest way to insure against things going wrong and everyone's work being lost.

@billt

Gunnar:

Some updates,

today we played with 16bit stereo playback feature of PAMELA.

The "chanel" is able to output stereo-16bit streams.
Which means it does process 2x16bit.
It also can fetch data 64bit wise from memory.

So if you want you can look at it as 32bit audio feature as it processes 2x16 bit per clock with 64bit data path.

@OlafS25

16 bit stereo?
Congratulations, that is something legacy can really use.

BTW - On sound support under MorphOS, work is being done to resurrect the drivers for the Envy24HT sounds chip and rumor has it that CMI 8738 based boards will be supported in the future (both useful for the SAM460 and X5000).

ALSO - "Dead", "Alive"? Who cares?

Long live the Amiga, be it dead or alive (or living dead, or...whatever).

PPCs will soldier on, as will 68K, and we advance into X64 and ARM.
And if anyone dares to nay say any of it, fluck 'em.

@iggy

the code should look about the same, should be no issue, to just recompile it.

as for ahi i think it need support for float that what they use in newer audio formats.

aros68k and amiga 3.x are binary and source compatible. lets assume someone writes an ahi driver. when compiled for amiga it will work with aros68k. included in aros source tree it will compile and work for aros inclusive further platforms, which in this case isnt necessary, since the hardware is 68k exclusive.
