E-Mail programs do not want to work on my Amiga!

Hello Amigans!

I was wondering if any of you could help with an issue that is starting to test my patience.

I managed to get my A1200 online last week and have been getting on fine with browsing and IRC, but my machine does not seem to want to work with either YAM or Simplemail.

I have tried installing both several times, latest version, all MUI libs installed and they both crash.

YAM 2.9p1 downloaded from Aminet, unarchived to a directory where there seems to be the program file and an install program.
I ran installer, installed successfully to my system partition
Go to launch, and I get non-stop RECOVERABLE ALERT message

CODE 0100 000F
TASK 03D 3860

Will not go any further, then when I reset I get SOFTWARE FAILURE

CODE: 8100 000F
TASK: 083D 3860

So instead of running from the installed directory, I try running direct from the unarchived directory. I get a bit further this time, though it is slow, the logo screen comes up and it says "loading graphics" it then gets to a window titled "Configuration" but it is blank grey and the whole system hangs.

--

SimpleMail, latest version from Aminet offered me no further joy
It gets as far as loading the "Simplemail" logo then my system resets with a SOFTWARE FAILURE

CODE: 8000 0025
TASK: 0800 223C

--

My setup is A1200 running OS 3.1 / MUI 3.8 from CF card, ACA 1221 @ 28MHz with 65Mb fast RAM, Indivision AGA Mk II running at 1024x768 HighGFX.

If anyone can get *either* of these programs working I will be satisfied, I just need access to E-mail on my Amiga!

Kind regards,
Spud.

@NutsAboutAmiga

This shouldn´t be MUI problem, 3.8 is still recommended for "classic" Amiga configurations.

@spudisgood

Do any other MUI applications work?

Try SnoopDos (and probably output to file) to see, if some libs/classes are missing.

I have both YAM and SimpleMail, but I didn´t use these in years (IE+web service for most internet related needs).

@pavlor

Snoopdos does not seem to show anything strange,
iBrowse and Wookiechat both run fine, as does the MUI program itself.

Kind regards,
Spud.

@spudisgood

Get a debug version from here: yam.ch

DO NOT get the nightly build and remember that by OS3 they probably mean OS3.5+ as only yam 2.2 and 2.3 were released before OS3.5 (2.3p1 being the patched version to work with 3.5)

If a debug version of 2.9 doesn't help try 2.3 but remember to install it somewhere different and the drawer layout and naming methods have changed over the years.

@Severin

I am certain they mean OS3+ and not OS3.5+ and YAM works with 3.0.

@itix

I have YAM 2.4 running now and AmiSSL installed but I can't get YAM to find AmiSSL

So I am a step further the program is running but I cannot access any of my email accounts due to lack of SSL

Des anyone know how to do this or what I need to put into the startup sequence for AmiSSL to be initialised on bootup?

Kind regards,
Spud.

I know Severin said not to use the nightly builds, but they are the answer for me with accounts that needs SSL.

The problem with the nightly builds is that they time out and have to be regularly updated and you have the problem of new bugs cropping up and causing problems. for someone just trying to get an email client up and running OS3.1 an older version is the better option. upgrading and tweaking can be done later on a copy of a known working version.

I don't use SSL for emails at all and never have, if I ever needed to send a secure email I'd add whatever it was as a pgp attachment.

I gave up in the end as apparently AmiSSL 3.6 uses a newer version of SSL not compatible with the older YAM version I am using dated 2003,

Instead I have managed to get Gmail to load on iBrowse.

Thanks for the help anyway and I will keep checking updates of YAM and Simplemail in the hope one of them may work someday

Kind regards,
Spud.

So you are comfortable about sending user name and password unencrypted?

It isn't always a case of choosing to use SSL with email.
Some providers insist on it and wont allow you to access your email without it.

Cheers

@spudisgood

Just to get a bit technical here this is what the alert means:
AN_BadFreeAddr 0x0100000FUL /* Memory header not located. [ Usually an
invalid address passed to FreeMem() ] */

So something YAM or SM is doing is trying to free a corrupt memory address. I must admit I haven't tried to use these programs on your type of setup. Do the authors of these clients test on 68K or just compile to I wonder?

Have you tested on a "normal" screen mode? Like PAL or DblPAL?

Also, you've done well to get iBrowse to work with GMail. Unfortunately modern browsers don't work that well on 68K. Well I can never get them to load or tell me what is wrong.

@Hypex

G-Mail is working with 128-bit encryption I forgot to add, so this will be AmiSSL working with iBrowse.

I must admit I got excited and tried Facebook, alas, still no joy though I have heard that AmiSSL 3.7 is in the works and could well change this, though to what degree of success I do not know (again, relying on hear-say that Facebook can snap up 500Mb of RAM at the click of a finger if it wishes due to bloated coding - not such a problem if you are on an X5000, but BIG problem if you are trundling along on an A1200)

Unfortunately the older version of YAM I tried could not find it, probably for the reason that SSL has changed since 2001, so unless you can get Simplemail or newer versions of YAM to work you are screwed for accessing mail unless you want to go down the webmail route.

Kind regards,
Spud.

"AmiSSL 3.6 uses a newer version of SSL not compatible with the older YAM version"
Now this is ironic - I use the latest YAM Version and I cannot connect to my T-Online.de account any longer, as YAM uses the outdated AmiSSL v3.6...

Also see this thread at amigaworld:

"I assume the latest AmiSSL v3.6 is based on OpenSSL v0.9.7g of 2005. This is the version that does not work with YAM 2.9p1, e.g. accessing securepop and securesmtp servers always results in error messages.

So what we would urgently need for our classic AmigaOS 3.x systems is something based on at least TLS 1.2 / OpenSSL v1.0.2d .
"

EDIT:
Interesting in this regard is Norbert Kett's Google Drive Handler for AmigaOS 3.x, as this handler is based on
OpenSSL v0.9.8zh (Dec 3rd, 2015) and contains all security patches until December 3rd, 2015, but only supports TLS 1.0.

OpenSSL v1.0.2e (Dec 3rd, 2015) is the latest, full featured SSL library that has been ported to the Amiga, but requires a fast 68k machine (68040+) and is also included in this distribution . Seems to support TLS 1.1. and 1.2, according to table 2 from the top at Wikipedia.

The latest stable version of OpenSSL is OpenSSL 1.0.2f, released on Jan 28th, 2016.
