Sounds nice...

And actually works "nicer" than PiE

Too bad Broadblues is involved in AmigaOS only and doesen't want to commit any software in MorphOS camp too...

Hi All,

Here is a list of software I dream about for the Amiga.
...
What software do you dream about?

In the face of the unsatisfactory situation regarding printing on the Amiga platform (classic & NG), I'm e.g. dreaming of an update for TurboPrint with support for at least some of the latest printer models.

TurboPrint for Linux is still being actively developed and currently at version 2.40-1. It's printer driver page was last amended on May 26th, 2016, and provides lots of drivers for Brother, Canon, Epson and HP printers.

Guven the great amount of Linux (or Unix) software titles that have been ported to the Amiga in the course of the recent years I really ask myself why noone so far has tried to get the latest "TurboPrint for Linux" printer drivers ported to the Amiga TurboPrint version?

And even if the Linux printer drivers should not be usable for the Amiga version of TurboPrint - why has noone tried to obtain a permission from IrseeSoft to port the latest Linux version incl. drivers to Amiga OS (classic & NG)?

Because both in AmigaOS camp, and in MorphOS camp, if you ask for a TurboPrint Linux release (but more precisely Free CUPS Drivers rather than TurboPrint that is a commercial software), developers slap you in the face, responding "Printing on Postscript driver is enough for any Amigan needs!"

Well, all I tried was to ask whether it could somehow be possible to use the "TurboPrint for Linux" printer drivers for the Amiga version of TurboPrint. Maybe it is a naive idea, but I tought it might be possible that the drivers could be used in both versions.

I just wanted to know if someone with Amiga programming experience already had the same idea and checked if this is possible.

As you mentioned CUPS:
I seem to have a weak remembrance that at some point in history (possibly before the first OS 4 release) someone from the OS4 developers/Hyperion (Rogue?) announced that "CUPS" was meant to become the new printing system of the Amiga NG OS and to replace the 'quasi-standard' TurboPrint.

Does my memory serve me right?
And if so, what has become of it?

@Dandy

Helgis was also asking about CUPS. Just not here. I don't recall any announcement from OS4 officals of CUPS being planned or worked on. And if so it certainly wouldn't be to replace the 'quasi-standard' TurboPrint. Since OS4 has no native TurboPrint. And only 68K drivers people would install.

As to CUPS, it might have been talked about, but so far nothing has happened from any developer AFAIK.

@Dandy

If TurboPrint drivers are not cross compatible, maybe you could contact Wolf Faust for Studio Professional Printer drivers and updates? As I remember, it was Turboprint's competitor.

@ChrisH

True that, I gotta agree

@Kicko

Why choose, why not use both?

I use AOS4 for what I can and what's possible (mostly coding for me personally), Android when I'm not at my computers, Windows for rest of the "heavy stuff", and WinUAE for classic stuff... No problems there.

Has FinalWriter been open sourced? Is so when did this happen? Don't know how I missed it. I know Wordworth was a closed book. Good one.

Very cool! Any thoughts on when this work will be available to the public?

Cheers,

Sure you can use both amigaos and other systems. I used 2 generations of laptops with windows on them while using a1g4xe and later x1000.

Your reply doesn't really answer Hypex's implied question, which was HOW are you modifying Final Writer?

Do you mean that you bought the source code from the developer?

Yes ofcousre he did, you not going to spend money on binaries and disassemble are you?

He hasn't exactly kept it a secret, posting a number of news articles and threads with progress screen shots....

Yes I bought the source ... It's been public knowledge since 2014-2015.... However the the work has not been done by me... It has been done by kalamatee.... he wrote a little blog post about it.
