If you are following the instructions above you should end up with the Ubuntu-Mate Desktop. The USB drive just loads the kernel ,dtb and ramdisk. You need to load Linux from the DVD Did you burn the DVD image linked to and insert it in your Sam460's DVD drive ?

I burn DVD with the image file "ubuntu-mate-16.04.1-desktop-powerpc.iso" i have used AmiDVD with option U-Boot Selected
I Use RawDisk from Sam_4.4.19-2-Ubuntu_16.04.1_Live.img TO USB0: I unpack archive Live-Dvd-Boot.tar and copy the content in my USB key With "Media toolBox" I injected ub2lb in => USB key
I reboot my sam with first boot USB key and i insted the DVD ubuntu After small time i have black screen with text white...
And after i have : Login: Password:

This should not happen. You should end up with the Ubuntu-Mate desktop with no login request.
Can you post your U-Boot variables here from Amigaos 4.1 with the nvgetvar command.
Also what is your Sam460 configuration ? Mine is as follows : Sam460ex 2GB ram Sii3512 pci stata controller (1) 500GB Hard drive + (1) DVD Drive pciex1 Envy24HT sound card Radeon HD7750

The problem is that my Kernels and ramdisks are too big for the current version of the Sam ub2lb boot loader required for boot from DVD. |
I see. How big are they? I know the ramdisk can be compressed but can you compress the kernel? Being they can be loaded seperately.
And does SLB have the same problem?
Quote:
If ub2lb were recompiled to allow larger kernels sizes and larger ramdisk sizes then no problem. |
In the source I see it mallocs 18MB in one place and 14MB in another for a kernel. And 1MB for a dtb.
I don't know if it was compiled on Linux but I managed to get it to compile on OS4. Had to modify the Makefile and maybe some include files.
Quote:
Later on if you install to harddrive ub2lb does not support ext4 partitions and can cause problems booting AmigaOS when an ext4 partition exists on the hard drive. |
Well that should not be a problem as long as the kernels are kept on an Ext2/3 boot partition and Ext4 kept for the root filesystem.
How does Ext4 affect OS4? I have Ext4 volumes on my drives for Linux. I have an Ext3 volume with a1boot.conf marked as bootable, my Ext4 volumes marked as non-bootable. On my A1.
Quote:
The fastest and best solution is to boot the Linux kernels and ramdisks from a TFTP server so no need for the USB stuff . |
Well that would also require setting up a server on another machine. Rather than just plugging in a drive and booting that locally. Makes USB seem easier.
Perhaps making up an archive with boot files and a UBoot batch script could work. If Linux could understand a FAT USB stick and detect it as an install disk all the better. Or even copying an ISO there and have it detect the ISO which I read it can do on HDD.Last edited by Hypex on 19-Sep-2016 at 03:57 PM.

Kernel size that work with u2lb are up to 5.2mb compressed. Mine are now in the 6.9 mb + range. the uncompressed vmlinux file is at about 16.7mb Tried to compile a stripped one one yesterday with only SI video card support ended up at about 5.6MB compressed. Ramdisk can probably be trimmed to the required size. Lazy version without stripping out the mac kernel modules results in compressed uboot uRamdisk size of 37.4 Mb where 18Mb is the current supported size of u2lb
there is also 5mb malloc in
void *kernel = malloc(5 * 1024 * 1024);
u2lb boot loader problem. The ext4 partition caused u2lb from reaching to the point were the boot partitions show. so very much prevents anything from loading from that device including OS 4.

Booted ok for me with the following set to duplicate your U-boot settings
serdes=sata2 ddr2_boost=3
Only thing that i can suggest is to download and burn the iso again on another computer . Would be nice to hear from Fingus whether he was able to boot ok .

Yeah 5.2MB is rather small. Geri manages to compile an uncompressed A1 kernel to about 8MB. 3.10 anyway. Ramdisk compressed about 5MB and they are combined into one image for booting.
Perhaps a reason to shift back to slb_v2.
UBoot would likely only support Ext2/3 unless it was updated on the Sam so I wonder if this causes it to fail.
Edit: Forgot to mention, if it is based on the old A1 Ext2 routines it will also need to be 128 inode formatted volume or it will fail as well. Don't know if they updated that. Last edited by Hypex on 22-Sep-2016 at 06:35 AM.

USB thumbdrive image. Download and write to usb drive. Rawdisk under AmigaOS4.1 works to write the image but you first have to set the usb drive up as an AmigaOS USB drive with Media Toolbox then write the image file with Rawdisk . |
Interesting. I tried but could not boot. I installed the USB with MTB. I wrote ub2lb on the RDB and I created a DOS01 partition. Then I wrote the image with Rawdisk. The image overwrote the partition. I also checked it was correctly written.
When I boot ub2lb says it can't find a menu.lst file. So what do you have in this img file? An ext3 partition?_________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Img file is of an msdos partition table drive so no AmigaOS boot loaders exist .
Partition 1 = fat32 Name (SAM460) . AmigaOS scripts in Documents directory. Partition 2 = ext4 . empty. Just present to make the last partition number 3 . Partition 3 = ext3 Name Sam460 Boot . Kernel, dtb and ramdisk stored on this one.
Procedure from AmigaOS 4.1
(1) Install the USB thumb drive with Media Toolbox so that Rawdisk can write from the begin of the drive. Do not install any boot loader on the RDB. Reboot after saving changes to USB thumb drive
(2) Use Rawdisk from the AmigaOS cli to copy the .img to the USB thumb drive.
Uboot loads the kernel, dtb and ramdisk partition 3, the ext3 partition .

oh ok, using ub2lb was so obvious (from a user point of view) that I overlooked you used ext2load Uboot command. Ah yes that makes sense as you said your kernel are too big. Ok, I'm getting old
I'll have to give it another try. _________________ Philippe 'Elwood' Ferrucci Sam460 1.10 Ghz AmigaOS 4 betatester Amiga Translator Organisation |

Oh, this writes the whole disk, overwriting the RDB/MBR blocks. Didn't know that.
I reached the Uboot variable limit so I had to type a few commands by hand. I could boot the files from the USB image. The display switches to the high resolution console and then it crashes. Probably because it can't find the rest of installation files. I mean, the third partition of the img file doesn't contain standard Ubuntu installation files. What do I need to do next?inserting a Ubuntu DVD?
