| I wanted to try out Linux on my Sam460ex with RadeonHD 6570 Ultimate and Julia-PCI-E-Soundcart.
Is there a Linux live CD/DVD that runs out of the box without the Need to tinkering around in the cli? _________________ I´m back in 2023 on Classic Amiga with my A1200/Blizzard1230IB@50Mhz, 32MB RAM, AmigaOS3.2 and ROMs, Indivision AGA MK3, Author of Amiga-Flipclock (OS4) |

You can boot the normal Ubuntu-Mate-Live 16.04.1 DVD by booting the Sam460ex kernel, dtb and ramdisk from a usb thumb drive.
USB thumbdrive image. Download and write to usb drive. Rawdisk under AmigaOS4.1 works to write the image but you first have to set the usb drive up as an AmigaOS USB drive with Media Toolbox then write the image file with Rawdisk . https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5429075/Linux/Sam_4.4.19-2-Ubuntu_16.04.1_Live.img
Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 Live powerpc iso http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/16.04/release/ubuntu-mate-16.04.1-desktop-powerpc.iso
There is a script in the documents directory of the first partition of the USB drive that you have to execute from AmigaOS 4.1 to set the Uboot-variables for booting from USB . See below . The script is named Sam460_Uboot_USB_Linux_Live_CD.txt At the Sam460 uboot prompt use the command run live
Important Note : Dont try to install Linux to Hard drive with the regular Ubuntu installer. it will delete your first hard dive partition if you get that far. There is a special script on the USB drive that works. ============================================================================ ;Sam460ex Uboot settings for Linux booting via uboot shell

I stuck with Rawdisk, the "Start"-Button stay greyed out.

You have to set the number of blocks to write. Yes it's strange. The tool should write the whole file without asking the user. :-/ I guess you can enter the value under "Most blocks" in the "Number of blocks" field and press start. It's overkill to give a value beyond your filesize but it should work. It will most probably stop when the end of file is reached.
Alternatively (not tested) you probably can enter: filesize/device-blocksize + 1 The device blocksize is displayed when you click the Icons/Information menu item of the Workbench when your device (USB key?) is selected. Last edited by elwood on 13-Sep-2016 at 07:58 PM.

CLI on AmigaOS 4.1 ,not Linux, to write the image to the USB drive. It can also be written using a windows program .USBImage tool. http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/ Kernel, dtb and ramdisk could also be booted from a TFTP server in which case no USB drive is needed .
What machine do you need the live linux CD for ?

No. Would need an properly configured A1XE linux kernel and ramdisk . These would have to be booted via TFTP or a special DVD would probably need to be done incorporation the kernel and ramdisk.

Stick preparation with the image-file worked.
What to do with the ISO-File (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/16.04/release/ubuntu-mate-16.04.1-desktop-powerpc.iso)?
Copy whole file on one of the partitions or extract the iso to it?

Burn the the iso to a dvd . Use the execute command in AmigaO 4.1 to run the Sam460_Uboot_Linux.txt script in the Documents directory of the USB Drive . Boot your Sam460 with the iso in the DVD drive. Enter the Uboot Shell by pressing the escape key while booting . type run live press enter and wait until the desktop comes up. your should see a spash screen while linux is loading . If you end up with a blank screen after the loading of the kernel and ramdisk then restart the process from booting the Sam with the DVD in the drive.

Given the title of the thread I'd say a Sam460ex.
This should be easily possible. There were full bootable Debian images on ACube's site. Just need to modify a live image CD the same way.

Well that's manually booting it. So not sticking in a CD and letting it rip.
I know modifying a full live CD would be a pain to do. But it has been done to a Debian CD before.
It should be easy enough to make a full USB boot image. After you format it with a working filesystem and install a booter on the OS4 side. Which would be challenging. Set up a boot menu. And copy Linux files to it. Image USB drive. Bootable USB stick. |

The problem is that my Kernels and ramdisks are too big for the current version of the Sam ub2lb boot loader required for boot from DVD. A lot of functions and most of the supported video cards would have to be stripped out to get the kernel back down to the supported size. If ub2lb were recompiled to allow larger kernels sizes and larger ramdisk sizes then no problem. (I think that this needs the DENX cross compiler setup which I have not been able to get set up. It won't compile native for me) Later on if you install to harddrive ub2lb does not support ext4 partitions and can cause problems booting AmigaOS when an ext4 partition exists on the hard drive.
The fastest and best solution is to boot the Linux kernels and ramdisks from a TFTP server so no need for the USB stuff .
