The original nylon spacers were too short, with the result that the CPU module sat crooked and sometimes did not make proper contact with the mobo connector. IIRC the spacers were 5.5 mm but should have been 6.0 mm.
It was actually the other way around - well, on my board at least! The stand-off spacers originally fitted by Eyetech on my board were too long (6mm or 6.5mm), and caused the two boards (CPU module and motherboard) to be way off parallel to each other, which, as you say, is not ideal for a good connection of the meg-array. I sized the spacers down to 5.2mm. The two boards are now absolutely parallel.
